Yeah, I expected it to appear any day, or any hour now. Just checked a couple of hours ago. It's here, installing ... we'll see soon how it goes.

I'm currently installing onto my MacBook Pro, though, I'm not quite brave enough to install onto my Hack just right now. I'll leave you guys to be the guinea pigs for the moment ;)

The update went all good for me, but i'm having lag with mouse and moving windows, it seems that everything is hanging after a couple seconds?

Anyone experiencing the same problems?

I wasn't sure if the comment was directed at me so I thought I would chime back... I am currently installing the update myself right now... (waiting to restart) so I'll come back to report the success in a minute.

I've had my system ready since the v6.1 came out for the modified boot-132 munky created. I was simply asking P-J about his system to help find out why its so jumpy.

that wasn't pointed at you it was just people need to really follow the guide or they can break their system because stuff has changed in 10.5.6 you just can't update you need things to update and some people don't know that yet

You dont have any problems with lag?
Because im thinking its the hdd kext because also with a EFI string im having the same problem.
But only when heavy disk usage...

And since we got the same pc...

just two questions...

1)May i use pcwiz's Universal OSx86 Installer in order to install pcefi v9 and DSDT Patcher GUI to install dstd patch? that's enough to install upgrade?

2)what about kernel? is there a new one inside the 10.5.6?
Zephyrot's ASU is it still working for kernel's upgrade blocking?

Thanks 2 all

Great, just in time for Christmas...:p
ASU spit back at me while patching the 10.5.6 installer. Is such patching needed or can I go unpatched with this one?

EDIT: I also can't get Rapidshare to work right so I can't download PC_EFI V9...heeeeelp! Pretty please? :(

well I'm using the old nForce Test kext because I disliked the way the new one (that supports RAM > 4GB) handles my SATA DVD-RW. You're probably on to something though... but as I don't use the new one I can't say for sure.

Is there a guide on installing Chameleon? How do I do this?

Do I already have to have Chameleon installed before using this:

Or will that install Chameleon?

I'm on an AMD w/ Voodoo 9.5 Kernel and I am posting from 10.5.6. I downloaded and installed the Universal OSX86 Installer (http://ihackintosh.blogspot.com/2008/12/how-to-use-universal-osx86-installer.html) and selected Install PC_EFI v9. After that, I downloaded and used the DSDT Patcher GUI (http://pcwizcomputer.com/downloads/DSDTPatcherGUI_1.0.zip) and selected all the options. After that, I backed up some kexts and data to be safe and then got the 10.5.6 Update from Software Update (not the ASU; I got an error every time I tried).

After restart, it booted! I had to replace AppleSMBIOS.kext with my old kext because About This Mac would force a logout, but that all I needed to do to get 10.5.6 working for me :)

updated AMD machine(followed netkas instructions). Everything seems to be ok. Except for there's no info in hardware section and "About this mac" shows Core 2 Duo @ 3.7 Ghz. Is this because of new AppleSMBIOS.kext? Can anyone PM me old one from 10.5.5?

Thanks!

I installed 10.5.4 retail with boot-132 and I wanted to use the EFI partition way, but somehow it won't boot. I'm still using the boot132 CD and booting fine in a completely vanilla install. I did the 10.5.6 update without modifying anything and everything is ok. Booted fine from the first time and is running strong. Only if I could boot with the EFI partition and not the CD would be great.

biird, you deserve some holiday cookies for that post. I'd been burned trying to install 10.5.6 the first time and had to format and reinstall from 10.5.2.
From there, I downloaded the combo update and along with biird's explanation and AMD Patcher 0.31 got updated to 10.5.6.
I didn't have any SMBIOS troubles, but my USB keyboard's not working at the Darwin prompt. No biggie. I also had to replace seatbelt.kext and System.kext to get disk image mounting and Time Machine going again.

My hackbook(Acer Aspire 5100, turion 64 x2 tl-56) is now up and running in 10.5.6

There was one kext which gave me kernel panic... it took a while before I realized which kext it was, but it was an old kext which I didnīt need, after I removed that one the system started.
Then it was just to fix qe+ci & audio.

And Chunnans pccard solution is not working for me anymore, I guess I just need to modify some numbers of the plist in the kext, will look at that later.

Now I just hope the Voodoo team will continue working with the kernel, and release a 10.5.6 in a few weeks...

If somebody has the window lag problem when using iTunes + Quicktime, it can be fixed by restoring the 10.5.5 video kext's.

If you need them, please don't hesitate to send me a private message (http://www.infinitemac.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=101).

