Okay that seemed to work..system is backing up as I type. Will not be totally convinced until I need to recover from some sort of catastrophe, but in the mean time I do feel a bit more confident.
To bad this trick does not work for my video card, then maybe I can once again have a fully functional OS with all the bells in whistles. Still no answer for my QE/CI support, but that is for another day.
