View Full Version : Unable to install SL, unable to update from 10.5.4

Hello,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on my issues here. Ive been all over forums and google as well as *a different site*...

1st- I can seemingly only install 10.5.4 with Leo4all or iDeneb.
Ive tried iAkos 4.1 and 7, which show the "no" symbol on cd boot.
Tried iDeneb 10.5.4, 10.5.8 with the same results; 1.3 (10.5.4) will install.

2nd - I cant update successfully - hangs with a kernel panic; nor can I boot SL (to a seperate HD, possibly due to it being an ide hd). For example; Ive gone through many guides, fought with DSDT patcher (build fail), copied kexts, repaired permissions and all that, but no matter what I do I get a kernel panic on my Leo side afterwards- even though I hadnt modified anything on that drive - only the SL drive. I cant boot to SL - I get a loading Darwin X86 prompt, then it hangs with a frozen cursor.

I dont necessarily need SL, I just need something higher than 10.5.4- preferably .8 but will settle for .7 - Im trying to run iLife9 since my mac g5 upstairs is a ppc and a slow-balls POS. :)

Any thoughts or suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Please let me know if you need any more information, I would be glad to post it.

Thanks for your time.

Download the updates and patch them using Zephyroth's AMD patcher and use that to update.

First reboot scared me, as it loaded the apple screen then rebooted, but entering -v -f seemed to let it boot into ... 10.5.8!!! Thanks, punk_zappa!!! Going to reboot again now, without flags just to be sure.

Even if I need to flush the cache everytime, you're still my hero. :)

No worries. Just trying to help fellow newbies like myself. It usually boots twice to apply the updates.

Good luck.

Hello again,

Just looking for some assistance from anyone with usb devices (flash drive, usb ide drive) not being mounted at all. They are listed in profiler, but are not mounted. They can not be seen through disk util.

I have already tried installing IOUSBFamily with no result.
Thanks for your time.

P.s. My usb keyboard and mouse DO work. :D

In your Leo4All DVD there is a usb fix. Extract that with Pacifist and install. Report back if it works or not.

OR

Check your System.kext for your kernel version and download a Seatbelt.kext for it. Install with kext helper.

Having a hard time finding a 9.4.0 seatbelt, and oddly enough, dvd are not reading properly in my sata dvd drive - Leo4all 4 doesnt load anything at all, and Ideneb 10.5.8 (just for a reference) stated an empty disc.

Still looking.
Should I maybe update my kernel to a newer one (9.5 or 9.6, or ....?)
Edit: Using OSXtools Im attempting to install machkernel7
Edit2: Nope, hung on Loading Darwin/X86 blinking cursor.
Edit3: -v -f shows : Loading Dar...
Loading kernel mach_kernel
Loading HFS+ file: [mach kernel] from 422d480.
Loading HFS+ file: [mach kernel] from 422d480. {again}

Cool thanks. Im going to try to only select the kernel from leo4all installer and see if that works, if not it doesnt take too long to reinstall. Back in 8 hours or so.

Edit: If you dont mind, you may as well PM me the link anyway, and Ill just do it after I install and update. By the way; thank you very much again for all the help you've offered so far.

Edit 2: So this time Ill backup my seatbelt first, before the update. And also, to not play with the About this mac modifier. I used it, it gave me the generic boxes, I was unable to restore the true data (even by following the directions) and was unable to install anything as I had no valid cpuid. Odd.

If you chose to reinstall, I would suggest to update 1 at a time. Download 10.5.5 update from Apple, patch and install. Do the same for the next. After 10.5.6 you might have a problem mounting .dmg files, check system.kext for kernel version and install seatbelt.kext (using kext helper) for that version, most likely 9.6. Continue downloading updates and don't forget to patch. Do not play with any modifier so not to screw your install.

Ok, heres the update:
I had to reinstall. I didnt notice that there was a page two (you replied) until after I'd already reinstalled the patched 10.5.8 update. Interestingly, before I did _anything_ else, I tried to install the usb2.0 fix that was on my leo4all disc. The installer crashed, just like everything else I'd tried to install yesterday after mucking with Osxtools. This time, though, I hadnt touched osxtools yet. So something is wrong with my system. I can not install iLife as it crashes the installer.

