I can install snow leopard 10.6.0 or 10.6.2 or 10.6.3 (all retail) using ModUSB on my system and even get it running updated to 10.6.7/10.6.8 following a nice guide I found. But I don't even know where to start with Lion, and I NEED to get to Lion because it now supports my 6950 card.

I listed my specs earlier but here they are again:

Mobo: Asus Crosshair V Formula (AMD 990)
CPU: AMD Phenom II X6 1090T
GFX: AMD Radeon HD 6950 (w/unlocked shaders but can be bios switched to stock)
Mem: 16gb G.Skill 4x4 1600 9-9-9-24
Sound: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium
PSU: Raidmax 850w continuous (though I guess this isn't that relative :P)
Other: 4 HDDs and 1 SSD (SSD is windows install, 3 HDDs are extra storage, 1 HDD is MAC, all are GPT and will show up properly) I also have a 75-1 usb card reader but I usually unplug it when installing Mac. And a simple Asus CD drive that seems to function properly.

Anyways yeah.. I'm pretty lost but I REALLY want to get a "Mac Pro" system running!
You need to have SL installed on one drive or partition, and then install Lion on a seperate one so you can replace the kernel and any kexts manually, since there aren't any distros that are bootable on AMD hardware yet.

• AMD Phenom II X6 1075T
• ASUS M4A78LT-M
• 12GB DDR3
• XFX Radeon HD 5750 1GB
• 160GB HDD | OSX 10.6.7
• 500GB HDD | OSX 10.7.2

Ok that's a start. But how do I actually install to another partition? Do I want to boot into Snow Leopard and run an installer? Also what files am I supposed to replace and where to get said replacements? I have a Lion retail image btw.

All I can tell you is what I did. I have 10.6.7 installed on a 160GB HDD. I downloaded iAtkos L2 and put that on a thumb drive. I formatted a second 500GB HDD. Then you Show All Files and browse to /System/Installations/Packages on the thumb drive (I assume it'll be the same on your retail copy) and open the OSInstall.mpkg and choose your second drive or partition to install. After it's done, you need to replace mach_kernel at the root of the new drive with the new one for AMDs, and you also need to use the DP2 32bit Finder.app I posted a few pages back because the kernel can't handle 64bit yet. You replace the one in your /System/Library/Coreservices folder on the new install. Then reboot and continue to set up your graphics and whatnot.

Don't know how this will apply to your situation but hopefully this helps.

I'm using original first mach_kernel 10.7.3 bronzovka
So I really have no idea what did it. I'm on my fourth reboot now and everything is still working fine. I know I got rid of HDAEnabler, AppleHDA & the ALC8xx kexts in S/L/E, and I installed the custom IOUSBFamily.kext I've been using in SL that enables sleep on my board, and somehow something did the trick. All working, got AppStore working, sleep and the whole nine. Just waiting for 64bit for FCPX and iCloud

***QUESTION*** How would I go about updating to 10.7.3 from here? Both times I've tried to update, I end up bombing the whole system. It won't even load the boot volume after. I've tried through Software Update and I've tried through Combo Update. I would like to get Messages working now, any suggestions? And has anyone found anything out about iCloud?

Guys...I was installing next using next utility and...
Repair Permissions for "/System/Library/Extensions/VoodooTSCSyncAMD.kext" ... Done.
-- Total processed: 8 files (1 kexts) for 0 sec.

Updating system caches MAC OS X "Lion"...........
will that update of caches repair the xpchelper one?

And...when i try to update from 10.7.2 throught software update... It shows that my system is up to date...is there a fix?

I have similar issue, installed 10.7.2 and booted fine, seems to work. Wanted to get imessage, so updated to 10.7.3 using comboupdate, change kernel, then won't boot.
tried with bunch of kernel flags then somehow booted with -x -v ncpi=0x3000 arch=i386, then rebooted with -v npci=0x3000 arch=i386, then boots. now some USB not working because I used Tonyman multibeast for lion after updating to 10.7.3 and used USB rollback. Would you mind telling me which custom IOUSBfamily you used? I would like to try that.

I am try something to see if I can get iCloud to work.....will post later if succeed.

Moved to INTEL
i5-2500K / GA-Z77-DS3H / HD5770
OS X 10.7.4 all working!
Win 7 ultimate running on Parallel

Well then you're in better shape than I am at this point LOL I have yet to even be able to boot after updating. I'm uploading the IOUSBFamily.kext that I'm using now, keep in mind that what works for me might not work for you so use it at your own risk lol

***EDIT*** Here ya go: http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?5n8bb1moaj0b4bn

I think before I try to update again I'm gonna make a Carbon Copy Cloner full bootable backup in case I screw something up. That way I can pick up where I left off instead of trying to find the right combination of kexts and bootflags all over again lol

I've installed kexts and rebuilt caches several times since the xpchelper fix and it has not restored permissions yet. But, worst case scenario you just have to repeat the terminal commands and all will be well again.

Don't know about the Software Update problem...

iCloud/iMessage will not work on AMD systems, due to the kernel being self-compiled. The only way to get it working is using the vanilla mach_kernel, and you can't do that unless you're running an Intel system. Appstore will work flawlessly though.

Even if you have en0 </true>, ethernet device-prop, ethernetbuiltin. I think it's an underlying issue with the UUID not being passed to iCloud and iMessage that's not actually giving your device the authentication it needs to connect to the server. But I've not investigated the issue, but I've read countless posts online. Once I switched to Intel build, it worked automatically.

Here's a topic about the issue: http://revogirl.wordpress.com/2012/0...n-in-problems/

Thanks for the info. I'm sure someone will figure out a workaround soon enough
