This could be useful... like at school or a friends house

PROTOCOLX 02-09-2010 12:18 PM

Yes it is useful... And very handy if you gonna buy a laptop or so...

Just take your iPortable pendrive with you and you can test MacOSX Snowleopard right away!

I also don't reealy see the sense of a prepatched Disk Image that needs a working OS X Install. Everyone who has got such one could do this himself.
Maybe realising an Image that could be restored to the HD using dd or similiar like the very first OSx86 releases, would be more useful. :)

Okay, I didn't know that... :) That it was against the rules... Other forum didn't make a problem of it... But I respect the rules of this forum... :)

The sense of this pre-patched image is that this image almost works on any Intel PC! This can be very useful cause this image fits on 6.5GB USB pendrive or any other external or internal harddrive!

So you can take it with you if you going to buy a laptop or netbook! Most people know that the information on HCL wiki isn't any guarantee that it will work! This USB pendrive can be used to test any Intel computer on the fly!! (No DSTD needed)

Second, there are a lot of people (including me..) that were not able to install Snowleopard in the first place! Now with this working image there are a lot people who have a working Snowleopard installation! (Look on different forums)

Third, I'm working on the very same image with a Window/PC installation method.. With this method you have a working Snowleopard installation within 10 minutes! You don't need any OS to install! It will be available very soon!
(This Mac installation image is more like a test version for the PC installer to come..)
(This is more in you're way of 'sense' I think..)

I do understand your opinion, that it make's no sense to need a working OSX to install a Snowleopard..
Cause most people here will know how install Snowleopard from distro or retail with Empire EFI..

But there are a lot of people who don't know how to do it!
That's the reason there are some many questions about it!
This image is just for the 'noobs' that aren't able to select the right drivers and patches!

This image was designed to help a lot of people in the OSx86 scene!

I don't really understand why you do the same... You already posted a torrent from my very own account on Piratebay! ^_^

p.s. download links are deleted...

haha I don't need any OS but Windows? :D That's even worse. :p ;)

I do not want to criticize your idea of an universall preinstalled image itself - exactly the opposite: as I wrote I even like the idea of having Snow Leopard Release in the vein of early OSx86 Builds like the good old deadmoo image.
Nor could I say something about your work, as I haven't tested it.

My only critique was the dmg format as it's supported by OS X only, which I think is very unhandy. With having a full hard disk or partition image, there are much more options you could use it.
For example you could use such an image to create an Linux / shell script based installer, allowing the user to restore the image & installing the bootloader to an selected harddrive. - Just a little idea of mine of course. ;)

Sorry but I disagree with this.
I think a lot of the noob postings are a result of people, who are making the empty promise that OS X could be installed on any Hardware just with using some universall prepatched release - this simply ain't fact in the very most cases.
Ofcourse such releases can be a grade-A help for people with more complicated hardware, but without having at least some knowledge. these people automatically run into problems - at the latest when a system upgrade overwrites the Kernel Binary of their 50% working installation or something like that...^^

I am pretty sure I did not.

I guess you are talking about the Hazard Distro Thread - there are no Download Links and never have been such.

PROTOCOLX 02-09-2010 06:08 PM

Yes it is a bit unhandy to have a .DMG installation, but it contains a CopyCatX image so it didn't make any sense to make another file of it cause you just need a working OSX to install it...

But this is more some sort of test version for those who already managed to run OSX on their computer but also for just those people who have 'real' Mac!

After these results I can upload the other image which easily can be restored with Clonezilla liveCD,
(so you don't need Windows..) ;)

I just don't have the knowledge to make a script, cause I ain't a developer! I just put working things together to make a package that works in most configurations.. And it's easy to edit your install to your needs...

(But if you have any idea's to make this image more useful, you're very welcome!)

I see now that there are no any links for the Hazard distro... :) Was only in my mind cause of the picture that you posted...

http://bayimg.com/image/fagajaacl.jpg ;)

@Imkantus

You're welcome to test it!

