Hi there
I'm thinking about a system built around a Phenom II X3 720 BE processor and ATI HD 3650 512MB graphics card.
I need help with the motherboard and which installation to use. I would like something which isn't too old and possibly has a lot of stuff integrated on the motherboard, like ethernet (a must) and firewire (optional).
any suggestions? should i forget the X3 or not?

As far as i remember, LawlessPPC was released just for Phenom CPU`s and a lot of ppl reported it working on them without any problems. If you want distro with a lot of stuff, then go for iPC 10.5.6 - it should work on Phenom aswell. Both of them have hardware support list so check your GFX, Ethernet etc. there, or search the forum to check if others have the same hardware working.
Btw. why X3 ?

i was thinking more in the direction of a motherboard with a lot of stuff integrated on it, but thanks for the advice regarding which installation to use.
why X3? no money for X4 and since i plan on doing some video editing, more cores is the way to go...

ok my distro supports motherboards that use the sb600 aswell as others but personally i would avoid sb600 bords due to the usb issue they have yeas it can be overcome by using a seperate usb card but if you want a usb keyboard and usb hotswap it can be a bit of a pain. I should rephrase that. Its not keen on the apple aluminium keyboard it works no problem but when you hot swap because the keyboard is also a hub it has issues.

probably sb700 or onwards if your definately going amd route but do some reading on these chips to locate kexts and see if any issues exist

i'm thinking of building an AMD system and i heard around here, your distro was made for it, so....i like something like hardware list supported or something.
PS: i don't can't get the distro so easily....

Yeah you should get the tri core and i would get this motherboard and i would get the distro that supports phenoms like iPC OSx86 10.5.6 and the sb750 is really good for overclocking and i heard that some biostar motherboards could activate the 4th core on phenom tri core's cause one of the cores is turned off in the tri's for some instability reasons so you could just add a little more voltage and have a 2.8ghz quad phenom 2!!!!
