Hi,

I currently have the VooDoo 9.5.0 kernel, and have had a few panics over the past few weeks. i want to try the vanilla kernel to see if there is any improvements but i dont want to erase the existing kernel just in case it goes wrong......

i have a core 2duo processor so i hope the vanilla kernel should work.

Is there any simple ways of trying this out? and anywhere i can specifically get the vanilla kernel as i dont think it is on my Iatkos V7

Easy ;) - Just copy the Vanilla Kernel file to the root directory of your drive with a name different to mach_kernel.

This is how you do on Terminal:

sudo -s
cp /path/to/mach_kernel /vanilla_kernel
chown root:wheel /vanilla_kernel
chmod 644 /vanilla_kernel

Then enter vanilla_kernel at boot prompt and see if you have luck with it.

Hi, thanks for your reply.....

im still not exactly sure what im supposed to do? when i try type vanilla_kernel whilst in -s mode at startup it says command not found, and i have a file in my 'Leopard' directory names vanilla_kernel.

what happens if i replace the current mach_kernel (9.5.0) with vanilla_kernel? obviously ill make a backup of the 9.5.0 as mach_kernel.backup just incase anything goes wrong, i can then restore it right?

ive tried replacing the old mach kernel file, with the new vanilla kernel and booted up just fine, but when i go into terminal and type in uname -a, it still shows voodoo 9.5.0 kernel....... why is that?

I don't know why exactly is done wrong here, but it doesn't look like you succefully replaced the file. ;)
Mabe if you try to delte mach_kernel before moving the vanilla kernel file to mach_kernel?

Maybe I've also been wrong about the file permissions, my mach_kernel's owner is root, but the Group is admin and not wheel as I wrote above, or maybe you can boot up using vanilla_kernel, if you enter /vanilla_kernel with the / in front of it?

ive even tried using osx86tools to install vanilla kernel, i also used that software to install the system.kext to the extensions folder. i can succesfully boot backup, but when i check the kernel using uname -a it tellms me it is still voodoo 9.5.0. i went back to check the mach_kernel to see if it is still the vanilla one, and it is? im confused now lol

Not only u. :D You're sure you downloaded the Vanilla Kernel? :D

PS: You can have Vanilla Kernel by don't select one at the iAtkos Setup, but it doesn't realy matter as the Voodoo based ones, act like Vanilla, if you System supports it. :)

You can also apply the latest Combo Update this should give you 9.8.0 Vanilla Kernel :)

ive tried doing that update, my system no longer start up after it, im not sure why........ yeh i 100% got the vanilla kernel 9.6.0, and also the system kext from that site you mentioned ;)

the only reason why i want to try vanilla is because ive had a few kernel panics, and was thinking maybe i wont get any with vanilla?