And if you have any idea's to make this image more useful, you're very welcome!...

Like: 'to create an Linux / shell script based installer, allowing the user to restore the image & installing the bootloader to an selected harddrive'

That sounds very useful indeed, but I do not have the knowledge to do that so... If you can give me any tips, it would be nice...

The results of iPortable are quite positive so far... So any improvements to new coming PC installer would be appreciated!!

Hi PROTOCOLX, Thank you for creating a wonderful OSx86 distro. I am still downloading this one, but I am using your old iGenius 10.5.6 - HFS Plus - non Journaled (for write access in Linux).

My HDD is a external USB 2.0 Seagate FreeAgent Go 500 GB 5400 RPM one which is GPT partitioned (Pure GPT - not Hybrid). I use it for storing backups of my personal files as well as for booting Mac (iGenius one presently).

I setup the iGenius Mac as follows :-

1) Boot a mac from 16 GB Kingston pendrive.

2) Partitioned my external USB HDD as GPT (I have absolutely no problem with GPT) with a 35 GB HFS+ (non-Journaled - to have r/w access in Linux).

3) Use Copycatx to restore iGenius to that partition.

4) Manually setup Chameleon using terminal following the instructions in the readme file.

5) Reboot with the USB HDD as first boot device in the BIOS.

I have a few questions :-

1) Does installing this iPortable to the same partition involve any other step apart from the ones mentioned?

2) What is DSDT? Why is it important for Snow Leopard and why is it not important for booting Leopard (I do not have a DSDT.aml file - did not understand what is that in the first place)?

3) Do I need to manually install Chameleon in my USB HDD or will the Empire EFI (or the myhack tools) do that job?

4) Do I need to modify my EFI System Partition (FAT32 filesystem - not HFS+)? I use it to boot Linux with GRUB2 as a x64 UEFI Binary (not a Apple FAT EFI binary) and my Windows using bootmgfw.efi (Windows Boot Manager x64 EFI Binary)

5) Can I select a AMD compatible kernel while booting iPortable Snow? (mine is Intel - my friend's laptop is AMD)

6) You mention that this is a copycatx "MBR" image. Does that mean this image cannot boot from GPT? Is it the image of the full disk (including the MBR boot code and partition table) or just the image of the partition/volume (like the iGenius one)?

7) Will this iPortable support a IDE HDD (SATA mode - Legacy IDE in my Dell Phoenix BIOS)? iGenius boots with AHCI SATA mode only.

8) In my iGenius installation, everytime I boot I get "Firewire UUID or GUID error" wherein the GUID is shown as 000000000000000000000 (just zeros). How to correct this? My booting is slow because of this error.

9) My iGenius restarts always irrespective of whether I selecy Restart or Shutdown option? How can I make it shutdown properly?

10) Do you know of any kext(s) for ATI Mobility Radeon HD3450 (note I need kext for the "Mobility" Card, not the desktop one).

By the way VoodooHDA is great for my sound needs (IDT codec), and Voodoo Battery detects my Battery properly. Both ApplePS2Controller and VoodooPS2 kexts work for my Laptop's Keyboard and Trackpad (Alps). Many Thanks to Voodoo team for Chameleon, the kexts and many other programs that I may not know of. I am new to Mac OS but I do know quite a bit about Windows and Linux.

For those keen on setting up Windows to boot in UEFI-GPT mode follow the instructions in this link - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/lof...ex.php/t186440 .

My laptop specs :-

Dell India Studio 1537, Intel Core2Duo P8400 (supports Intel Virtualization extensions), 4 GB DDR2 RAM, 320 GB 5400 RPM internal HDD, ATI Mobility Radeon HD3450 (256 MB RAM), Intel 5100 Wifi Card, Widcomm Bluetooth, Optiarc DVD writer

Windows 7 x86_64 Professional RTM in UEFI-GPT mode (my UEFI is tianocore.sourceforge.net EDK DUET UEFI64 option - checkout tiano-efi-duet-folder-sk.4shared.com for my builds), and Fedora Linux 12 x86_64 with GRUB2 x64 UEFI Binary as my bootloader.

