View Full Version : Is your netbook warm under OSX? My samsung N120 is... any clue how to make it cooler?

I've installed Iatkos v7 10.5.7 + software updates to 10.5.8.

In the installer, I use:
-Speedstep
-NTFS-3G
-VoodooPS2

The rest is left on defaults... except I use cpus=1 in my boot.plist.

During use, I find my netbook very warm compared to when I run it under XP. I detailed this in the last post of my thread on installing Iatkos. Can anyone comment on this? People that have netbooks. I mean, I can see it being cooler with a bigger 15'' laptop for instance, the enclosure being bigger and heat dissipation better.

Any comment on the thermal signature of your netbook under OSX? Or any way to configure it to reduce heat?

Honestly, I find people to be overly enthusiastic when they install OSX on their netbooks... they say the experience is 'perfect' etc. Let's face it it'll only be perfect when Apple decides OSX can be installed on any hardware. Although I'm very thankful to the people who adapt kexts etc. to make it work, there's lots of work to be done in terms of standardizing the experience. In the meantime, one must compare in order to qualify the experience. It's like back in the days, when I used to play with overclocking my P3, you'd go to OC forums and everyone would reach such high frequency and the experience was 'perfect' - yeah using watercooling and peltiers and the like before you'd get a blue screen of death opeing MS word... let's be realistic.

Thank you

Quote from my other post:

-Heat: under XP, after 2 hours of a movie playback (streaming) for instance, the netbook is cool, slightly warm on the left side with some warm air coming from the side of the case... but I'm surprised how cool it remains. Under OSX, both the left and the right side, on each side of the trackpad, and the bottom, are really warm, to the point of making it uncomfortable on my lap or when I carry the computer around. The difference is considerable to the point I almost feel I could slide off the stickers at right side of the trackpad with a finger because the glue underneath it is warm. I mean the laptop works well and doesn't seem to suffer from this, the CPU reaches 50C under load and that's nothing compared to the 90C it can withstand but the computer becomes really warm. I haven't tried reinstalling without speedstep at this point. I wonder if people are getting similar results... If someone has an NC10 or N120 I'd like to know if you find it warm or not...p.s. To be noted: I replaced the Atheros wifi with a BCM94321MC - so this can alter the thermal signature too since as far as I'm concerned, wifi cards in general produce lots of heat...
