Install and Upgrade issues on AMD Phenom PC

Hey all,

I've been working for a little over a month to get 10.5.6 (now 10.5.7) installed on my AMD Phenom machine. I have scoured this forum (and others) trying lots of suggestions - documented below - to no avail. So now I am asking for guidance from the minds here at infiniteMac.

My machine:
AMD Phenom 2.2 Ghz (Quad core)
NForce Chipset (with onboard Ethernet)
Dual 360GB SATA HD
SATA DVD-R
Single 250GB PATA HD
ALC888 sound

What I have tried
1) Downloaded and Successfully installed 10.5.4 using LawlessPPC-Leo-10.5.4-Phenom&AMD
The only problem I have using this distro is that A) it's only 10.5.4 and B) I have to manually install the forcedeth3 drivers I found on another board for the ethernet to work. Otherwise I get a fully functioning 10.5.4 environment. Yay!

I followed a couple of upgrade instructions I have found online (copying the Kernel, using System Update and using safe mode to reload the right kernel, and using the iDeneb upgrade pacakge) but have not been able to upgrade this to anything beyond 10.5.4.
2) Downloaded and attempted to install ideneb 1.4 (or 1.3) - not successful. Ideneb 1.4 hangs up at a "Waiting for System" error before getting to the install screen. I have read this error is common and happens because of a number of BIOS related things. I checked my BIOS settings and can't find anything that indicates there is a problem. AND Lawless works so I don't think it's a BIOS issue.

3) Download and attempt to install iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Universal PPF5 (Final). This gets me through the installer and up to the very first Mac OSX 10.5.6 opening screen, but then tells me I don't have a keyboard. I installed again with the PS2 keyboard hack checked and it never seemed to work. I'll try again while I wait for a response here...

4) Installed LawlessPPC and then attempted to create a bootable USB disk following instruction found on iHackentosh. Again, Lawless installed with no issues, but I haven't been able to lick creating the bootable USB key and getting it to boot. I restore the install disk from an ISO (the ideneb 105.6 ISO) and run the OSx86 tools hack the site refered to but got nowhere - I get a black screen that says "Boot: MBR" "Boot:done"

So, now I don't know what to do next. I would really like to use something other than 10.5.4 - I want to use iLife 09 and Apaerture 2 specifically...

Any ideas on what I should do next?

Thanks in advance for any help or light you can pass my way. I really appreciate it.

Tim C.

for creating a bootable usb disk: do you want to install a running system on this drive or put the install dvd on usb?
a) for the first just pop the dvd in, start install process and choose a partition on the external usb disk (even a big usb stick would do) to install on.
b) to get a install dvd on a usb stick, convert the iso file to dmg (you need osx for that), check it and restore it to the usb memory / disk. only thing lacking is a bootloader, hence install efi or chameleon on that external partition.

for updating to 10.5.7: i got my 10.5.5 lawless to 10.5.7 by using the amdupdate utility by zeph for creating a patched update pack. and i use a voodoo kernel, of course. hope this helps

Install Voodoo kernel & update using apple update.

But be ready to:
- safe boot
- recover voodoo kernel
- reinstall you hardware drivers

p.s. with every update you get new problems to solve . Sometimes they are imposibile to solve. Be ready to it too.

p.s.s. Does update worth it?

Hi Guys

I was using the iatkos V2 on my intel machine and it was working perfectly.

Now that I have upgraded my system I am not able to get the mac installed..

My config is :-

Amd phenom II x4 965 black edition 3.4 ghz
Asus M4A78T-E
Corsair 4gb 1333 Mhz
Samsung sata 1.5 tb
Seagate baracuda sata 500 gb
Seagte baracuda sata 1 tb
Ide dvd writer

I have downloaded the iDeneb v1.3 10.5.5 and patched it with nforce ppf but on booting it always gets stuck on still waiting for root device

I tried F8 and entered mach_kernel rd=disk0s1 -v and on entering this it detects the samsung hdd and doesn't give me the still waiting for root device error but it gives a cpu panic error and the shows darwin kernel and gets stuck on tht screen

One more strange thing tht happ is tht till the time I do not keep on moving the mouse the progress is not shown , the moment I move the mouse it shows the next lines etc but in the end gets stuck on the same either still waiting for root device or on the cpu 0 panic

I have tried a couple of settings in the bios
1) Changed the storage controller from ahci to ide and vice versa
2) Disabled all onboard devices except usb
3) Tried with all the onboard devices enabled
4) Changed the usb 2.0 from hi speed to full speed ( which helped me earlier on intel )
5) Disabled all the hdd except the primary hdd

Tried enetering mach_970 to check but it doesn't load tht from the dvd...

Need help guys...if neone can direct me to a guide or help me with a solution as to which version shud I install 10.5.6 , 10.5.7 , 10.5.8 ...

Thanks in advance....

I got my system running with the SnowLeo OSX86 from the uphuck forums. It even installed the 10.6.6 update perfectly, well.... I had to do the USB fix and everything, but things run pretty smooth after figuring out what kexts needed to be updated and stuff.
