LawlessPPC-Leo-10.5.4-Phenom&AMD

This image is a remixed Zephyroth 10.5.2 rev2 release.
If this DVD does not boot on your system then its not meant to be installed on your system!!!

Changes to Zephyroth release are as follows.

*** Chameleon bootloader Ver 1.0.11 (used for DVD booting & installed on drive by default.)
*** Modbin 9.4.0 Kernel SSE3 (installed by default)
*** Alc888 (audio) 3 port, 6 ports + Digital (Fixed)
*** NTFS-3G latest version (solves slow shutdowns)
*** ATI SB600 Issue (solves still waiting for root device when trying to install)
*** ATI HD-3650 Support (QE/CI Enabled) No white menus!!!)

The reason for installing chameleon and kernel automatically is because too many people are posting in forums about drives not booting after install (not marked as active) chameleon solves theses problem. The kernel on auto is because I can confirm this works with Phenom and is the latest it also comes with the correct system.kext which seems to be a common problem

CPU Support
In theory this should work on all AMD SSE3 systems Phenom, Athlon X2 etc

If after install you can not boot from hardrive try -v -f switches at the Chameleon (Darwin) Bootlader screen.
If you get strange graphics on boot you should boot in safe mode (-x switch at Bootloader screen) then install best drivers from within the OS for your graphics chips/card.

All thanks should be given to all those that have done the real work before I got my hands on it.

Zephyroth (For fine releases for AMD)
Zef (for producing Chameleon Bootloader) helping and his patience)
Kabl (For CPU Support In Chameleon)
Shadow3K (the reason I was able to install OSX on phenom in the first place)

Also the authors of all the drivers in this release with out them it just wouldnt be as much fun or possible.

Now the warning. If your machine blows up, you loose all drive data, your CPU melts or your wife leaves you!!!!!
I am not responsible. All risks on installation are taken by you and you are responsible for installing it (you made that choice).

P.S. for dual boot systems (single drive) I would recommend installing OSX first then your other choice it should work the other way round but this would be the safest method.

Please post your results at http://www.infinitemac.com/discussions/ in the right thread

If for any reason ther is no thread one will soon be generated even if it just to redirect you

Well, that's because there's only one (probably not too fast) seeder - having it uploaded to r*pidsh*re or so would probably make it faster, but I guess we'll just have to be a little more patient. :)

the main purposes of this disc are to stop people from not being able to recognise why it didnt start eg apple logo with no entry etc, Non bootable installs (no bootlaoder or partition not active) & phenom support aswell as 10.5.4. Its a bit more fool proof than the others

Install went great, all working except audio (ALC882). 7300GT, AMD Athlon 64 X2 5200+, DFI Infinity Mobo, nForce 570.

Only problem.. random hangs, including mouse. competely frozen. Happened once running xbench, and again just now logging into a website in firefox.

How do I troubleshoot that?

LawlessPPC

@lungkao

cpu cores will only show 1. System monitor should show all cores active and what percentage

LawlessPPC
07-24-2008, 08:24 PM
@synmoo

do you have 4GB of memory if so thats the problem its well documented. It only affects nforce chipset I believe you need to run the argument for only 3.5GB.

<key>Kernel Flags</key>
<string>maxmem=3456</string>

you need to add that to com.apple.boot.plist in root:library/preferences/systemconfiguration

hope this helps

@LawlessPPC

I only have 2GB. No panic log and system log offered no help.

I am also experiencing profiler saying 1 core, but everything else says 2. About this mac has wrong ram speed also. Shows 400 when I have 800.

Edit:

Update... I've gotten xbench to crash, not a kernel panic though. top details:
Process: Xbench [282]
Path: /Applications/Xbench.app/Contents/MacOS/Xbench
Identifier: com.spiny.xbench
Version: 1.3 (1.3)
Code Type: X86 (Native)
Parent Process: launchd [145]

Date/Time: 2008-07-24 16:02:10.411 -0400
OS Version: Mac OS X 10.5.4 (9E17)
Report Version: 6

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)
Exception Codes: KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE at 0x0000000000000004

LawlessPPC
07-24-2008, 10:04 PM
everybodies profiler will say 1 core thats the nature of the beast untill someone comes up with a patch or you physically edit applesmbios if i remember rightly same with mem speeds see here -------> http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=112134&hl=smbios . But if you check activity monitor you will see they are there and working

The majority of exc_bad_access errors ive had have been before the program was patched with marvin. I will see if I experience the same probs.

