Yes the speed is correct, but how do I fix the unknown part? I have SMBios.plist, but I dont see how to fix it there.

I read the other "wrong cpu info" thread but I did not see a fix there.

Well, editing "about this mac" mac for appearance if easy.

I am asking around, sorry for cross-posting, but the thread is similar... how do you check that CPU and RAM speeds are actually working at right speed?

I also want to find out how to make the system properly recognize it.

CPU, use Cpu-X

But I still can't figure out the "Just for appearance" I just want it to show my i7 instead of Unknown.

CPU-x extracts from binary I think... does it go through the OS?

I think it was OSXTools that enable you to edit "About This Mac"

I am talking about benchmarks, run tests to triple check...

I don't think that OSX86Tools works in snow leopard for customizing 10.6 About this mac.

Yea, I tried using OSX86Tools and it screwed mine up. So you'll have to do it manually - it's really not that hard.

Go to /System/Library/CoreServices/loginwindow.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/AboutThisMac.strings

Here's a sample from mine:

"ABOUT_BOX_SINGLE_PROCESSOR_FIELD_FORMAT" = "3.02 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad";

Thanks! It worked!

How do you guys benchmark yours systems to tell if its working at right speeds?

I use Geekbench to see what the Score is after I tweak my System.

"Intel Core i7 920 @ 3.6 GHz"

What's your temp running 3.6 ... I'm up to 3.07 and it usually runs around 50 C.

Doc,

Would you say this looks right for my laptop?

May I ask you how SL works on your system?

It should be pretty fast and stable with such processor and 6GB DDRIII RAM.

I'm planning to buy similar machine.

Have you tried Win7 x64?

Doc,

Would you say this looks right for my laptop?

Well it looks OK but then I don't know what your real system is.

Model/Motherboard will report Apple info
Processor id should report your 'real' processor
Processor Frequency should report your overclock speed.

Don't know who your speaking to but I'll reply ....

My i7 920 build runs Geekbench score is 10800 at 3.3 GHz.

My E8400 build runs Geedkbench score of 5800 at 3.72 GHz.

I like it but it was a lot harder to set up for both Leo and SL. The P5Q is much more Mac friendly.

Now that it is set up it seems to run OK in 32 bit; no 64 bit ethernet kext ..... but I'm OK with that.

I haven't loaded Win 7 x64 but x32 runs fast and problem free. It setup automatically with default drivers.

Doc, my system is in my signature! :p

Doc, my system is in my signature! :p

What I meant was ... I don't know if Geekbench is 'lying' 'cause I don't know if what it is reporting is a true reflection of your system.

For example .... my 920 is 2.67 GHz but O/C to 3.33 GHz. Geekbench reports the OEM chip under Processor ID and 3.33 under Processor Freq which is exactly the same as the BIOS.

It looks like it's reporting the specs you have in your sig.
