THIS IS A LIVEDVD! IT WILL ALLOW YOU TO USE AND TEST OS X BEFORE INSTALLING!!

This latest iPC OSx86 10.5.6 Dual Layer ISO combines the simplicity and variety of the iPC OSx86 Universal 10.5.6 V1.1 Installer + a fully functional LiveDVD system into one dual booting disc.

* This release requires a dual layer DVD-R. It can also be written to partition/USB drive if necessary *

* YOU NEED A MINIMUM OF 1.1GB RAM TO BOOT THE LIVE PART OF THE DISC *

* THE OS X SERVER OPTION ON THE DISC REQUIRES A VALID OS X SERVER SERIAL & LICENSE *

* As a result of compressed DMG, installing OS X might be slower than with the original iPC 10.5.6 Universal ISO Single Layer *

==How To Boot Installer==

To boot the installer just boot the disc as you normally would and it will go right into the Installer. Make sure to read the pop up installation notes before installing!!

== How to Boot LiveDVD ==

To boot the LiveDVD, boot from the iPC Disc, except this time press F8 while booting the disc to get to the Boot Menu. Type in:

config=live.plist

And press Enter to start the LiveDVD Boot. Eventually you will get to the root prompt like this:

:/ root#:

Type in the line "bootlive; exit" (without quotes) like this:

:/ root#: bootlive; exit

And press Enter to start loading the LiveDVD. Now a prompt will come up asking you to specify the RAMDisk Size. A bigger RAMDisk means more room to use the LiveDVD with, but it uses more RAM. The RAMDisk size cannot exceed your physical RAM size. To use the default 1GB RAMDisk size just leave it blank and press Enter. If you want to specify your own RAMDisk size, it must be specified in 512 byte blocks. To calculate this, say I want a RAMDisk 2048MB in size:

(2048 x 512) / 1000000

Basically the formula is (A x 512) / 1000000 where A is the RAMDisk size in megabytes (A multiplied by 512 divided by 1000000).

If everything goes well you will be greeted with the Mac OS X desktop. Where you can use and test Mac OS X in its fullest. If you go to the Applications folder you see the default OS X apps but go into the "iPC_OSx86_Live_Apps" folder inside the Applications folder and a number of applications have been included:

* AppleHDAPatcher
* Boomerang Data Recovery
* Carbon Copy Cloner
* Clone X 3 (Demo)
* Clonetool H1
* CPU-X
* DSDT Patcher GUI
* EFIStudio
* iDefrag (Demo)
* iPartition (Demo)
* Kext Helper b7
* Marvin's AMD Utility
* MKextTool
* MSR Tools
* NVCAP Maker 1.4
* OSx86 Tools
* Pacifist
* PPF-O-Matic
* Seashore
* TextMate (Demo)
* UInstaller (Universal OSx86 Installer)
* Zephyroth Utilities -- includes:
- About this Mac Modifier
- AMD Patcher
- AMD Software Update

If you want to run your own apps that are not on the DVD then just put them on a USB stick and plug it in :) Since the iPC LiveDVD relies on the RAMDisk for proper usage, if you check the untitled volume on the desktop you can see how much free space the RAMDisk has left. If you keep running out of free space then increasing the RAMDisk size is recommended if possible.

If you are having issues, try logging out and back in. The root user and pass are ipclive for both. To log in as User1 (admin) in loginwindow just select User1 and use "ipclive" (without quotes) as password, to log in as root choose "Other" from loginwindow and use "root" as username and "ipclive" as password (both without quotes)

Default auto login account is the root account. To log into root choose "Other" at the login window, type in "root" as username and "ipclive" as password. An alternate admin account is also available (you can see it in the login window as "user1") and the password is also "ipclive"

== Kernel Boot Options ==

This LiveDVD takes advantage of prelinked kernels, combining a kernel and a kext cache together to save loading time. All prelinked kernels on the disc are based on the Voodoo 9.5.0 kernel. Default kernel:

mach_kernel: [prelinked] Default extensions set, vanilla AppleSMBIOS, based on Voodoo 9.5.0

