Sleep on AMD - report your experience

I know, it's a well discussed topic, but it always ends with "Hey, we're AMD, not Intel". I think that's no reason to capitulate, so let's start collecting information about sleep on AMD. I think it's not only up to the processor, but to the mobo - so let's collect information about your success or non-succes with sleep on your AMD-System. Please post your specs, too, so we can compare and draw a conclusion. I'll start.

<b>My success with sleep on my AMD with the SleepKernel looks like this:</b>
- changing ACPI-Mode in BIOS to "S1" and changing ACPI-Mode in system, too, let my sleep work - but only a "half-sleep". Hard drives are shut down, but the fans still are turned on, so no really success.
- changing ACPI-Mode in BIOS to "S3" and changing ACPI-Mode in system, too, brings my system to the deep-sleep. No noise, but wake up doesn't work. Just a black screen and a running system.
- changing ACPI-Mode in BIOS to "S1 and S3" and changing ACPI-Mode between "S0, S1, S3, S5 and S7" doesn't work, too. System gets into "half-sleep" and can't be woken up.

<b>My system specs:</b>
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice (SSE3)
NVidia GeForce 6600GT PCI-E (working with NVInject, dual screen working with DVI-VGA converter)
EPOX 9HEAI Rev 3 Mainboard with VIA K8T890 and VT8237R chipset

<b>My experiments worked like this:</b>
- changing the kernel from default Zeph-Kernel to SleepKernel (by using Kalyway kernel installer - see attachment)
- changing BIOS ACPI-Mode
- changing system's ACPI-Mode by typing following commands in Terminal:

<font color="#333333">pmset -g | grep hibernatemode</font>

<i>Change ACPI-Mode</i>
<font color="#333333">sudo pmset -a hibernatemode X</font>

X is the number of the ACPI-Mode. Here a <b>list of the available modes</b>:

# 0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
# 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
# 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
# 5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
# 7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.

Attached is the Kalyway Kernel Installer with all available kernels. If you want to try sleep at your system, the first step is to install the SleepKernel.

I'm using the sleep kernel and mode 0, not sure which mode is should use btw?

But mode 0 seems to work, will try others too :)

This is my setup

AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (SSE3)
NVidia 8600GT PCI-E, using EFI string
MCP61 Chipset

I am running S1 with option # 3 and it seems to be working quite well now. Everything is still functional when it wakes up. Sweet! :D

One more box never waking from sleep here :( In fact it does not even tries to hibernate (susped-to-disk): it's going low-power in seconds, and that's definitely not enough to store all 2Gb of ram to disk

I was a bit hesitated at first, but I still tried. It all works finally without having to improperly restart my system...running S1 with option # 3. My specs can be found at my account info. =)

By the way, I think VIA isn't very compatible to sleep (I got a VIA-chipset, too, and it only supports half-sleep).

i don't know what kernel was there earlier.i used zep's AMD 10.5.2 release rev.1

problem is not able to mount usb drive .. it is detected but not mounted..?

help me to revert it back.pls

One question that might sounds stupid, When the MAC is in sleep mode should "awake" with a simple mouse mouvement or a keypress?

For me, i need to press the flickering power button on the pc itself to wake it up :)
It doesn't respond to any key presses or mouse clicks/movements (Aluminum Apple keyboard & Mighty mouse)

I thing on Kalyways DVD was a kernal which fully disabled sleep - great. Actually it's so when I press the off button the computer short the computer goes to sleep but I can't wake it up. This also happens when sleeping is fully disabled.

for testing sleep i updated kernel using allkernel pkg.But now USB ports are not working.

help me revert back to Kernel 9.20 ( which came with Zep's AMD Leopard 10.5.2 Rev 1 )

i don't know the procedure or how to do it.

Same as p-J for the Dell, similar system, perfect sleep.

As for the other one (Athlon64 3700+, A8N-E, nForce4, Radeon X1600), no sleep. Well it does sleep, but it doesn't come back.

How do I change the ACPI mode in Bios?

I have changed the system ACPI mode with terminal and put it to 3 and with a quick try that I made last night it went to sleep and then it woke up, but I didn't had keyboard or mouse. So I don't know if it was fully funtional.

Also I am using the plain TOH 9.2.0 kenrel that comes with Zephyroth 10.5.2 Rev.2 iso, I have tryied to change with the sleep kernel from Kaliway but I can't boot into my system, so I have returned to the old kernel.

You should be able to change the ACPI mode in your Bios about your "Power Management" or similiar. I know, that some Bios don't support that kind of options (for example the AHCI/SATA-Mode), but I think ACPI should work on every board and Bios.

Oh, I'd suggest you to think this step over again, don't you know this important poem? "Never change a running system!" And I'd be carefully with the BIOS, because without you got a problem. ;-)

I'm using 10.5.2 Rev.1 on the non-sleep computer.

Leo4all v3 on the other...that works...

I installed Kalyway 10.5.2 AMD/Intel on my Athlon 64x2 4000+ using the sleep kernel. I tried sleep and it worked, and woke, but my external drives disconnected giving the disconnect error; then came back on line.

Well I have tried with the 9.2.2 kernel and the system doesn't wake up from the "deep sleep". It only works if the hard drives and the monitor are sleeping.

I have tried to change the ACPI to 3 from 0 and the ACPI in Bios from S1 to S3 but nothing again. But it doesn't mind since I have now the system fully working.

So does sleep work on zeph 10.5.2 rev2. I am using 9.1.0 sleep kernel. In my case it doesn't on nforce 4. Do i need to play with any kexts.
