Installing leopard on an External USB HD??

Hi!

Is it possible to install Leopard on an external USB HD? What about later setting the BIOS to boot from the USB drive? Will it work?

I thought about using iATKOS 5i.

My configuration is DELL Inspiron 1545, Intel T6400 (x64) with 4GB RAM.

Thanks alot for your help!

Hi Funky..

Im a new comer to this forum and also to the mac.

Wat i came across was:

-u have to first select the disk utility and create image of the installation dvd(ul get a .dmg file).
-then select ur external hd, format it to mac extended(journaled).
-select restore tab and give source as the .dmg jus created destination will be ur entire external harddrive or its partition and hit restore.
-then select system preference and startup disk and select the external hd there and hit restart.
-now installation begins for the external hd similiar to installing from dvd.
-u will be thus able to install..
jus try this out.
As i said i'm a newbie here and this is jus wat i came across and haven't tried..

Funky,
It works just fine booting from a USB HD. I recommend iPC OSX86 FINAL, which is what I use on my laptop setup. For compatibility with your hardware, check the following link.

Good luck!

itīs rather nice beeing able to install osx on external drives (even memory sticks) or putting the install dvd on an usb-stick.

i have such a external install as a spare system in case of emergency.

Boot from USB drive

My motherboard is a little flakey with booting off USB devices.. With Chameleon 2.0 RC1 I was able to plug my USB-HDD in, and it would detect it and I could boot off of it, without going through the BIOS. Nifty.

Previously known as NebulOSX. MacBook, 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo Penryn, 2GB RAM, x3100 Graphics. - Mac Nano (Benchmarks)- Gigabyte GA-GC230D, Intel Atom 230 1.7GHZ (Overclocked), 2GB 533Mhz RAM, Mac OS X Leopard: Boot132 Method. ULTRAcheap build. With desktop GMA950 graphics fix.

As far as I understood, you have to boot the machine through DVD to be able to install any Hackintosh distribution. If thats not the case, how do I install from USB stick on external HDD, boot it from USB stick?
I am quite confused, anyone for didactic instructions?

Trying to install Hackintosh on HP a1219, Athlon 64 (V) 3400+ 2.2 GHz, MSI-7184, AC97 Audio Controller (Realtek ALC658C 6-channel CODEC chipset) , ATI Radeon Xpress 200, Realtek 8100C Onboard LAN, 1GB RAM, 1TB SATA (or 60GB IDE connected through SATA-to-IDE connector), Pioneer DVD burner, PS2 keyboard and mouse, 6 USB & 2 firewire ports

i guess you are right, you need a running osx system (or install dvd) to use the apps required.
it might work with other systems, but with much more difficulty.

You should be able to install FROM USB and also TO USB, even in combination with a DVD (DVD to USB).
Installing to USB is straightforward as OS X sees any USB Drive as any other fixed drive valid for installation, but sometimes requires repartitioning and reformatting the USB Drive, specially if its a USB Stick. That can be done from the Install DVD's Disk Utility. You need to be able to boot from the USB of course (most new systems can do that).
Installing from USB requires a working OS X to copy the contents of the Install DVD to the USB Drive (after repartitioning it if needed). Maybe it could be done booting from an Install DVD too but I havent tried it.