Thanx

Alot of people over at leo4all forum are having great success with your release
the only thing they said still doesn't work is msn messenger just like zeph's releases

LawlessPPC
07-25-2008, 08:16 PM
hmmm I will need to look into the MSN problem as its something thats always bugged me do these people have sucess on other distro's.

@ syh921223

Try to disable as much of the hardware as you can in bios eg firewire, usb, network adapter, graphics card. Then just install your chipset drivers if you get that far. Tell me how you go on you go on.

Thanx Everyone for your feedback

@LawlessPPC: let your system rest for a while... I've got a couple sources seeding and will continue to do so for at least a week to ensure people get it and let the seeding grow. I've also directed support questions to this forum so you may see a few new members peeking in to ask some NOOB questions. I'm sure we'll all try to help out with that (as that is the way we do it at this forum). Cheers.

I'm seeding too, and I have a pretty good up speed imo for an "american" broadband connection. 60 kb/s is what I limit it to though, since I need to be able to still use my internet shared amongst 5 people.

hi all
i tried leopard 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 from zeph
in 5.1 the installer throws an error when installing files into the disk
in 5.2 it just keeps rebooting

so my last hope is this release... (that only have 1 seed right now u.u)

my proc is amd phenom 9750 (x4),chipset AMD 770, 2 gb ram, gpu geforce 8800gt and sata hdd... can you say me if will this version work???

and thanks for your very good work!

I`m trying it on my BenQ P52 lappy cause it seems to be only way to get 10.5.4 update ( tried many ways to update - always crashed my os ). Will post results.

nfoav8or
07-26-2008, 04:45 PM
@waiflih: Your system specs all fit in the range of what LawlessPPC designed this for. Just make sure you Customize to select all the specially needed kexts for it. I hope you find it to be one of the best releases yet.

As with everyone else, this "distro" works great on my system and so far the only tiny hiccup in it is one that everyone else has pointed out... MSN messenger (which I don't use anyways). I did have to open the Terminal and ensure the permissions were reset to the proper ones as well as fix the audio (alc888 didn't install correctly from the DVD).

ikari7789
07-26-2008, 05:31 PM
LOL, well, I thought that this distro would work, and it installed without a hitch, but now, when I go to boot the machine, I get the "Still waiting for root device" message. Seemingly out of nowhere considering when I installed it from the DVD it found my PATA drive without a hitch. I'm going to try re-installing within the next couple hours here to see if I can get it to work. I'll post my results then.

nfoav8or
07-26-2008, 06:17 PM
which third party kexts did you Customize your install with?

ikari7789
07-26-2008, 06:34 PM
Well, that's why I'm re-trying.... I started the install somewhere around 2 AM and I was quite tired, so I didn't notice the customize button, which I'm now doing. Pretty much the only thing I chose was the SB600 kext because I forgot to last time. I'm hoping that that should clear up all my problems. It's currently installing. I didn't choose any others because I figured I could install them afterwards once I know what my hardware is. (Didn't pay much attention during Windows install because it found everything automatically.)

ikari7789
07-26-2008, 06:43 PM
Nope, doesn't look that worked either... I'm still getting the grey screen with a slashed circle. Booting with "-v" tells me that it is the same problem I was having before the reinstall "Still waiting for root device." I'm gonna find the root of this problem somehow. There's got to be something on the DVD that is making it boot but then isn't installed when I install OSx86. Any suggestions?

LawlessPPC
07-26-2008, 07:35 PM
rather than listing everybody individually (this doesnt mean I'm any less gratefull)
Thankyou for your input. Now to the bugs LOL

Ok the Nforce7 support is totally unknown to me (i didnt know it was supported) I will have to check.
Same goes for SB700 I have no knowledge of a working kext for this. But I will look into it.

@Ikari7789 I know what your issue is no chipset driver installed or maybe the way you have your bios setup.