My preparation to 10.5.6 was unsuccessful. I have an AMD PC with Zephyroth Leopard 10.5.2 (initial) and GUID boot loader from same installation disk. Over time I've updated PC successfully with updates patched by bhast2 to 10.5.5 (Kernel 10.5.4) It is a perfectly working system. Today I've tried to prepare PC for 10.5.6 installation using biird way (comment 22) and it resulted in booting problem:

boot0: GPT
boot0: HFS+
boot0: booting
boot0: done
HFS+ partition error

No booting. Differently from biird I didn't have woodoo kernel. Is it necessary? Surely I've missed the development of OSx86 regarding new ways of booting. Is there resources for problem like mine? Or maybe there will be patched version of 10.5.6 or won't be anymore patched updates?

P.S. I'm doing initial updates to a testing version of Leo on different partition which is however is on the same disk as my working Leo.

Try booting with the installation disc ...

What you do is boot from the disc BUT instead of pressing F8 when prompted, just leave it and let it countdown and if all goes well you will boot into your Leopard installation ...

You can then download Chameleon and install it to fix your boot problem ...

NB: if you have osx86 tools, you can use that too ...

nfoav8or
12-18-2008, 07:43 AM
every update is (in some ways) worth it. If you are affected by the list of fixes from 10.5.5 then you should... otherwise it isn't as necessary. But it isn't that difficult to do. If you've got a little knowledge about your system and have tinkered with OS X AND read the forum posts lately about it then it won't hurt you to update.

It is normal for sound and video to not be fully supported right after an update since Apple may introduce new kexts that replace the ones modified by the hackintosh user in the past. Just make sure you save all the "special" kexts that you needed in order to get your system working to where it is now. Then you won't have a problem when you reboot back in and have to fix them.

I tried the EFIStudio string install but the machien gives me a blank screen (mouse freezes). Removed it using single user from com.apple.Boot.plist file and it loads fine though no nVidia driver installed. Tried the old NVinject.kext and the NVdarwin.kext but doesn't work as well.

Me too started from a Zeph's 10.5.2, partitioned an HD in GUID and then upgraded always with Zeph's ASU.
All went always fine, my pc is triple booting in XP (default), Vista32 and Leopard with the easybcd bootloader 1.72.
Never tried other booting methods 'cause all was perfect until this 10.5.6 update...
XP and Vista are on a physical HD, Leo is on another HD partitioned in 3 partition:
Leopard (system), Programs and Archive (in GUID).
I use to make image backups with disk Utility from installation dvd disk and when i have problems i restore hd image from DiskUtility so no problem for return back to a functional system.
I tried to upgrade to 10.5.6 with pcwiz utilities, installing PCEfi v9 and DSTD patch.. no errors, but on reboot i had a boot0 error..
I can even try with XP bootloader, cause i'm reinstalling Xp without Vista, and at the moment my 10.5.5 work perfectly with it.
Way out?

EDIT 1: Well, i just found a big problem: my usb stick is no longer detected. worked great in 10.5.5. anyone has any ideas of what to do about it?

EDIT 2: ok, i found out how to get it to see the usb stick: i have to delete the extensions cache: sudo rm -R /system/library/extensions/caches

Install System.kext v9.5.0 as it must be the same version as kernel.
Be noted that System.kext 9.5.0 is included in Voodoo kernel package.

hey bud... by version specific I meant i.e. NVinject 0.2.1... most of the time different versions give different support.

Also, knowing what graphics card you have helps out a bunch. Edit your signature to reflect your system specs and it will save lots of questions later on.

In the past, I used the Zephyroth NVidia Universal Installer (which basically uses NVinject 0.2.1 but it also includes a lot of other packages... regardless, all i ever installed up until 10.5.3 was this NVinject. The thing to watch out for with this is that all the other GeForce and NVDA* graphics kexts in the Extensions folder were removed. Then repair permissions and reboot and it should load just fine.

Now I'm using EFI and the retail graphics update through 10.5.5 and up and the NVDA kext "NVDANV40Hal.kext" and EFI string work together to give me CI/QE and full resolution support.