2nd: You say that my kernel will be upgraded to 9.6 after I install update (downloading 10.5.5, .6, .7 now, so I can patch after yet another install), 10.5.6, but wouldnt I already be at 9.8 with my 10.5.8 install?? Im not, im still looking at the ToH 9.4.0. Im a little lost. I wouldve thought (based on your comment, quoted) that I would be running a higher kernel...? Does jumping to .8 with no in-between patches not patch the kernel? Is there something more deeply wrong with my setup that Im not aware of? Sorry for all the questions, but now Im just confused.:'(

Edit: 3rd: the only tool I know of to update a kernel is osxtools and it crashed. HA! ... sigh. Editted Edit: NM, found the terminal commands.

Is everything working now?

That's a big negative. I was able to install your kernel, np. Even with the dl'd seatbelt and the usb2fix from leo4all, no dice on the USB HD.
Installing the latest (patched) security update screwed me again, too.

Installing once again. But this time, I'll try the patched versions. Oddly enough, I have no clue how to patch the combined updates; the only reason I knew how to install a patched .8 is because the amd updater searched and found it. Using marvins states that there's no binaries (duh, its a dmg). Ill figure it out though. I have .5 .6 and .7 downloaded, and have .8 already patched.

Is the seatbelt kext computer-specific? Not that Im afraid of learning while I go, but wouldnt it be so much easier just to keep begging files off you? :)

The other question is do these kind of errors happen with SL? Wouldn't it be so much simpler to install SL onto my sata drive and use a 10.4 (or .5 - just for the lack of hassle with USB) for a backup, dual boot? I truly think that the only reasons I was unable to boot to SL were: ide HD (also partitioned to MBR), and chameleon doesnt work well with my specs. Possibly also because of a kernel issue, I installed SL from Leo 10.5.4

I dont know, just throwing stuff out there. Im not trying to degrade what you've already done for me punk_zappa, its just that I think I've reformatted, repartitioned and reinstalled over 20 times in the last two weeks. Dont get me wrong, I've gotten real good at selecting the right installer options, but it is becoming tedious to go everynight "Yeah, now thats working... Ill just install this... Damn, corrupt. Unable to even get past the darwin screen... Well, I'll reinstall and start over again tomorrow", ad-infinitum (seemingly).

Thoughts?

download Andy's latest 9.8 kernel, check the New releases section. It wil fix your problems... it should update your kernel and your seatbelt. so youll be good.

Thanks for the input! Ill give it a try later tonight or tomorrow.

Edit: I think Ill get everything running (10.5.8) and then make a cloned copy of the drive; the installer is fast and all, but its still no fun to reinstall over and over (as well as patch and update). With the amount of screwups I've managed to pull off, I think this is a good idea. :)

Hey xXrkidXx

I installed the kernel, and I thank you for that advice. My installers no longer crash, I was actually able to install! The issue with USB still exists though, in that plugged in usb sticks and drives arent accessible. Profiler says that they're not configured. I did Not install the patches with that kernel, just the kernel through terminal. I dont know how to install those patches, is what I mean to say.

Please help, just a little more.

Thanks for all your help, punk_zappa and xXrkidXx. I really appreciate it. I now have a working, fully functional 10.5.8 with all the bells and whistles. Even my usb bluetooth works! I was able to find the kext I needed for usb. Hopefully I dont have to reinstall for quite a while, but if I do, I've backed up all the kexts Ive found to work. Once again, thank you. See you soon for help with snow leopard? :)

Info for anyone who needs it: I used the modified IOUSBFamily from slice.

Glad to be of help. Remember, we are dealing with a hack here so there are things that are simply mind boggling.

I am not planning on installing SL until next week when I get hold of a copy. I am actually buying one.:)

I plan on testing it first, other than the fact that "its the newest", I havent heard of any particluar reasons to do the upgrade- my main reason for upgrading is the hope of more OOB compatibility... and because its the newest. :)

I actually own a iMac G5 with a real, bought and well used copy of leopard. Snow wont install because its a ppc (damnit). If I get snow working on my hack, and if I actually end up using it / liking it; I will (believe it or not) buy a copy of it as well.

May as well close this post now, go back to my endless (seeming) reading on SL installation. Talk to you guys soon.