Please keep posting as all the bugs are to be tackled on a total rebuild.

I need ppls repsonses becuase the only hardware I can test on is Nforce4, SB600, Alc888, VIA, SSE3, SSE2, Phenom, ADI1988 (i think), CMedia 8738, Athlon X2 5000, Geforce8400 GS, ATI HD3650.

So as you see its quite limited.

If you find kexts (drivers to things that dont work please supply links or give as much info as possible as this will be in the next build but dont expect it too soon. As this release was essentially just a play to see what I could achieve in little over a week (I think).

For those who have issues please make sure you understand how to install OSX first.

The only non user input fully automated parts of this install are the booting of the DVD, The kernel installation and the bootloader and partition activation (these seemed to cause the most headaches). Everything else is down to user intervention.

So please help me and if I dont know whats broke I cant fix it.

@ Nfoav8or which alc888 was it 3 port, 6 port or digital

Thanx

LawlessPPC

P.s. please be kind and dont forget its a BETA

nfoav8or
07-26-2008, 08:11 PM
@Lawless
6 Port... but I've tried each of the included ones. I've just gone back to my AppleHDAPatcher with the text file fix. Its no big deal. easily fixed but not ideal.

To everyone else asking questions about the installs... another good place to look if you want to hep yourself learn regarding installs is the OSx86 <a href="http://osx86.wikidot.com/">wiki page</a>. A lot of old but useful fixes, installers, etc. can be found at this site.

LawlessPPC
07-26-2008, 08:21 PM

did it complain about badly installed kext when you booted for alciject.kext etc or not

Thanx

LawlessPPC

ikari7789
07-26-2008, 09:24 PM
Let's see, if it's a BIOS related thing, I have nothing but the base settings enabled. I tried all three of the RAID modes (IDE, RAID, AHCI) and none of them allowed OSx86 to boot. I've now re-installed it on a freshly formatted partition 3 times using custom settings and choosing the SB600 kext each time, the latest time installing all the kexts for my system because I looked them up. I still get the "Still waiting for root device" and I cannot figure out why.

LawlessPPC
07-27-2008, 12:42 AM
ikari7789 can you tell me your motherboard model. Also if you look up the spider platform thread and install the sb600 kext by hand then boot with -v -f then install it again with kext helper.

Tell me how you go on

Thanx
LawlessPPC

ikari7789
07-27-2008, 01:29 AM
I have the MSI K9A2 Platinum Rev 1.0

So... the SB600 kext isn't installed with your build of 10.5.4?
I can grab the kext for the SB600 from the other thread, I know where it's at.
Where do I install it at though once I get it? I can use transmac with Vista correct?
I don't really feel like using USB to do it because it's my primary hdd.

nfoav8or
07-27-2008, 03:36 AM
well if you can still boot up with the DVD you can place the kext on a flash drive and install it to your drive in the
<b>/System/Library/Extensions/</b> folder. The permissions can then be set manually using the Terminal (for this I will use "Leopard" as the name of the volume you installed to):

<b>chmod -R 755 /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/</b>
<b>chown -R root:wheel /Volumes/Leopard/System/Library/Extensions/</b>

Since you can't boot from your OS X drive, you'll be unable to use kext helper right away...
but that is a lot easier to just drag-n-drop-n-forget.

transmac is good, but it defeats the ability to get to know your Mac System. using the DVD and a flash drive will allow yo to get into the weeds a little more... I think everyone should be able to use the Terminal.

remember... to copy a file in Terminal:

<b>cp -R /path/to/original/file /path/to/new/location/</b>

hope that helps.

@LawlessPPC
It stated a few errors at startup dealing with permissions... yeah, the alcinject but also the broadcom wireless kext. fixed permissions through the Terminal and by installing my audio through AppleHDAPatcher... Its working fine now on my Test drive. I'm thinking of installing it to my main drive (I like the fact that I can use Time Machine again...). I want to install fully from DVD to see if I can correct any noob mistakes I might have done through the Customize option.
Except for those few hiccups, I think its a sound installer! Good work mate.