EDIT: you're hex string should be: 6c0200000100000001000000600200000d00000002010c00d0 41030a010000000101060000090101060000007fff04000e00 00004e00560050004d00000020000000010000000000000000 00000000000000000000000000000000000000220000005600 520041004d002c0074006f00740061006c00730069007a0065 00000008000000000000101c00000064006500760069006300 65005f00740079007000650000000f0000004e5644412c5061 72656e740e0000006e0061006d00650000000b000000646973 706c617922000000400030002c006400650076006900630065 005f00740079007000650000000b000000646973706c617922 000000400031002c006400650076006900630065005f007400 79007000650000000b000000646973706c6179100000006d00 6f00640065006c0000001a0000006e5669646961204765466f 726365203733303020475320000000400031002c0063006f00 6d00700061007400690062006c00650000000e0000004e5644 412c4e564d616314000000400030002c006e0061006d006500 0000120000004e5644412c446973706c61792d411400000040 0031002c006e0061006d0065000000120000004e5644412c44 6973706c61792d4220000000400030002c0063006f006d0070 0061007400690062006c00650000000e0000004e5644412c4e 564d6163100000004e00560043004100500000001800000004 000000000003000c00000000000007000000001e0000007200 6f006d002d007200650076006900730069006f006e0000002e 0000006e5669646961204765466f7263652037333030204753 204f70656e474c20456e67696e65205b4546495d
I obtained this with OSx86 Tools Utility. If you need help implementing this, let me know... but you said you already used it so you should be fine. Also, (if you haven't re-updated to 10.5.5 or above) when you boot up... boot up in single user mode (-s) and remove all your other video kext fixes using the commands:
/sbin/mount -uw /
cd /System/Library/Extensions/
rm -Rf GeForce*
rm -Rf NVDA*
rm -Rf NVinject*
rm -Rf ATI*
cd ..
chmod -R 755 Extensions/ && chown -R root:wheel Extensions/
rm -Rf Extensions.mkext
reboot

Now upgrade your graphics... if you find that the graphics update was already installed and you just erased it, PM me and I'll send you the files.

EDIT: when you copy the hex code, don't worry about the apparent spaces that show in the quote... they don't show up using nano or TextEdit or BBEdit.

not a prob... it looks like we've got virtually the same graphics card. Take a look at the reply I sent above... also, just change the hex code to fit your card and it should work.

Thanks. Here's what I did:

1. Installed PC_EFI v9 Chameleon on my 10.5.5 HDD using UInstaller 1.2
2. Patched DSDT using DSDT Patcher (Selected all options)
3. Installed 10.5.6 update from Apple site, patched with AMD Patcher .31
4. Rebooted to single user, and followed your instructions (removed all graphics kext etc)
5. Installed Apple's Graphics Update to replace removed kexts.
6. Used OSX86Tools to get hex code of my Graphics card (nVidia Geforce 7300GT 256mb)
7. Inserted the hex code manually in com.apple.Boot.plist string
8. Rebooted.
9. Worked fine, but then I get a kernel panic when I check on Graphics/Display on System Profiler:
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/423/img1205mu6.th.jpg (http://img301.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1205mu6.jpg)

From what I can understand, it has something to do with the com.apple.iokit.IOGraphicsFamily.

I hope that's detailed enough for you to help me out with this one.

Thanks again and hopeto hear a solution soon.

it doesn't necessarily mean that the KP happened because of something wrong in that kext... just that something in your system didn't match up when that kext was accessed during the System Profile execution.

what does your Boot.plist file look like?

Chameleon Bootloader 1.0.11 (is there a newer version of it out there? Couldn't find nothing :( )
Voodoo 9.5.0
GA-MA78GM-S2H rev v1.1

Two problems only:
Firewire only works if HD is pluged in at boot
USB2 didn't work

To both you and demigod -

do you still have the problem if you remove the hex code? double-check the hex code to make sure it is correct as well.

also, demigod, is the running kernel named mach_kernel or mach_kernel.voodoo? Fusion doesn't work with a kernel other than one named mach_kernel... check the voodoo documentation for more info on this.

You should rename you're mach_kernel.voodoo back to mach_kernel to get vmware working...
Place the other mach_kernel in a safe location :)

VMware (OS X) does not run when running on Voodoo kernel.
VMware requires the running kernel to be named /mach_kernel. This is a known
bug in VMware. Either install your Voodoo kernel as /mach_kernel (not
recommended), or remove /mach_kernel and create a symbolink link in its place
(alias) which points to Voodoo kernel (/mach_kernel.voodoo). If you used the
automatic installer, this has been done for you. If you installed the kernel manually,
refer to the Insta$ing the Kernel section for more details.

Double-checked the hex code like you said, and as fas as I can tell, its the same from the EFIStudio installer as well as the UInstaller.

If I remove the hex code from the Boot.plist, my boot hangs at around this point:
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/3379/img1576vp3.th.jpg (http://img267.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img1576vp3.jpg)

I don't see any indication of a kernel panic, and I've let it hang for about 2 hours with no change.

For me to boot properly, I had to remove all the graphics kext again and reinstall the Apple Graphics Update and the Hex code using EFIStudio.

Hi i followed the above example with the Voodoo kernel in place .... using Apple update .. i am than prompted to restart to complete update to 10.5.6 ...then the screen changes to the default empty desktop (the one you get after a fresh install) even through i have changed the desktop image, then it just hangs until i power the thing off manually ... this now happens any time i try to log out and power down...

after forced power down everything boots up fine again...

anyone have any pointers....

so you weren't using the updated graphics already? or had you just deleted the files from before?

My card only requires me to use the NVDANV40Hal.kext (from the update) and the hex string. But it doesn't hurt to keep the rest as you should get full support now.

