My Asus EeePC 1000HE and how I installed OS X on it.

Installing OS X on a Asus EeePC 1000HE




The beginning:

I wanted a Netbook that would run OS X without problems, and was
easy to make into an Hackintosh, I also wanted "Quality" so I
decided to go with Asus, and spent a few days Googling everything
I could find out about Netbook Hackintoshes, I then tried to find
a new one for sale, but it seams like most of the Asus Netbooks
that are known to work and that also have guides, seam to have
been discontinued.

When I had a chance to buy an new Asus EeePC 1000HE, I quickly
snapped it up, at the time however, I did not know about the
wireless issue or that the FN keys may not work, if I had I
might have chosen differently.


I started with this guide

and refined it for my own use, the Video and Bluetooth KEXTs
come from that post.



Stuff you will need:

(1) Retail OS X DVD
(2) 8GB or larger Thumb drive
(3) Hackintosh or Mac to prepare the Thumb drive,
or use "Empire EFI v1.085 for Intel Atom"
to start the install
(4) NetbookBootMaker and NetbookInstaller
(5) The 1000HE KEXTs
(6) DSDT

The Install, Part 1:

Start the "Disk Utility" put the "Snow Leopard DVD" into
the Mac or Hackintoshe's DVD drive and wait for it to show
up in "Disk Utility", then click on the "Snow Leopard DVD"
and then click New Image at the top, save were ever you
want, and wait, it may take an half hour.

Now lets format your thumb drive, plug the thumb drive
into your Mac or Hackintosh and and wait for it to show
up in "Disk Utility", then click on the thumb drive
and then "Partition" near the top,

under "Volume Scheme" click on "Current" and select
"1 Partition" near the bottom click on "Options" and
select "GUID Partition Table" now over at the side
near the top for "Format" select "Mac OS Extended (journaled)"
and for "Name" what ever you want.

Now lets restore the "Snow Leopard DVD" to the thumb drive,

select the "Snow Leopard DVD" DMG file then click on "Images"
up at the top, and then "Scan for Image Restore" wait for
that to finish, then click on the thumb drive, in
"Disk Utility", then click on "Restore" near the top, then
drag the "Snow Leopard DVD" DMG file to "Source" and then
drag the thumb drive to the "Destination" and click "Restore"
near the bottom, and again wait up to an half hour for
it to finish.

Now download and install NetbookBootMaker and install to
your freshly made OS X install thumb drive, you can get
NetbookBootMaker over at

Netbook-Installer (http://code.google.com/p/netbook-installer/)


The Install, Part 2:

Now lets boot the netbook with the thumb drive, or
"Empire EFI v1.085 for Intel Atom", and install, you
press ESC at boot to select the boot menu.

"NetbookBootMaker" will locking up during the install
but thats OK, it will finish installing OS X before
it gets to that point.

When installing OS X with "NetbookBootMaker", click on
"Window" and "Installer Log" to view the LOG file, set to
"Show all Logs" when log file endlessly shows the same error
about ramdisk, like this

./postinstall: cp: /Volumes/ramdisk/dsdt/latest_dsdl.dsl: No such file or directory

go to "Mac OS X Installer" and select "Quit Mac OS X Installer"
and then "Restart", leave the "OS X install Thumb drive"
plugged in

Boot again with the "Thumb Drive", or "Empire EFI v1.085 for Intel Atom",
keep pressing "TAB" until you can select your internal hard drive and
then boot, booting may take a few minutes

After you are at the desktop, then install "NetbookInstaller"
selecting only "Install Chameleon 2 NBI" and "Install General Extensions"

This is enough to boot, but no sound, no acceleration, no Ethernet
and bluetooth messes up.

Installing KEXTs:

KEXTs you will need


(1) AppleIntelGMA950.kext ----------------This is for your Video
(2) AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext ----This is for your Video
(3) AttansicL1eEthernet.kext---------------This is for your Ethernet
(4) IOBluetoothfamily.kext-----------------This is for your BlueTooth
(5) OpenHaltRestart.kext------------------ This replaces OSXRestart.kext
(6) VoodooHDA.kext---------------------- This is for you sound


Place the KEXTs into "/Extra/GeneralExtensions", remove "OSXRestart.kext"
then run "UpdateExtra", the Shoe program that's in "/Extra".