Cheers, Stix

@ikari7789
no worries mate. You'll get through this eventually. I was in your shoes about a year ago. I owned a PC but also went and bought a Macbook. After using my Macbook, I found myself going to my Windows PC less and less until I finally just needed it for work. Now I solely use OS X... with VMWare Fusion of course for the work requirement.

It may sound sucky but to really make your system work well, you may want to backup your Windows files externally and then reinstall completely over your main HD. If you have an extra HD lying around, it may be better to just install OS X to that one only for the time being until you find out exactly how to make your system work. The BIOS should still give you the option to boot to a specific HD (which you can select between reboots).

What kind of other Hardware do you have in your computer (besides motherboard, you stated that already)?
hint: go to "About This Mac" and "More Info" to get to System Profiler while in the install DVD to make a list of what OS X sees.

Good luck and happy hacking.

Yeah, I do have a spare HD, but I just popped it into my server unfortunately :(
It wouldn't really work anyways seeing as all of the ports on my PC are already taken up.

I don't really care as much about losing my main drive partition because I've got everything backed-up on my RAID and is where I keep all my media. I just need to reinstall programs which takes about an hour for all my big programs besides CS3 and Office. I've used mac before (10.4.9) on my old server machine, but I just got my new computer for graduation and figured that I'd give it a shot. Thanks for the tip about using a USB drive. Didn't even think about it even though you could do the exact same thing with windows... LOL. I use Windows extensively and use Mac for fun. I'm a gamer so Windows is where I'm needed + I just find it a lot more compatible and less nerve wracking to use. But I'm also a computer enthusiast, so I prefer to have a wide understanding of hardware and software. I've sorta lost hope with Linux, I just don't see the mass appeal when you need to sudo everything, but on Mac I've noticed that it just isn't as irritating. The Linux people always seem to be raving about how nice it is and how nice it looks, but as far as I've seen, the only way to really do anything on it is all through a terminal which annoys the hell out of me because I copy lots of files and such. And I prefer organization so it usually ends up being depths of folders and copying my terminal just gets too annoying that just drag and drop. (I don't keep everything on my desktop like most people)

My specs:
psu: 650w Antec EarthWatts
mobo: MSI K9A2 Platinum 790FX
cpu: AMD Phenom 9850 BE
gfx: 2x ATi Radeon HD 4850 512mb
ram: 2x 2GB Corsair Dominator PC2-8500
hdd: 1x Seagate 250GB (PATA)
3x Seagate 250GB (SATA-I) / 1x Western Digital 250GB (SATA-II) (RAID 0)
optical: Sony DRU-530A (really old, but it works well xD)

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'm also just experimenting with Mac right now because there isn't support for my gfx card yet and probably won't be for a while, so I'm just basically at the mindset now that it SHOULD be possible so I'm GOING to make it to happen.

Sounds like a sweet setup to me. Rock on. I agree with the games, but I'm sold on my PS3 and X-Box so I use my PC for other things. I may be 25 but I still feel the need to play. haha.

Where all have you searched for your graphics card? I was just looking for an EFI solution but am unsure how Chameleon reacts to native EFI input strings as of right now.

Booting to a PATA drive is usually better in OS X because of the hiccups the support for SATA gives.

I have a PS3 and a Wii that I use for gaming, but there aren't always enough things to keep me entertained on them so I need the PC for miscellaneous things such as word processing and gfx and video editing since I'll never achieve the capabilities on a hackintosh that I have on the native PC or Mac. And since I'm a poor college student, don't really have enough money for a macbook either. The graphics card just came out on the 25th of June and is different enough from the HD 38xx series that it needs a new driver written for it. I've looked and it seems like there might be support for them in the 10.6 beta, but they haven't gotten a confirmation from their beta source yet.

yes it does install drivers for sb600 straight from the dvd. This is the chipset I have and it works fine. There is more than one driver floating around for this chipset and that why I'm saying try the other. Without being in front of your system I would not be able to tell you why it isnt working on your system. Is there any possibility you can save an install log for me. Not just the errors it may throw up but all logs.

while you are installing, you can view the install log via one of the menu items (not sure which one at the moment). Try to save it that way.

check your com.apple.boot.plist in Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and let me know if any boot flags (kernel flags) are set.

Have you run <a href="http://www.xbench.com/">Xbench</a> yet? Is the speed noticeable?

