I just updated my machine from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 and it installed fine or so I thought. When I boot up I get the apple screen and the a kernel panic. It goes no further please help me get my machine back up and running.

what is reported as the problem for the panic?

A few thoughts:
Are you still using the kernel named mach_kernel.voodoo or mach_kernel? The new 9.6.0 mah_kernel from apple was now installed over the top of the old voodoo one so make sure you use the boot flag "mach_kernel.voodoo" to boot up.

or boot up using: -s mach_kernel.voodoo and run the following to restore the old voodoo kernel to mach_kernel
/sbin/mount -uw /
cp /mach_kernel.voodoo /mach_kernel
This will fix any issues with VMWare Fusion not running (if you use it) as it requires the running kernel to be named "mach_kernel"

if it is a video kext Kernel Panic, simply boot up using the above method and remove the bad kexts (within reason of course)... Let us know what the panics are caused by before you do this/

When I boot with the boot flag -s it gives me the kernel panic before I could type in mach_kernel...

use the boot flag "-s mach_kernel.voodoo" so you specify the correct kernel before attempting to correct this. Then fix the mach_kernel issue and reboot.

It won't let me correct the mach_kernel because when I boot using what you told me -s mach_kernel.voodoo I get a kernel panic

do you have a spare flash drive you could place the voodoo kernel on? or do you know where else you may have it backed up to? boot up with the install DVD then copy it from your flash drive or backup location to your root directory on your HD by using the Terminal.

Hey so I am having this same problem and I was wondering how to do the terminal copy of voodoo and if it is version 9.6.0 that I need to have on the thumb drive