With "VoodooHDA.kext" you should also install "VoodooHDA.prefPane"
just double click "VoodooHDA.prefPane" to instal.


DSDT:

Or just use mine, there are two DSDT files, one is for systems
with 1GB of memory installed, and another is for systems with
2GB of memory installed, you have to use the correct DSDT.

You place the correct DSDT into "/Extra" and remove the "1201N.DSDT.aml" file


Update to 10.6.4:

This is how I updated mine.

The first thing I did was get the updated Netbookinstaller
for 10.6.4 from

I installed Netbookinstaller for 10.6.4 first, selecting only
"Install Chameleon 2 NBI" and "Install General Extensions" then
with out restarting or shutting down, download and install all
updates, let it restart, and press "TAB" a few times at boot
until you see a command line, and then type in "recovery=y",
once at the desktop reinstall "Netbookinstaller for 10.6.4",
select only "Install Chameleon 2 NBI" and "Install General Extensions"

Now go to your /Extra and remove "1201N.DSDT.aml" if you are using
a DSDT.aml for you own laptop, Netbookinstaller always seams to put
"1201N.DSDT.aml" in /Extra.

Replace the com.apple.Boot.plist with a backup of your own customized
version, because Netbookinstaller always replaces it.

Put the Asus 1000HE KEXTs into "GeneralExtensions"


(1) AppleIntelGMA950.kext ----------------This is for your Video
(2) AppleIntelIntegratedFramebuffer.kext ----This is for your Video
(3) AttansicL1eEthernet.kext---------------This is for your Ethernet
(4) IOBluetoothfamily.kext-----------------This is for your BlueTooth

Place the KEXTS into "/Extra/GeneralExtensions", remove "OSXRestart.kext",
then run "UpdateExtra", the Shoe program that's in "/Extra".

With "VoodooHDA.kext" you should also install "VoodooHDA.prefPane"
just double click "VoodooHDA.prefPane" to instal.


Notes:

I was able to start the install with "Empire EFI v1.085
for Intel Atom" so that may help if you don't have access
to a Mac or Hackintosh, I did not finish the install
with "Empire EFI v1.085 for Intel Atom" as I had already
installed using a different method listed above.

The FN keys don't work, or at least on mine they don't.

Wireless

The Asus EeePC 1000HE comes with one of two, Mini PCI
Express wireless network cards, the "Atheros 9280" and
AW-NE766, both will work, but the AW-NE766 requires you
to download the "RaLink RT2860" drivers for Mac, and has
an ugly launch program that pops up on every reboot.

There is no easy way to replace the Mini PCI Express
wireless network card on the Asus EeePC 1000HE, the
netbook has to be completely disassembled, and the
RaLink drivers are just annoying enough to make you
want to try.

Also most newer Asus EeePC 1000HE came with the
"RaLink RT2860".

If you are unfortunate enough to have the Ralink
wireless card, you can get the drivers at

I replaced my Mini PCI Express wireless network card
with

Apple part no. : 020-4894-A

Wireless fails to auto-reconnect

After I replaced the "RaLink RT2860" with the Apple Mini PCI Express
wireless network card, I found that it would connect and work, but on
reboot it failed to auto-reconnect, I Goggled the problem, and found
that's a common problem even for real Macs, here is how to fix

(1) Run “System Preferences" go to "Network" and delete all your Networks.
(2) Run “Keychain Access” delete all your networking related keys (Wi-Fi)
(3) Shutdown and reboot.
(4) Set your networks back up

Some hints on disassembly

The keyboard has sticky tape on its back, that tape is very strong, very
slowly pry and allow the tapes adhesive to let-go or you will bend
your keyboard, and there is a void warranty sticker over one of the
screws you need to remove, I tried heating with an hair dryer to soften
it up, I got it so hot I could not touch the netbook's heat spreader, the
sticker still tore.

BIOS

Update the Bios first, before you remove Windows or you
will have to find a thumbdrive that works with the built
in Bios update program, and format it to "FAT" not "FAT32",
to do that, use a small thumbdrive 2GB or under, and rename
the BIOS file to 1000HE.ROM

It might also be a good idea to download "SIW" or "System
Information for Windows" buy its full name, and use it
to make a system report and save that system report in
a safe place for later before you remove Windows.

Dual Booting:

I cheated, I used a patched Boot Camp, here is what I did.