I am not sure why it isn't recognizing it. I know the Mac Pro can have 8 cores (two quad cores) but they are Intel Xeon. I'm just guessing that they are all working just fine but not showing. OS X doesn't always look at your BIOS to tell it what it has available... if at all.

try booting with <b>cpus=8</b> ;-) just for a laugh.

@everyone

if you have an unsucessfull install please post your install log.

I have one here infront of me and they are very revealing

@Waiflih

Why doesnt you install work???

well according to your log your have no idea at all how to install OSX this is not an attack but you should read a little on how to do it. Try the OSX86 wiki.

Your problems are
I dont beleieve you have run disk utility to prepare the hardrive or you have specifically told it to partition and format as Fat32 (i beleive this is why permissions fail)

2nd you have selected everything selectable to install every graphics card driver, every soundcard driver, every chipset driver etc.

This does not run like a windows install it is far smarter than that and you have some control.

I really appreciate the fact you sent the log. Now you have an answer and I'm not just guessing.

p.s. according to the date of log file April 1976 you need to change date in bios as this can have effects not 100% with MacOSX but I know it can effect other software

perhaps its how the drive was pepared in the first place is it a name brand system thats used some utility to prevent partition change????

If so use some drive tools form manufacturer eg seagate tools etc to wipe drive first. Then Osx should deal with it first

Hey,

Wondering if this will work or not. I am going to try it anyways.

Please look here for the output from PC Wizard, I've highlighted things to note, specifically that my chipset is an AMD 790FX, with sb600 IPX and a Marvell.
PC Wizard - Pastebin info (http://djhash.pastebin.com/f603d674)

Take a look and let me know if anything is specific I have to do than choosing the proper kernels and patches.. I am already assuming it'll be a modbin 9.4 kernel (not sure if there are others)..

Also, I'm installed Kalyway 10.5.2, and the first time I did it, there was no problem detecting my onboard sound-card:
(Device Audio : IXP SB600 High Definition Audio Controller).. its a soundmax in windows.. but later installs it would not detect it.. not sure what I changed.. i don't think i did.. anyways..

I hope this will be enough for you.

Thank you so much for your work.

Hi,
i'm new to Macs. I used my gf's macbook several times and I feel really bad that I cannot answer any of her questions in regards to OS X.
I need to change the situation :)

wondering if it's possible to make it run on my machine:

AMD Phenom 9850 BE @ 2.9Ghz
ASUS Crosshair II Formula nForce 780a
G.SKILL 2x2GB DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
XFX GeForce GTX260
HT OMEGA STRIKER 7.1
Seagate 750GB SATA (winxp here)
Samsung 40Gb SATA (free)
Samsung 250Gb PATA (free)

when I first tried to run installation DVD i had errors with firewire.
turned it off in bios.
then I had problems with USB. It said that something's not happening in 5 secs. I unplugged all usb devices, but keyboard and mouse.

and after this line:
Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0

if freezes and says:
Still waiting for root device.

i found somewhere that it's a problem with not recognizing SATA HDD. I tried running with all three, two and just one HDD. same problem.

then I found solution somewhere that I must have PATA DVD and HDD running on one cable. My DVD burner is SATA, so I borrowed one from my friend.

dvd - master, hdd - slave gave no changes.

dvd - slave, hdd - master added one more line:
Extension "com.apple.driver.iTunesPhoneDriver" has no explicit kernel dependency; using version 6.0
AppleUSBOHCI [0x6e36000]::CheckSleepCapability OHCI controller will be unloaded across sleep

and again :
Still waiting for root device.

my HDD is FAT32 with 100Gb in primary partition

any ideas?

Enable AHCI in the BIOS for your SATA drives. What southbridge does your MB use? Is it an SB600 or SB700 (like my 780G motherboards...) I have OSx86 running on 2 780G machines - 1 with a Phenom, 1 with an A64 X2.

