Hey Guys,
I am currently downloading just about every version of OSX86 that I can find in *hopes* of finding a version that will run on my home server.
I am pretty sure that I won't find a version that works, but I would like some input/information if anyone has it. Here is my server setup:
Dual Xeon 2.8Ghz 800Mhz FSB LV 2MB
Super Micro X6DHE-XG2 Motherboard
4GB DDR2 400Mhz ECC/REG Memory
Single 80GB SATA Drive (For now, would like to run multiple raids, but we will cross that bridge at a later time)
So far, Jas 10.4.x and 10.5.4 are a no-go. I am going to try out Leo4All and iDeneb tonight. Any that I have missed? Any versions you might recommend for the older chipset that my board has?
My first concern is, I am using the integrated ATI Rage 8MB Integrated graphics. Going to be a problem? Anyone else have this running on a comparable server board? Any information would be great!
Thanks in advance!

Hi and welcome to Infinitemac,
IMHO your configuration could be a great os-x server or even better workstation box. I would rather use it as a workstation/desktop machine as it would be a waste to launch a server on it and just forget about it. Of course, it will do its job flawlessly but the same kind of job can do much cheaper machine not any worse than yours can do. On the other hand no other can be as powerful workstation as this dual xeon can be. Just an opinion, what i would do if i was you.
Whats the problem at the installation, can you boot with -v and paste where it is stucked at. (not JaS, the other 10.5.4 distro you didn't mention what it was) ?
Try to setup your sata hdd in sata->ahci mode in bios first. I would also use sata dvd. (i am not sure about your ide controller). If you tried booting the installation dvd with IDE dvd, and you didn't reach the installer window, your ide controller could be a problem (i am not sure which one it is at this point). Try with sata dvd, you have two sata ports, one for hdd and the other you can use for dvd.
I would try with kalyway, at least 10.5.1 or any newer distro if possible. Imho your config is capable of running vanilla, unmodified kernel. Your sata controller is ICH5 which is not originally supported but it will work with just a fake plist. I think you would have problem with that integrated graphics. You can install any cheaper nvidia or ati, 7300Gt is a good recommendation. After first successfull initial install I would try with retail OSX, but that could be next step.
Hope it was helpful.

Hey milanca,
Thanks for the post. I have actually reached full installs but unable to actually "load" either Tiger or Leopard versions. The JaS version I installed boots with darwin and literally 1 second later, my system reboots. I did run a -v and I see about 3 lines of text then reboot. The tiger version I have locks up at white apple loading screen.
Typing this now, I am using a Kalyway 10.5.5 on my home system and it is running flawlessly (other than my video graphics, but it seems stable, that is what is important. I will figure out the video later) so now my next step it to start install on my server and see where it goes.
Thanks for the info and I will update this shortly with my results.
Thanks and any other info would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Guys,
Hope this isn't taboo to post this, but I got my GFX card working via this post:

Edit: You can skip the NVinstaller and Kext downloads/installs. Just worked on another system!

I'm glad you sorted it all out. Regarding Xeon config, as i told you, its a great machine for running osx.
Nice, so you installed your graphics. Did you just install nvinject or entire pack (drivers and everything from this link) ? This package seems a bit obsolete (2007) and it might have overwritten your newer nvidia drivers.

I just did the Nvidia Graphics installer and then uninstalled them..and then my video card finally worked w/ quartz, etc..
Skipped the nvinject and nv kext.
