Is it possible to run Mac OS on my system?

I've looked all over the forum and internet but can't find an answer.

I've a spare hard drive (so there's no chance of messing up my Win7 installation).

My specs are:

AMD Phenom II 965 BE
ASUS Crosshair Formula III
Mushkin Blackline DDR3 (4x2Gb)
SATA Hard drive
NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT

Last night I tried to follow a guide to install Snow Leopard via a USB. I used a friends Mac, but the DVD couldn't be read - I don't know if it's a bad DVD. I was able to 'restore' my USB as a journaled drive, but couldn't read the DVD. It would be spat back out after a minute of being in the drive.

Can I hackintosh (is it a verb?) my system?

What OS can I use?

I don't have a multi-layer DVD burner and don't have access to a Mac for a couple of weeks. Are any of the OSs able to be installed using a USB and without access to a Mac?

Thanks in advance

Mike