I doubt that your video card will have anything but VESA support.

i tried with 1 HD frst (the sata one) , trying AHCI & Native IDE but still got "still waiting for root device"

then i tried with only IDE HD but still got the same error

is there any exception for DVDRW & my IDE HD on the same cable ?
or should i use my SATA HD for better performance?

yes, i've tried with -x , but still no luck.
at first i thought it was a USB error, because the last message was : "AppleUSBOHCI ... bla bla bla ... OHCI controller will be unloaded across sleep"

but then comes along "still waiting for root device"

any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks

oky. it seems that my SB700 is the problem (lawlessppc didn;t have sb700 driver i guess) but i found this sb700kext http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=126273

*edited*

okay imanaged to inject the file using TransMac .. unfortunetelly sata didn;t work for me , so i go IDE instead. voila! installer showed up. everything installs just fine .. took about 20-30 mins at least.

reboot and there;s this error Grey Circle with line (how to describe that?) on top of grey apple logo. the spinning circle keeps spinneing and nothing happens ..

using -v at boot it reintroduced me to still waiting for root device ...
eh? i thought the installer worked just fine ?
what's wrong?

Coool! with transmac, injecting sb700 chipset has never been easier, (why didn;t i look at that place first??)

anyway, progress so far with LawlessPPC:

SB700 ok, Processors recognized dual core, HD ide recognized, DVD rom recognized, USB full speed

--
9600GSO still working as software no QE no CE, SATA HD not recognized

but i will look for more! thanks !

not quite sure i understand your post but if you have sb600 acording to your specs then it is supported. What i can say is alot of errors are due to bios settings. Try booting with -v -f -x

please explain what you are modifying the root for via -s right after the installation... is this to bypass the account creation loop? if it is, make sure you are doing this process correctly... state your procedures (exactly) here and we can help you better...

for the second paragraph... if it hangs, tell us what it hangs at... it isn't much help if we can't see what you see.

I have 3 HDD's and I use 60GB PATA(ide) for Mac. I already updated my BIOS to 1.7 version which is most recent update for K9A2 CF. my LawlessPPC distro install efforts' steps are below.

In BIOS I've set SATA features disabled
Enabled SATA and RAID mode on/off
Removed SATA HDDs
Disabled all integrated perihephals
While installing, I choose none of graphics cards/ HD 38x0 / HD 3800 support
In safe mod i installed graphics package
with osx86 tools tried to enable QE/CI

none of these attemps didn't work.

still after apple logo there is a funny commadore 64 graphics and couldn't make LAN work.

Also my CPU's power consumption is appear to 89 watts according to AMD's web site. But I found that Triple Core 8450 model is 65 watts. maybe I could change my CPU. Will it be ok with Leopard?

I hope you can help me with those information above.

Thank you for your time and nice work.

First of all thanks to Lawless, his distro was third I've tried and it worked.

Edit : Problem solved, with capping maxmem

Though there is 1 issue I wanted to ask if U ppl might know. When starting Transmission it checks my old transfers, but after couple mins PC freezes asking to reboot. Same problem when I try to patch Mac combo 10.5.5 update, and happened today transferring pictures from digital camera.
Other than that works flawlessly. Thanks in advance.

when installing for the first time I would recommend using the boot flags "-f -x -v". By default, LawlessPPC's distro runs with "-f -v" but if you override it with your own, it won't force-load the Extensions folder and may not find the right extensions needed. You may also need to inject an extension later so I'd suggest reading up on it from within a few threads that can be found on this forum or over at insanelymac.

when i wroe about the wattage i meant just on that msi board (they are crap). As for waiting for rot device there is no chipset driver present for motherboard you would have to add it yourself. Your choices would be to get the sb700 kext i think that will do it or if im not mistaken idenebs distro covers it but i cant confirm

Hello LawlessPPC,

firstly sorry for my english. i´m from germany.

i installed your LawlessPPC 10.5.4 on my system and it works great. but give it a way to update your distro from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5. That is very important for me, to install the GF 9600GT driver.

I used the Zephiroth software update, but it won´t work. it stops with detecting cpuids for mac os x leopard.

basically you can download the single update direct from the Apple site and place the .pkg file found in the image download to your Downloads folder and then follow the directions at the link.

If you have trouble with that, PM me and I'll send you a link to mine.

Is it correct thread, because i don't see how it relates to fix that particular problem.

