View Full Version : Stacks in grid mode causes freeze

Hi!

First off, my hardware:

Gigabyte EP45-UD3R
Intel Quad Core Q8400
RAM: 4GB DDR2
Gigabyte GeForce 9600 GT Silent 512MB
1 TB WD IntelliSpeed SATA HDD
OptiArc SATA DVD-RW
Nexus 430W Ultra Silent PSU

Secondly, my installation:
Vanilla OSX 10.5.7 installed of retail 10.5.6 and updated via software update.

This is what I've got working:
Sound (kext),
Ethernet with bonjour (kext),
Sleep ,
Shutdown/Restart (kext),
QE/CI (via EFI string)
Time Machine (via EFI String)

So, everything seems to be running fine, BUT:

When I try to access my Applications stack, in grid mode, my screen freezes. Sometimes I can get as far as to get it open, but when I close the stack, the system freezes.

This does NOT occur when I boot without QE/CI enabled (without the EFI string). OpenGL Extension viewer tells me that everything is OK, and all the tests I throw at my system in QE/CI mode get a green light.

Any ideas would be highly appreciated. Tell me if I left out something vital.

See if there's a kext for your card. It might help. Because OSX isn't communicating with the card quite right, causing the Grid bug but otherwise clears tests.
Question, though...have you tried any games on it? Depending on the tests, they may not be fully proving things.

OK, I think figured it out.

Removed the extra power cord from my GF 9600GT, so it would run 'half speed', it fixed the problem, and now everything's working smoothly.

The problem must be my underpowered PSU, guess the only thing a 430W is good for nowadays is a HTPC with an integrated 3D card.

So what I did was order a new 850W Nexus RX-8500 <15.5dB modular PSU ;)

Ok, I got the new PSU today, and guess what, didn't help at all!

So I'm back where I started.

Any ideas guys? What drivers should I try?

Make sure your GFX card is not overclocked, As it can cause this.

It's not overclocked. I've even set the PCI-E port to 100Mhz manually to be sure. Flashing the latest BIOS on it didn't help either.

Any other ideas? Might it still be a driver issue?