The difference between the prelinked kernels on the disc is all to do with AppleSMBIOS. Some AppleSMBIOS work fine on some systems while they don't on others. Here are some of the prelinked kernel options available (type the name of the kernel at the boot: prompt to use it e.g. "boot_toh")

boot_smbios28: [prelinked] Uses AppleSMBIOS-28

boot_smbiosefi: [prelinked] Uses AppleSMBIOSEFI w/ vanilla AppleSMBIOS (Note: this prelinked kernel has a tendency not to work, worth a try)

boot_toh: [prelinked] Uses the old ToH AppleSMBIOS, use this if you have About this Mac crash issues

Note: Switching between these prelinked kernels is only useful if you are using the LiveDVD, these have virtually no effect on the installer

OTHER (NON PRELINKED) KERNELS

vanilla: unmodified 9.5.0 kernel

no_prelink: unmodified 9.5.0 Voodoo kernel

==============================

To install iPC directly from another booted OS X install, just mount the iPC Live ISO. Then mount the "installer.dmg" file by double clicking on it. Then open "Install Mac OS X.app" to start the installation.

iPC OSx86 Install Disc is not responsible for any damage that may occur as a result of using this software!!!!

Pcwiz, does it include any changes from your beta release except new drivers etc. ? Cause your beta with ppf2 is running very well with everything from hardware supported etc, on my machine. so i dont know if there`s a need for me to change.

The installer side only has Leopard Server Package added on, otherwise it's exactly the same as iPC v1.1.

I agree, but that will take a lot of programming, I believe everybody is waiting for the new Chameleon to see what that can do!?

First let me say thanks for making a really solid distro. Would it be possible to make a ppf patch for the the DL using the single layer as a source? I'd love to try it out and having a live dvd for rescue purposes would be great, but my internet connection is really slow.

I pay close to $70 a month and never get speeds higher than 150K/sec. My ISP are total bit torrent fascists. According to them "it totally trashes their network" :rolleyes:

They take traffic shaping to a whole new level. At one point they actually capped my bandwidth at 1/2 what I was paying for! It always seemed slow. Especially since my last house had 12mbps cable :cool:

I have all my bills on auto pay so it took me like 4 months to realize what they were doing. They never tried to contact me about it. I never got a refund and no justification for what they'd done, besides "It really messes up our network." what a load of BS ...

:-| Worst part is I can't get cable internet, dsl,or even 3G broadband where I live so I'm stuck with this crappy WISP or (shudder) i go back to dial up..... I can't wait to move.

But I digress. Would patching the single layer DVD be possible in an effective way? . Cutting the size of the download for the live dual layer would be really great?

So far iPC is my favorite distro(Y). It's very thorough and well organized It had nearly everything to get my Inspiron 1525 up and running and what it didn't have was trivial to install.

Thanks Again

There will be no PPF patches for the DL distro and we wont be releasing the DL version of the Install DVD on it's own.

Hello!

I bought a Verbatim DVD+R DL today and when i click burn disc in any burning program, it gives me an error. Some say write protected etc.

Umm, a write-protected blank dvd seems a little strange. Maybe the disc is broken or something ? U sure that your rewriter can burn DL discs ?

The Dual-Layer image works best on an 8 GB USB Stick - an installation is finished in less than 10 minutes. But there are a lot of things to fix. I found the most things, but I still search a solution for the System Profiler problem.

A LiveDVD and installer in one ISO? Now that's gotta be the best thing since sliced bread or Leopard distros. :p
Thanks, pcwiz.

Hello!

I bought a Verbatim DVD+R DL today and when i click burn disc in any burning program, it gives me an error. Some say write protected etc.

At the begin ,the instruction ask a " DVD -R" instead a "DVD +R" .

Could be this the trick? I got an error with the Leopard burner on GSA-h55N with a DVD +R too.

Should work on IDE aswell. It`s all case of kexts, but i think it`s SATA which sometimes doesnt work - think IDE mainly works.

Hey guys today I downloaded iPC X-DL 10.5.6 and burned it to a DL DVD+R. When I tried booting it all went well till i got to the part where you enter bootlive;exit. After pressing enter when it asked me for the RAMdisk size it errors out on line 85 of /etc/rc.liveboot saying there's an unbound variable and that it can't find the disk. Here's what it looks like (sorry its too big to post).

