Post installation questions, iPC 10.5.6, Dell x300

Hey,

I managed to install iPC OSX86 10.5.6 on my Dell Latitude x300 laptop and I'm quite happy with what I have so far (wireless - WPA included, bluetooth, sound, usb, etc). The specs are: Pentium M 1.4Ghz, 640MB Ram, 80GB HDD (more: www.dell.com/downloads/us/products/latit/x300_spec.pdf).

Things I selected during the installation:
Voodo Kernel 9.5
Video: GMA900
Chipset: LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA
Ethernet: AppleBC5751Ethernet
Wireless: Intel 2200
Audio: AC97
Patches: PS/2 Mouse Fix, ACPI Fix, IOPCIFamily.kext patched, Seatbelt.kext 10.5.5

I was wondering what would be the steps required to -try- to get my laptop to 'sleep' or 'hibernate' (google what term, look where, etc.)? Currently it just freezes when I click 'sleep' on the apple menu.

I currently change the brightness in the bios, is there any way to change it within the OS? I gave it new keyboard shortcuts (my keyboard didn't have the default keys), but it doesn't work.

I didn't select 'power management' at installation time, can I enable it now or do I have to re-install? (I did select all the applications except 'Marvin's AMD Utility', one of them could help me, right?)

Is there anyway to -try- to enable 'scrolling' support in my touchpad? (nothing fancy, it would be nice not to have to move the cursor all the way to the right or use the up/down keys)

I wouldn't want to waste anyone's time, I'm just asking to 'get pointed in the right direction'; links, search terms, software, facts about what I can/can't do, would be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I did. I tried Kalyway, iDeneb and iPC and only iPC worked (got to the installation screen okay).

I'll write a short guide to help you guys out.

Step 1:
Turn on the laptop, go into the BIOS and disable things that might be problematic (ie. 'Ethernet' and 'WiFi').

Step 2:
Download 'iPC 10.5.6' (I got mine from demonoid). Burn it using the lowest speed possible (X2 or X4, or whatever is the lowest option in your particular dvd burner)

Step 3:
Get an external USB DVD Reader, put your iPC dvd, boot into the USB DVD Reader.

Step 4:
Wait.. wait.. On the top, chose 'Disk Utility', Format your drive (remember to backup your data, formating will destroy everything). I formated using 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)'.

Step 5:
Select the drive you just formated. Eventually you'll see a 'Customize' button, click it. Select the following:

Voodo Kernel 9.5
Video: GMA900
Chipset: LegacyAppleIntelPIIXATA
Ethernet: AppleBC5751Ethernet
Wireless: Intel 2200
Audio: AC97
Patches: PS/2 Mouse Fix, ACPI Fix, IOPCIFamily.kext patched, Seatbelt.kext 10.5.5

(IMO) For now: 'No more. No less.' I tried selecting different things various times and those above work, after you successfully install OSX and feel like trying to change the selection above and get some positive results (ie. you selected power management tools and they worked after the installation) please post here.

Step 6:
Continue the installation. Wait.. wait... Make your user/password/etc.

Step 7:
Turn off your computer, Re-enable Wifi/Ethernet/etc on the BIOS.

Boot into OSX (you can use the '-v' boot-flag to see what's happening at boot, errors/etc).

Congratulations! You successfully installed OSX Leopard on your dell x300!

What I tested and works:
- WiFi (No encryption, WEP, WPA-Personal)
- Touchpad (No scrolling tho..), Keyboard
- Native screen resolution (Video card works normally)
- USB
- Audio
- HDD related things (ie. Installing .dmg)
- Bluetooth (I could sync my phone and send/transfer files)

What does not work:
- Fn Keys (change brightness/volume/etc, you can change the volume manually by clicking on the 'speaker icon' on the top and you can change the brightness in the BIOS settings)
- Sleep (Please post if you get this to work!)
- Ethernet (I found a kext that makes this work, but breaks the sound. Post here if you want it, I'm too lazy to search for it now.)

Not tested:
Firewire
InfraRed

:)Succeed. Thanks a lot Aninimus.But I found that the WIFI cannot be function. I can't launch the network utility as well. The network selector cannot discover any network. I think I should try to reinstall it.

Moreover, I can't boot my Windows 7 after installing 10.5.6. Should I install some patches for 10.5.6? The bootmgr is missing when I select to boot up by Windows 7.

Hey, congrats con el installation.

Did you select 'Wireless: Intel 2200' during the configuration before you installed OSX? Did you remember to re-enable the wireless nic in the BIOS after the installation? Did you upgrade Airport (I didn't and it worked, but it's something you can try)? If you did, I can't be much help, but maybe someone else can help.

I didn't install windows (or linux) AND OSX, but many people 'dualboot', try googling:

You should install that before clicking the install button during the installation (that's what I did and it works fine) o_o... If you damage your installation you can try booting with: -s (command line) or -x (safe mode) and you should google/post any errors that appear with -v (verbose mode).

Thanks to Aninimus. Ethernet is working. And I upgraded the software including AirPort to see that WiFi will work or not. Unfortunately, it doesn't. I have tried to follow your steps to reinstall the intel 2200. No hardware is detected. However, my intel 2200 works fine in Windows 7, so I believe that the hardware is fully function.
I just wonder if I have to type some comments in the terminal to activate the intel 2200 in Leopard??:)

Although the ethernet is working, I have to config the IP address manually. My dell cannot detect the config automatically. Strange????But it won't break the sound. Sound card works fine with ethernet.

After I tried to fix the problem of wifi and ethernet, I found that the problem of my X300 is the driver of the ethernet mixed wih airport. The wifi driver cannot find the physical address of the intel 2200.
When I install the intel 2200 only, wifi seem works. it can discover the networks. But once i try to connect the network, it hangs and "bus errors" appear.

when i install both ethernet and wifi, airport works with my ethernet. no wifi appear. strang!!!

first of all i have to say, that I am new here, just started doing my first experiences with mac os x86. My english isnt't very goot, but I hope you will understand me.

I installed iOS 10.5.6 as recommended above but can't get my Wireless Card (Intel 2200 BG) to work.
Whenever I start AirPort to configure WLAN, it crashes.
I don't know how to fix, can you please help me?

If it is not possible with the 2200 BG, I also have an Siemens Gigaset USB Adapter 54 and a D-Link DWA-111. Both were identified by the System Identifier.

Would be great to get WLAN working, otherwise it is unfortunately useless.

The things above worked fine for me. If it's relevant(?): I didn't update airport (or anything), I made sure the wifi card was enabled in the bios and I booted with -f (you should try booting in safe mode too, -x).

Beyond that, I can't help. Good luck.

As a side note: I got tired of OSX, I'm currently runing Arch Linux (www.archlinux.org) + OpenBox.

We have one of these that we just finished the install on. How long does it take to boot? I think we messed something up.

One thing we could not find was all the patches to select in the custom install, specifically the ACPI Fix.

The ISO I downloades was iPC_OSx86_10.5.6.iso

I don't have OSX installed anymore, but it should be fully usable in under a minute.

I'm trying to install it on my x300 but its panicing about 30 seconds into the initial boot with the DVD. Now one thing I am doing different is that I have the DVD in the drive in the docking station, not a USB DVD drive. Is that the issue? If so, how about running it off of a USB stick as I do not have a USB DVD drive? If not, what other issues did you run into that you had to overcome? I did update by BIOS version a week or so before trying.
