You don't need to aquire a NEW distro in order to make your sound or wifi work. Most times those (specific) installers on the iso can be found (or given to you from someone who has the distro already) from somewhere on the web.

when you were using windows on your machine, what was the brand of the sound and wireless?

I think THESE are your specs for the hardware, but being direct from HP they aren't giving me too much info to go on.
I went off their driver download page for my laptop. The drivers for the sound are "conextant high definition", the "NVIDIA Nforce chipset", and the Broacom Wifi.

Would you mind if I sent you a PM? I don't want to clutter this thread with my current issues.
