10.5.2 Update for AMD only, eddie11c

I am in the testing phase of making my own 10.5.2 update just for AMD machines. It does not include the 9.2.0 kernel since not everyone has EFI installed. But what I was wondering is, what's the best way to get a few people to test it out? Just in case it isn't working quite right.

AMD 10.5.2.mpkg.zip

Feel free to try it.
Thanks to cgsheen for uploading

Just torrent it. Write a ncie nfo saying what it does etc and include the 9.2 kernel if you can. Installing efi is a piece of cake so I don;t see why people shouldn't do it.

ok just did a fresh install of 10.5.1 and upgraded to 10.5.2 without any issues that I can see. Will have to test out some of the programs to make sure they are working. Will check back in after.

well you can check tpb for the update for AMD. I tried installing it a few times, with and without kernel and all seemed to work ok. Others are welcome to test it also.

eddie11c

I believe so, as with all AMD machines you still have to use the modified kernel anyways.

I made my own update, you can find it on TPB. I make no guarantees, but it should work for you.

yes pretty much a fresh install with just efi added.

is there anyway to put this onto a bootable cd/dvd so once i install 10.5.1 i can put this into the dvd slot and boot from it and install the update?

what comes with your update?

Well I ran carbon copy cloner before i tried installing with pacifist. Not sure what did it but i ended up not being able to boot. When it goes to boot the drive nothing happens, no darwin etc. Ill just hang on some more until zeph's 10.5.2 is released. Thanks though.

Just install without the new kernel in the install options. Just know ahead of time if you have graphics with QE/CI its going to sit for about 2 minutes before the desktop loads. Screen will go black then to standby then eventually it will load.

In Piratabay, it is the update of OSX 10.5.2 for AmD.
I installed it and works perfect.
In a single package that installs everything to you, including new kernel... very simple
... and it works perfect
...It requires to have installed efi

any way the the efi patch can be included within the 10.5.2 installation? Or its just isn't possible? If I don't need efi, I'll try to install the amd 10.5.2 package only. I'll let you know my results in a bit.

Results, I installed the update without EFI, and it still works, however, I would have to wait for 2 minutes or so for a display to show up. Anyway to fix this? Also, is there anyway to install kernal 9.2.0 separately and configure EFI without USB Drive? Please help, thanks.

About the 2-minute wait: it said so in the description of the file in the bay: "If you don't have EFI installed be warned that you will sit at a black screen for about 2 minutes waiting for the desktop to load with the old kernel(9.1.0)."

eddie11c
02-15-2008, 08:39 PM
Glad to hear its working for people, until a new kernel is released that works on non EFI machines the only way i know of avoiding the 2 minute wait is running in VESA mode .ie no QE/CI.

As far as configuring EFI. You need to have some other source to store the files to set it up. I think it could be done from the install DVD from terminal, but you still need a mountable source other than your OSX drive to run the startupfiletool.

I installed the update and everything is running smoothly but one thing I noticed is that in System Profiler, for the number of cores its just showing 1. I have AMD X2. Before the 10.5.2 update, it was showing 2. Also is it safe to install the Graphics update?

cgsheen
02-15-2008, 10:15 PM
Same here - just shows one core. Both are working so it's no big deal though... I (stupidly) went for the "graphics update" from the Apple Software Update. Shouldn't have done that! It just brought back the NVDAresman kernel panic for my 8600GTS and I had to find a graphics installer that worked again. PITA...

Otherwise the 10.5.2 AMD Update was GREAT! Thanks!!!

I'm running 9C31, EFI, with the 9.2 kernel

(oh, it crapped out Toast... I don't have a problem with anything else, just Toast...)

As far as configuring EFI. You need to have some other source to store the files to set it up. I think it could be done from the install DVD from terminal, but you still need a mountable source other than your OSX drive to run the startupfiletool.

No. there are instructions included in the download for EFI that allows you to install it in Single User Mode. No need for a USB device or another partition or anything. (As long as you're not using Grub or some other boot loader that is...)

Create directory iamefi in the root folder of your boot osx disk.