Check this link http://grub.enbug.org/XNUSupport for loading XNU kernel using GRUB2.

Finally I want to know how to backup my installed and modified iGenius to a Clonezilla image. The iGenius is installed in a 30 GB HFS+ partition. I would like to backup this up to a compressed image and restore it to my 16 GB Kingston UFD and then boot from this UFD to restore "iPortable Snow" to the same 30 GB Partition once its downloaded. Is is possible using Clonezilla? My main doubt is that here the source partition is 30 GB and the destination is 15 GB. (The used space in the 30 GB volume presently is only 10.5 GB so my guess is that there should be no problem in cloning it to a 15 GB partition). But in CopycatX and Clonezilla websites it is specifically mentioned that the destination partition size should be equal or greater than the source partition. What about the destination partition being smaller than the source but being bigger than the used space in the source partition, will it work?

PROTOCOLX 03-01-2010 04:25 PM

I think it possible with clonezilla, but I have problems with it cause it won't let me restore a cloned partition to a new one.. Only a cloned device will be restored successfully.. But then you will get the exact same size from your cloned device.. That's not always wanted... :(

skodabenz 03-02-2010 08:02 AM

Answering some of my own questions in my previous post,

1) The FireWire GUID error (in iGenius) was solved by removing AppleFWAudio.kext and IOFireWire* kexts from /System/Library/Extensions and deleting /System/Library/Extensions.mkext and rebooting with -v -f option.

2) No need to touch the EFI System Partition.

3) iPortable can be restored to a GPT Partition.

4) Clonezilla (in my opinion) is good for cloning only whole disks, it is not good for cloning individual partitions. For cloning HFS+ Clonezilla relies on Partclone (http://partclone.org/) to do the job. So maybe partclone alone can be used to clone the partition. Try http://partedmagic.com/ .

5) After restoring the iPortable volarchive I only had to reinstall Chameleon's MBR boot code (440 bytes).

My Ideas :

I think it is always better to rely on the native image format for Mac (dmg). There are tools like HFSExplorer and DMGExtractor (both java cross-platform apps) to do the job, from http://hem.bredband.net/catacombae/index2.html . HFSExplorer allows one to view HFS/HFS+ filesystems from a dmg file (including zlib,bzip2 and other compressed ones), from a raw dump (dd copy) of a HFS+ partition or even a partition itself (in both Windows and Linux). DMGExtractor converts compressed or uncompressed dmg files to raw image format which can be written to a partition or disk using dd tool.

I have tested these tools in both Windows (mine is Win 7 Pro x64) and Linux (Fedora 12 x64). For Linux users using OpenJDK, which comes natively wwith many linux distros, these tools will not work. They need to download the JRE version from Sun's website.

BTW I have downloaded iPortable Snow but couldn't get it to get past the "Creating your account" screen at all (mach_kernel with arch=i386 and -v ). The screen just freezes but the mouse cursor still moves. I waited for about an hour before pressing the power button (force shutdown). If I restart I get a bule screen with a cursor problem.

I tried almost all the ways you described like :-

touch /private/var/db/.AppleSetupDone (in single user mode - restarting after the screen freeze)

platform=X86PC or PciRoot=0 or PciRoot=1

I also get a few errors everytime I boot iPortable (not necessarily in the same order) :-

launchctl : Convert to launchd /etc/mach_init.d/dashboard/advisoryd.plist

FakeSMC : key info not found MSDS, length - 6

ACPI_SMC_PlatformPlugin::start - wait For Service (resourcematching (AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement) timed out

system shutdown false

I had absolutely no problem in User Registration in iGenius 10.5.6 . I am unable to even see the desktop of iPortable Snow. Please help me.

