I think I am missing something. Ive used this tool about a year ago on a PPC with good results. Using it with my Leopard install has been less successful.
I must have missed the part on the site/manual where it says the actual limit to file size. I mean I understand 128x128 or less & less than 100 colors but I have made even the most rudimentary images and a dozen formats some as small as 1k and still it will not allow me to use them.
I have used Photoshop's Save for Web function and reduced the colors adjusted quality. I really don't mind changing the image but I wish I had a file size to shoot for.

As far as i know it modifies boot.efi which we dont use, so pretty useless on non-macs.

edit: oops, i missed this is a general Apple sub-forum :)

Chameleon (http://chameleon.osx86.hu/) lets you change the boot logo and background. Not only that, but you can use 24bit (transparent) PNG files too.

Edit the pictures in /Extra/Themes/Default (or whatever theme you specified in com.apple.Boot.plist if you use that method).
