View Full Version : What video card do you recommend?

Hey. I'm looking to get a decent video card to replace the GeForce 8800 GT that I borrowed from a friend. I'm looking at either a GeForce 9800 GTX+, a GTX260, or maybe even a GTX280. Can anyone tell me if these cards are sufficiently compatible?
If the above cards have problems, it'd be nice to get a list of cards (preferably NVIDIA) that are known to work well with Leopard on a PC. I'd like to get as high-end a card as possible, since I plan to dual-boot windows for gaming purposes.

9800GTX wotks fine with Leopard 10.5.7 and GFX Strings.
Also GTS250 (the same GPU) works fine.

Ah, thanks for the reply. I suppose I could go with the 9800, but I wouldn't mind something a little more powerful (especially for games in Windows). No one knows anything about the other cards I mentioned?

GT200 doesn't support out of the box in 10.5.7 need to install netkas drivers but it works.
GTX260 and probably GTX285 in 10.6 no need drivers like 8800gt only string dsdt injector.
I recomended msi card or gigabyte.

i would recommend a card that's supported for opencl of course.
btw msi is just average.

Interestingly, I just saw on newegg a GTX 285 "for Mac". I read one review of someone who put it in their Mac Pro. I guess that means that there are drivers for a GTX 285 and it's fully supported? Also, what would the difference be between the different card manufacturers? I'd like to go with the Gigabyte but it only has one review on newegg (which may be a good thing, depends on how you look at it). lol also my machine just happens to be a mini-tower, so I'm wondering if this thing might burn up inside the case. Eh, it should be alright, if I install another fan I guess.

Alright I've done a crapload of research. So there is a GTX 285 for Mac, and it's drivers can be used with the hackintosh if I also use an injector, as near as I can tell. The other option I might explore is making my own Mac card by changing the EEPROM chip and flashing the card ROM. As far as I can tell though that actually isn't necessary since I'm dealing with PC hardware and a BIOS and all. Someone correct me if I'm wrong... :P
