Hey Guys !

i am getting a free upgrade from my friend 3500+ to X2 3800+ do i need to add any kext or any changes ? and also will there be any performance improvement in my current rig ?

See current configuration in my signature.

Thanks

No, you dont need any new kexts. Kernel is handling with CPU - if you're using Voodoo kernel, you shouldnt have any problems. And about the performance - if you're going to switch from single core 3500+ to dual core - even slower speed would improve your performance. With faster cpu and additional core you will definitely see better performance.

Thanks Taisto.
i changed it sucessfully but the cpu temps is 10 degree C higher than compared to running windows ..why is that..? and will cpus=1 fix this issue ?

if i do that will my other core will also be used ?

Thats common problem on AMD cpus. Its because mac os doesnt manage power properly on amd. To cool your cpu a little you can try removing AppleIntelPowerManagement and AppleThermal kexts - sometimes it helps. Cpus=1 will disable one of the cores so it wont work but i dont think it will change the temperature. Anyway, if you use desktop pc and the temp isnt too high for the cpu i guess you dont have to worry. Maybe newer versions of voodoo kernel and power kext will help there

Okay i will Try.But i think i am going back to 3500+ because 3800+ is very Hot in Sys 50C idle and easly touches 60C while watching HD 720p Movies.Cleanly installed with Artistic Silver paste in Stock Coolent.

the above happens in MAC os where as in windows 40C to 60C

So overall there is some problem in Cooling i suppose i need a better coolent or Do you guys have any suggestion ?

Have you tried removing those kexts ? Sometimes it helps. Better cooling could help as well. Anyway, 50C is quite normal temp for AMD Cpus i guess, all my amd worked with something around 50c. Also You can try to use VoodooPower kext modified by Andy if you want to check - it works on some AMD cpus ( works on Turion X2 so should work on yours ).

If you can get it, I would *highly* recommend picking up an Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro. It's an underrated cooler that does quite well even with the extra heat OS X brings. My X2 doesn't go above 50C even in OS X no matter what I throw at it. :D

Today I ordered Freezer 64 Pro, thanks for advice Ali C hope it works ;) I have AMD 6000+ and temps are awful - 50C at idle and now (on summer) they often rise to 55 (IDLE  ). While in Windows 40-48.