Hi, I also faced “unbound variable” problem and here is Galileo’s solution in more detail:

Steps needed:
1) create ramdisk
2) copy rc.liveboot to ramdisk
3) edit rc.liveboot on ramdisk
4) run rc.liveboot from ramdisk
5) exit

More details:

1) to create ramdisk, use lines from rc.liveboot. You view this file using command cat, i.e. writing “cat /etc/rc.liveboot | more”. Using down arrow key scroll nearly to the end of the file where you will see “RAMDisk()”. Now press “q”. The text will remain on the screen but you will be able to write commands. Here are commands you have to execute (one by one). Please note I changed:

- system-image=no in “hdik” line
- ram://51200 in “hdik” line
- $mntpt to /Volumes in “mount” line

Commands to execute:

dev=`hdik -drivekey system-image=no -drivekey eject-upon-logout=no -nomount ram://51200`
newfs $dev #hack to init partition table automatically
newfs_hfs $dev
mount -t hfs -o nosuid,nodev $dev /Volumes

2) If previous step finished without errors you have working ramdisk in /Volumes. Now copy rc.liveboot to it:
cp /etc/rc.liveboot /Volumes

3) To edit rc.liveboot on ramdisk type:
emacs /Volumes/rc.liveboot
Now scroll the file till line 85 and comment this lines (put # before them):
set ${volinfo}
devname=$1
fstype=$2
To save yor changes pres Ctrl+X and then Ctrl+C. Editor will ask you of saving changes, press “y”.

4) To run rc.liveboot from ramdisk:
sh /Volumes/rc.liveboot init 2000000
If everything works fine you should see two lines of text, first saying something like “messed with swap”

5) enter command “exit” and watch as your live Leopard is starting

Hope this helped.

Thank to creators of this great live distro!

Ok i'm not even getting as far as most of you guys and would appreciate some help. I'm following the instructions:
To boot the LiveDVD, boot from the iPC Disc, except this time press F8 while booting the disc to get to the Boot Menu.
Type in:

config=live.plist

And press Enter to start the LiveDVD Boot. Eventually you will get to the root prompt like this:

:/ root#:

I DON'T GET THAT FAR.... after I type config=live.plist it starts to run some commands and then freezes... the last few lines are:
MAC framework successfully initialized
using 15728 buffer headers and 4096 clusters IO buffer headers
[TSC] delta:20, skipping synchronization. (CPU1)
IOAPIC: Version 0x20 Vectors 0:23
ACPI: System state [S8 S3 S4 S5] (S3)
Class "appleACPIPS2Nub" is duplicate
Duplicate class

Any idea what's going wrong and has anyone else had this problem?
I don't know if this makes a difference but i have used a dual layer dvd+r RW

Hi this works great thanks for posting! Is this caused because I dont have a HFS partition?
Anyway just a couple of notes that may help others:
emacs crashed on my machine so I used nano succesfully.
I only have 2GB of RAM, need 1.1GB to run so that only leaves 0.9GB for RAM drive space.
'rc.liveboot init 2000000' caused a kernel panic so I tried 'rc.liveboot init 512000' and it worked fine.

And also a question: I have copied the modified rc.liveboot to a USB stick, and I want to know if I can mount the USB stick to save making a RAM drive everytime I want to run it?

Update: Yes I made an HFS partition and this line 85 error disappears. Simple.
Another thing I noticed is the DVD would not boot with my USB printer plugged in (took me ages to figure that out) so if you have problems unplug unsued USB peripherals.

Then welcome to the InfiniteMac Community.

One recommanded thing to do when beeing new, is reading the Rules (http://osx86.net/misc.php?do=cfrules).

This site does not deal with warez - use Google (http://google.com) if you are looking for DL.

This forum is just the place if you are looking for further support for the OSx86 installation & adjustment - although it is not always that easy to get adequate support for releases like this, if the one who pieced it together doesn't do himself...

I had the same problem. It turnned out that I used apostrophe instead of Grave accent.

So, I typed dev='hdik -drivekey and so on, then finally had "File not found and directory write-protected"

Then i typed dev=`hdik -drivekey… and leo started!

Think different ;-)

Is there a kit to make a custom iso for those of us that already own a retail disk instead of having to wait a long time to download it from torrent? Thank you.