Few other problems and doubts I still have :

1) Shutdown/Restart problem. It occurs randomly, not always.

2) What is DSDT?

I found out the cause of the problem of "Rebuild this volume" error when iPortable is restored. It is due to the fact thet HFS+ filesystems use a block size of 4096 bytes while the partitioning programs use a block size of 512 bytes. This error will not occur if the the size of the destination partition in bytes is a multiple of 4096, or the number of 512 byte sectors in the destination is a multiple of 8 (4096/512 = 8).

For Example : 7 GB partition => 7*1024*1024*1024 bytes = 7516192768 bytes => 7516192768/4096 = 1835008 (therefore multiple of 4096)
or 7516192768 bytes => 7516192768/512 = 14680064 sectors of 512 bytes each => 14680064/8 = 1835008 (therefore multiple of 8)

No error will occur when restoring iPortable to the above mentioned partition. But

7.6 GB Partition => 8160437862.4 bytes => not a multiple of 4096 => the error will occur.

For GPT partitioning I use GPT fdisk by Rod Smith - http://rodsbooks.com/gdisk/ and http://sourceforge.net/projects/gptfdisk/ .

Finally I used DSDT Patcher GUI to create dsdt.aml file in my iGenius Mac. Can I copy the same file to iPortable Snow or do I need to create a new dsdt.aml file in iPortable Snow? Thank you.

PROTOCOLX 03-04-2010 02:49 PM

No you don't need a different DSTD file for Leopard or Snow Leopard...

But about the bluescreen... I just found out that iPortable Snow has a 64bit problem... :(

Did you try legacy_kernel or any other kernel in 32bits modus?

Cause mach_kernel or any other kernel in 64bits modus will result in bluescreens with mouse...

So iPortable Snow x86 is really x86... :D

This wasn't planned, but I think I accidentally removed some 64bit code or something ... I gonna fix this, and put it in the Clonezilla image when it is finished..

But you should try too boot in 32bits modus with any other kernel but no mach_kernel...

THX skodabenz.. for the links... I gonna try parted magic!!

Destinony has won again. Please help.

I’m a 63 year-old construction worker displaced by an illegal work force and making a documentary about the working man’s plight. Apple stopped supporting Mac PC, which means I need a completely new system to finish my project, but no funds. I got a special piece of software that requires to be run on Intel Mac. So I’m hacking my old homebuilt PC to emerge as a Hackintosh.

I researched and found that the leader of this board also uses the same board. I bought a legal copy of SL and downloaded his iPortable Snow x86. But my Intel PC wouldn’t recognize the flash drive and asks me if I want to format it.

After checking bios setup, I figure the old bios needs updating and attempt to go online. The last time I went online with this computer was dial up and now I’m on High speed cable. After much effort, I can’t configure it to work and so use my older Mac, G-4-Tiger, to download the appropriate bios from Asus. After much difficulty getting to a dos prompt, I finally attempt a bios refresh through Afuse on a floppy. I then get an error telling me the bio’s ID is incorrect. Then to move on, I use my old Mac to place the SL hack on an properly formated IDE drive and place it directly in the Intel PC computer. After several bios changes, all I get is a blinking bare prompt (blinks faster than the usual dos prompt) but not able to type. I then plug in my usb keyboard and still not able to type.

Suggestions would be much appreciated.:(

wifi on a compaq mini 110

Hi Protocolx

Running iportable_snow_x86 on a compaq mini 110 and got the sound and power management working.
Trying to get wifi working and tried and edited different kext.
The internal wireless card is a broadcom 94132 which, apparently is somewhat similar to a brcm4312.

Is there a other workaround to get this thing going?

Any info or comment is welcome

edited 18/04

Got the broadcom wifi driver loaded, but can't be initialized (using the AppleAirportBrcm4311.kext)