Copy all included files into it

Boot in Single User mode by mashing F8 key during boot (right after bios POST) type -s and press enter

Then enter the following commands

cd /iamefi

./startupfiletool /dev/rdiskXsX ./boot_v8

reboot

Whereas rdiskXsX is the partition where your OSX install is (you can check that out on Disk Utility in OSX)

And v* is the EFI version bootloader you wish to use.

oups ... It seems I'm tired ... the kernel in DVD is mach_kernel 9.0.0 which is SSE2/SSE3 so I'm wondering if it's related to the kernel.

@eddie11c and Zephyroth,

Really thanx for all your replise! So, if it related to the kernel in the v2 DVD,is it possible to create a new iso by replacing the kernel in the v2 DVD with the kernel from the DVD v1(Yes,DVD 10.5.1 really works perfectly on my machine)to fit Sempron--I heard the same issue from splinter182
(http://osx.kbot.de/comments.php?DiscussionID=377&page=1#Item_10)and Althon(http://osx.kbot.de/comments.php?DiscussionID=360&page=1#Item_4)?And how?By
Ultra ISO?

Thanx & Regards!!

From windows this can be done with Ultra ISO, once you open the ISO in the program you can right click and choose to show the HFS information. Then simply drag the new kernel there and burn the ISO. Don't save it as this will mess up the ISO.

Many guys had complainted the same issue on iATKOS DVD about endless reboot
(http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=77488&st=0&start=0)
And I found NO NX/XD Options in my BIOS as ntkas.org has states here:

Then it gives any clues?

HELP!

@Zephyroth and eddie11c
Is it possible to use netkas 9.20 universal speedstep kernel after 10.5.1 updated to 10.5.2 by the package of eddie11c w/o PC_EFI? As there is no way for my BIOS to support PC EFI,I have to stick to v1 DVD to install, then update it by the package, leaving the nagging 2 minutes black screen delay.

Thanx in advance!!!!

Regards!!!

As far as I know there is no limitation on running EFI anymore. All computers can run EFI since it's emulated. I also believe the new kernel still requires EFI. You can test it by renaming it then from Darwin type the new kernels name, this will boot from the other kernel. If you get a kernel panic you know you still need EFI.

Thanx for your quick reply!eddie11c,but I have tried for >6 times to get EFI installed and nope---after the line "System/Librarry/Entensions.mkexts from 4XXXXX" ect,I
got automatically reboot,so I wander that's the fault of my BIOS.I use Acronis OS Seclector for Windows(X3),SUSE and Tiger ,Leopard, does that make the strange issue
?Also I notice that after the command "./stratupfiletool /dev/disk2s1 ./boot_v8" the terminal output " “HFS+ partition detected, write xxx bytes ..xxx..write back xxx byte”,and when use "list -a /Volumes/Laopard/", there is no folder named "iamefi" at the root.I just follow the instructions in wikidot---did I make some mistake?

You need to copy the EFI files to a directory on your Tiger partition name it something like efi, boot into tiger and open terminal.
sudo -s
##password
cd /efi
hdiutil unmount /dev/disk2s1
./startupfiletool /dev/disk2s1 ./boot_v8

Hello:

Same problem here with EFI installation. I also have an Amd Sempron. I don't know it matters of not.
The first attempt to install EFI was using an efi directory in the destination partition and booting in single mode user as described on page 3 of this thread. The startupfiletool seems to find the hfs partition but nothing changes when i reboot the machine.
The second attempt was using an usb flash. I run the startupfiletool from another leopard disk using the method described above by eddie11c. The startupfiletool seems to find the destination hfs partition, but when i try to boot from this partition the computer reboots. On the destination partition i have the 9.2.0 kernel included on the 10.5.2 amd update by eddie11c.

So I can't boot anymore from this partition! Any help?

Thank you all.

Dani.

Thanx eddie11c,
I will try your new solution later, but tell me if I get endless reboot loop again, how can I uninstall EFI ?And I must tell you that the disk ID of Leopard is different in Tiger (Last time as I remember it is disk0s1,and It keeps changing, dose that makes mistake?)And what is the slight difference between command "hdiutl unmount" and "diskutil umnount"?--I have checked the man of "hdiutl" and got no clues --:-)

Since I can NOT boot from DVD I suddenly come across an idear of installing Leopard from Tiger use ISO by Pacifist, but there are so many folders in ISO and I am confused which one to choose and the install order cos there are many packages with the same names.Could you please write a HOW-TO with detailed instructions to install by HDD for me?

