View Full Version : Disk Utility Does Not Recognize HDD

Hey Guys, here are my specs.
WD 160 GB SATA HDD
2GB DDR400 RAM
Gigabyte GA-K8U MotherBoard (SATA ULI M1689 Chipset)
AMD 64 3700+ Clawhammer (sse, sse2 only) --Using sse2 injected .iso
ATI X1950GT AGP

I have Three partitions, two with my windows stuff and the Third (10GB) for my OSX Part.
I did the diskpart and created the partition as instructed.
However, I don't believe my problem is the partitions themselves because I cannot see anything in Disk Utility.
My Motherboard has always required me to insert a floppy with the appropriate SATA drivers before I can install any version of windows.
So I believe that's the problem I'm having here, OSX cannot recognize my HDD because the correct drivers aren't loaded at startup.
Can anyone guide me in the right direction here?

Thanks!

-Kevin

mess around with the jumper settings :), lol wait.. you did manage to install osx right or you can't because the sata hd are not detected in the disk utility (in the dvd)?

I don't think you'll be able to run Leopard on this machine, so that it'll be fun. SSE2 only is not the problem, but mainly the ULi chipset and that it's an AGP board. I am interested myself if Leopard supports AGP 'cause I have myself a SSE2/AGP machine (using it actually).

Nevertheless: I would recommend a single HD for using MacOS X cause it uses a different file systems and there could be some problems using a combined HD. Dual booting is also easier to realize with two harddisks. Use an IDE HD, it's the safest way. But again, I'm not sure if ULi is supported.

To the Windows installation: it asks every time at the installation for a possible needed driver disk. Normally it is only neccessary if you have an 3rd-party controller which is not integrated in the chipset, like an PCI SCSI controller or onboard RAID controllers. I have on my boards a SiliconImage SiI3114 Raid controller. If I wouldn't give Windows the driver disk at the beginning I would not be able to boot from this controller. But I can boot from the standard IDE and SATA controllers which are part of the nForce chipset. If you really needed a driver disk to detect the SATA HD you can skip installing OS X on that drive. Have you ever tried to install Windows without a driver disk?

I always needed a driver disk to install windows on this particular setup.
You're probably right, I wont be able to run it.
I'm just going to sell my machine and buy a macbook air lol
Thanks guys

Yeah the problem DoiX, is that I can't see my HDD in the Disk Utility on the DVD.
It does show my IDE CD-DVD Combo Drive, It wont show my SATA DVD Burner Drive Either..

Zephyroth, could you please add support for my Mobo/Sata Combo?
Thanks man.

If there 's support for your chipset of course. If not ...

I am downloading BootCamp.dmg can I dual boot windows from my PC Mac install as a real Mac does?

Don't think so 'cause you have no real mac ;) Are you using two seperate harddisks? Then you could use the Windows boot selector, its easy.

BootCamp on Hackintosh is useless ... Because you can install Windows on a PC natively ...

I also have this problem, It does not recognize it no matter what i try to do, format to NTFS, FAT32, HFS+ nothing.

My chipset:

@Raidz1
That chipset isn't supported.

There IS a .kext for the SB600 ( called "SB600_SATA_ATA" ) - I've used it to get my Compaq V2000 Series laptop running (in a limited way...) with Zephyroth. It also got my 690G / SB600 motherboard recognizing the internal SATA drives...

I use the "external hard drive method" ( rather than trying to build a new .iso with the SB600_SATA_ATA .kext(s) added to the installation DVD (that's WAY over my head!))

Otherwise there's little chance you'll get 10.5.1 installed by just using the standard install DVD and the "usual" install method...

You serious? Why is that? Are only the Nvidia ones supported or what?

You really don't know the answer to that? Macs are built on a very limited set of hardware. PC's AREN'T.

Firstly it's amazing that these people have OS X working on AMD systems AT ALL - there are NO true Macs that use AMD CPU's or chipsets that support AMD CPU's!

Secondly, Zephyroth built his version 1 AMD 10.5.1 to support the hardware he's using ( read: NOT every other AMD chipset known to man ). It happens to work for quite a few others - BUT it DOESN'T work in all cases! I've tried installing Zephyroth on 8 different AMD computers. It has worked successfully on three (3) of them.

There is some hardware that will never be supported. Fortunately for you, the SB600 actually is,,, with the right "drivers" ( the SB600_SATA_ATA .kext )... It'll just take more effort on your part - OR - you'll have to wait for Zephyroth's version 2!

I understand, One last thing, i've tried searching for the SB600 kext file and nothing has came up, Google, or Insanleymac.

It's at InsanelyMac. I found it again:

I think there are a couple of .kexts in this .zip file. I used "Kext Helper" to install them.

Hey guys,

I have the same problem. My HDD don't show up in the Disk Utility app.

Chipset:
MB: ASUS K8VSE-Deluxe (AGP 3.0 Graphic Interface)
Northbridge: VIA K8T800 (VT8383) rev.01
Southbridge: VIA VT8237
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3400+ (SSE2)

I'm using Zeph 10.5.1 with SSE2 kernel patch. I suppose my chipsets are not supported?
I tried with a SATA HDD and a IDE, both are not showing. I use diskpart like this:
- list disk
- select disk [disk #]
- list partition
- create partition primary id=af
- active

Then reboot and load on the install DVD... Any info guys?
Thanks

thanks DoiX, really appreciated. I'll give it a try. I just wanted to avoid downloading again (I reached my maximum for this month) so I wanted to know if it was possible to patch my 10.5.1 dvd to make VIA chipsets to work...

If my motherboard (and the chipset) are not listed on the wiki, does it mean it will never work or just that it hasn't been tested yet?