The above shot you posted just shows that the system is hanging on the graphics as it isn't sure which to use.

And, am I reading this right, you got it working now? awesome.

I've used the Graphics Update from Apple already (as per your advice), that's why I got my graphics card working and solved my original 10.5.6 update problem (http://www.infinitemac.com/f36/10-5-6-released-t1743/post19853.html). But the kernel panic in the System Profiler still happens.

do you still have the problem if you remove the hex code? double-check the hex code to make sure it is correct as well.

I did what you said, to remove the Hex code only, to see if the problem goes away with the Kernel panic, but my system just hangs like what you saw from my previous post. I had to remove all the updated graphic kexts again in order to boot back to the GUI and reinstall the updated NVDA* again and restore the Hex code to the Boot.plist, but again have the same System Profiler kernel panic whenever I click on Graphics/Display.

So problem still not solved.

look in /System/Library/SystemProfiler/ and then compare that to: http://nfoav8or.infinitemac.com/SystemProfiler.png

any differences?

There's an extra file located in my /System/Library/SystemProfiler folder called SPiPlatformReporter.spreporter.

http://img355.imageshack.us/img355/4489/picture2sk3.th.png (http://img355.imageshack.us/my.php?image=picture2sk3.png)

That's the only difference file-wise.

and when you run spdisplaysreporter you get a KP as well? (they both point to the same thing... System profiler uses this to gather the info...

hmm. Let me do a little more digging. I'll be back to edit later.

I've wrote earlier about my unsuccessful preparation for 10.5.6 installation. I've tried once more :) So what I've actually did is installed Woodoo Kernel, downloaded 10.5.6 pkg from apple site and installed it. That's it. My system prior installation: http://www.infinitemac.com/f36/10-5-6-released-t1743/post19482.html

The Leopard seems to fly with 10.5.6, really faster. However only for a while. After shutting down the computer or after certain reboot (I don't know really what triggers it) I don't have internet connection (even so ethernet connection is "connected") and computer is very slow (operations and onscreen visual changes) Anyone knows what could be the problem? Now I've reinstalled 10.5.6 on top of existing 10.5.6 and everything is ok as before, but for how long... I've noticed this problem also on my testing partition.

It is said that Voodoo kernel disables appleintelcpumanagement kext and don't steal mac kexts. However I see them in my extensions folder. Could this trigger the problem?

I also see a message in system profiler (more info) where general info about computer is retrieved "there was an error retrieving info..." or something. But this doesn't bother me if not related to the problem described above.

Any ideas?

Well, I have Zephyroth Leopard (it was 10.5.2 then) with GUID boot loader from his CD. I've never installed any other boot loaders. Just installed Voodoo Kernel on my 10.5.5 and then downloaded 10.5.6 from Apple website (as separate dmg) and installed it. That's it.

So basically I only needed to install Voodoo kernel. System works well when I boot with "-v"

I wanted to bump this one up, as I've had no luck still on updating my system to 10.5.6. Want to try out the new iLife '09. :)

Yes, spdisplaysreporter gets a KP as well. :)

After nfoav8or asked me if running SPDisplaysReporter.spreporter causes a KP (and it did), I replaced with the old 10.5.5 version 104 (10.5.6 has version 116), and that stopped the kernel panic.

Here's my new dilemma. DMG files won't mount and causes KPs, and my USB drives won't mount. Tried using the 10.5.5 seatbelt.kext method with no success (build 14 as opposed to the new 10.5.6 seatbelt.kext build), and I'm using the same 9.5.0 System.kext in accordance with the Voodoo Kernel 9.5.0 I'm using. My iPod and flash drives that uses USB ports won't mount, tried using the old IOUSBFamily.kext and IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext from 10.5.5. Still no luck.

Any help to point me in the right direction is greatly appreciated.

Well, I got frustrated on figuring out how to upgrade to 10.5.6, I decided to use PCWiz's iPC OSX86 Final ISO to install fresh. I use all the patches available, and used the Migration Assistant to transfer all my files and applications from the old HDD to the new HDD.

As of now, its working fine, all issues beforehand have been addressed (USB, DMG panics, video issues etc.). Here's hoping it is.

Thanks to everyone who helped.

I have tried to get iPC 10.5.6 running on my system i can install it but it won't boot after install. I get the infamous error "Still waiting on root device"

My hardware is
Motherboard - GA-MA790x-DS4
CPU - AMD Athlon X2 6400+
Video Card - Nvidia 8800GT 512MB by eVGA
HDD - 1 IDE 30GB
DVD - IDE dual layer burner

I install it using the voodoo kernal 9.5.0, along with the chipset driver for Via/Sis?Marvel/SB.
Thats all, it installs fine but wont boot afterwards. Any help is appreciated.