Thanx a million!!

Regards!

@Dani,
Maybe you have to reinstall your OS by erasing cos the EFI written into the MBR,only erase the Active Primary Partition can make the EFI disappear.

Good Luck!

EFI -kernel panic with 10.5.2 rev1
I tried almost all combinations of kernels with mbr efi: with 9.2.0 i get reboot loop and with 9.0.0 - kernel panic. My quetions are all the kernels support sse2 ( my proc. amd 3000+, so sse2 only)? and if so, how can i get it working?
Bootloader work without DVD. Have workin Tiger on another HD.

Hi I am new here but have several questions. I installed Zeph rev. 1 and then used mach_sleep (sleep kernel from IRC) because I need the Leo to sleep. 10.5.1 worked like a charm. Anyway I used the Vanilla 10.5.2 update (with Installer.app don't use Pacifist, removed AppleIntelCPU.., nano Scripts/1) then I patched it with Marvin's Util and booted again with mach_sleep (which is 9.1.0). Now sleep dosen't work. I had pc efi installed with original Zeph rev.1 but I am not sure if it works or not since I have a 2 min. wait with QE/CI Geforce 7300 GT (with flashed bios for 512 mb) after the 10.5.2 update. I can run the universal speedstep 9.2.0 (from IRC) kernel but does this mean that I have efi working or not. When you talk about 9.2.0 are you talking about a vanilla 9.2.0?

Zeph or Eddie: is there any way to test pc efi functionality on an AMD machine. I have an Intel machine with PC EFI and I use Vanilla kexts there but on AMD can I use vanilla kexts to avoid the 2 minute wait on boot up? The Graphic Update after 10.5.2 update gave me NDARasman and Geforce kext kernel panic (Replaced these 2 kexts with Zeph NVUniversal.installer).

About the endless reboots above it smells to me like a vanilla kernel rebooting the machine.
About uninstalling pc efi, google pc efi I think the command was something like ./startiupfiletoll /dev/xxxx ./boot_i386 or ./i386 ( http://www.digitmemo.com/articles/734/howto-install-efi-patch-and-enable-vanilla-os-x-kernel-in-hackintosh/ )

Vele, if you already have EFI installed, you should upgade your kernel to the hacked 9.2.0, update your AppleSMBIOS, System and dsmos kexts. This will remove the long wait prior to loading the desktop with QE/CI enabled.

vele
02-24-2008, 05:10 AM
eddie I already have 9.2.0 speedstep from netkas from IRC. Is that different from the hacked one?

eddie11c
02-24-2008, 05:46 AM
Same difference, did you update the other kext files? They are what causes the hang I think.

vele
02-24-2008, 05:48 AM
OK in another post you say just use AppleSMBios from PC_EFI v8, and the new system and dsmos kext. Since I havent downloaded your Update from TPB but I patched the vanilla update, I don't have the correct AppleSMbios dmsos and System.kext. Please whisper your comment to me with the links if you have them. Thanks.

Hi to all people here. One big thanks for Eddie11c and his excelent work. Can i add this in AMD DVD 10.5.2 and will it work. One question is why when I'm making backup with time machine i need to make 41 gb of backup, what is the problem and how can i fix that. That is with 10.5.1 and 10.5.2 (10.5.2. is with kernel 9.1 coz I'm not using efi), help me with this please if u know.
Thanks in advance again and don't stop doing this kind of job.

Thanks eddie! I dont have EFI, but it works perfect. After reboot, it went black for about 2 minutes, just as you said, and after the desktop loaded and it was 10.5.2.

have you yourself or heard of anyone else experiencing kernel panics? I have been getting many kernel panics specifically when downloading files using transmission. I am sure that it has to with either the files download process or writing to the disk. I have disabled the screen save and power saver because I thought that was the cause but no luck.

Again my hardware is:
Asus M2N32E_SLI Deluxe, ADM 4200+
2gb DDR2 MEM.

I'm having the same problem, it has to do with the nforceata kext. It is for nforce 3 and 4, not 5.

I got one new kext, which is better than the old one, but not 100% okay. I think you just need to wait for a while, for the packages to come :o)