I'm having troubles aswell, it was mentioned earlier that updating from 10.5.4 to 10.5.5 it stops on detecting cpus (to be precise on 310th file with AMD Patcher 0.3), same goes to new AMD Patcher 0.3. Even better my ASU 0.5beta now downloads and strait after goes back to update list.

I would like to have that pathed version too, please.

yes its the correct thread if you are unable to get your system updated to 10.5.5.

If you are trying to get it updated to 10.5.5 for Graphics updates that are not given in the online updates but only through the retail DVDs that became available after that system started to be used in the new Macbooks/Pros then thats another problem altogether.

read through the voodoo kernel threads, find the 9.5 System.kext file (replace existing one in Extensions folder with this) then use the new voodoo kernel release candidate and then update via Apple Software update. This should solve it for you.

I know the commands for to override the setup process however I would like to find out why the setup is hanging at "don't transfer files" page at setup. Any ideas?

Now I have searched and a few "fixes" for the issue, but neither seem to have worked.
1st was to set the Wake on lan to enabled ( in XP ). ( have done )
2nd was to enable magic packet in bios. ( enabled )

The network card is the onboard Nvidia gigabit lan.

Anyone have any other fixes for this issue perhaps?

1 x 500 GB WD - USB external
DVD : ASUS DVD RW - IDE

I tried without success to install :

* iDeneb v1.3 osx86 10.5.5 - installed but after first reboot , gived me errors like : Still waiting for the root device , continously loop restarting , end every errors depending on my bios modifications .
* Kalyway_10.5.2_DVD_Intel_Amd , but when booting from the DVD keep restarting at the Darwin boot after like 2-3 sec .

After 48 hours for not sleeping i have downloaded your DVD image burn it and installed .
GREAT WORK MAN ! It works. Indeed my CREATIVE X-FI Extreme Audio dont have the drivers but i will find them . And the second problem is the network card . If i use nForce network is not working the internet but after i puted the cable into a REALTEK network card it's just begin to work !

2. what kernel would you recommand for my computer , Vanilla ?

definitely not. you are using an AMD Phenom CPU so Voodoo would be the best bet right now.

Hello !

I'm quite new to osx86 installation but not in computing, and I've tested over 10 ditros so far. None worked, always because of lack of SB600 support.

Now, I've figured out how to install LawlessPPC, and everything worked fine. But, after installation, when my computer restarts, OS X does not start :( So I've tried to start with "-f -v" and even "-x" commands but this isn't better. Without verbose, I've got a pretty Mac screen asking me to reboot my computer. With verbose, here is where it hangs :
kextd[10]:IOKitWaitQuiet: timed out waiting to write kernel symbols

Some precisions :
- During installation, I've chosen to install Via/SB drivers, ALC888 drivers, All Nvidia drivers and All Network drivers
- this is not a "still waiting for root device" problem
- OS X is installed in an HFS+ partition of my hard drive

My config :
- Phenom 9550
- MSI K9A2CF-F with SB600
- 2 GB RAM PC2-8500
- SATA Hard drive
- Nvidia 9600 GT

Any help would be great :)

Ok let's forget my previous post.
Finally, I've reinstalled the distro without any nvidia drivers and it worked, I can now boot and use it. I've installed other nvidia drivers for my 9600 GT.

@Jib
Are you still using Lawless? A lot of people are having problems with sb600 and I know Lawless works but If you used a different one Id like to add it to the list.

Yes I'm using the original ditribution from LawlessPPC.
First, it was impossible to install it on my config, but I've figured out that my DVD was corrupted (or not perfect). So I've burn it again but not at max speed, and then install worked perfectly for me (even though first time I forgot to customize installation, so it was not working !).

I've chosen to check only those options :
- Via, SB drivers
- ALC888 drivers

At first reboot, everything worked fine : sound, ethernet, drives... No "still waiting for root device" bug at all ! After that, I've installed drivers for my graphic card : I've found a complete driver set for my Geforce 9600 GT (Kext was installed thanks to Kext helper). Then I've installed some apps (iTunes, Quicktime update etc...) and my printer.

Now, I would like to update to 10.5.6 but I'm not sure it's possible ?! (I know that Apple updater shouldn't be used !).