I installed OS X, then ran the patched Boot Camp, and made
a partition for Windows 7 using Boot Camp, I gave OS X most
of the hard drives storage space, you will see why later,
and then restarted and installed Windows 7, letting Windows
7 format the partition that Boot Camp made for Windows.

When the Windows 7 install was done, I then booted back into
OS X using the Thumb Drive that I installed OS X from, hit
"TAB" until you can select your internal hard drive, I then
reinstalled Netbookinstaller and only selected
"Install Chameleon 2 NBI" and "Install General Extensions".

I then ran "Disk Utility" and resized the OS X partition, giving
Windows and OS X equal amounts of hard drive space, but leaving
free space between them.

I then used "Disk Utility" to turn that free space into a FAT32
partition.

I then restart the computer without the Thumb Drive and it starts
Windows 7, once Windows 7 has loaded I find and download
"EasyBCD 2.0 Beta - Build 100" or newer and install.

Now with EasyBCD setup, the Windows bootloader will let you
choose between OS X and Windows 7


Backing up your hard drive

If you have taken the time to do a dual boot and all the updates and
so on, it most likely took a long time, so you might want to make a
backup copy of your entire drive, there are a number of ways to do
that but one of the most simple is to buy an external hard drive that's
the same size or bigger, than the hard drive you want to back up, and
use EaseUs Disk Copy, its free and simple to use, its a boot CD that
you use to start your computer with and then just select a source
and destination and it starts making a copy, and it works just fine
with USB drives, you can get it at the link below

Here are the files I used, I also included a "com.apple.Boot.plist" thats
trimmed down to the bare necessities, just make sure you use the correct
DSDT for the amount of memory you have

You are welcome, one of the biggest reasons I make guides like this is for
later on in the future I may have forgot, or need to know something
and it helps having a reference ;) LOL

I to had mixed feelings about upgrading, and decided to make a
backup of my entire hard drive first, but it went well and I did not
have problems, at least that I remember.

When upgrading just make sure to use the NetbookInstaller made
for 10.6.4, and keep that install thumb drive in a safe place, it can
help later on if you have problems

I looked in my "/Extra/GeneralExtensions" under 10.6.4 and I was using
"OpenHaltRestart.kext" and then I checked out 10.6.1, I booted from that
backup I made with "EaseUs Disk Copy", I had not updated it yet so it still
had 10.6.1 on it, and with 10.6.1 I was also using "OpenHaltRestart.kext".


I had replaced "OSXRestart.kext" with "OpenHaltRestart.kext" in
"/Extra/GeneralExtensions" and forgot

"SleepEnabler.kext" is not even on mine, and I don't think that it
was installed on mine, but it may cause problems, and on another
forum, someone with an 1000HE had problems getting sleep to
work with "SleepEnabler.kext" installed.

If its causing problems try removing it.

Your guide works like a charm thank you. It is pretty straight forward than some other methods I had tried before.
The temperatures for CPU were pretty high, hence the fan noise. To fix that, I also used NullCPUPowerManagement.kext as well. But that stuffed up deep sleep so I had to use the sleepenabler.kext too. They seemed to complement each other just fine. At some stage I chucked in the Voodoopowermini.kext but that spoiled the harmony a bit so I gave that a miss.
Just a heads up for everyone.. If you do a memory upgrade make sure it's 100% compatible, I learned the hard way. Took me 2 weeks and numerous reboots due to various KP which stopped after reverting back to original RAM yesterday?!. A working RAM doesn't mean compatible! I found the original 1GB is just fine for everyday use anyways. Thanks again...

I had difficulty with 10.6.4 - followed your guide using the newest Netbookinstaller. The result was booting through almost to the desktop. Freezes right at the desktop before the Dock appears. I did not update DSDT file. I only updated kext using Kext Helper (the updater from /Extra didn't work for me either)

I have a 10.6.1 with working ethernet, sound, bluetooth. Works great. Maybe I should just be happy, but if you have a suggestion to get to 10.6.4, I'd appreciate it.

(1) Don't use "Kext Helper" as its most likely installing KEXT into
"/System/Library/Extensions/" and that's not were you want then,
ONLY add and remove from "/Extra/GeneralExtensions" and then
run "UpdateExtra"

(2) The DSDT that Netbookinstaller installs is for another netbook,
so you need to replace it, ether with one you made, or from someone
else who made one for the 1000HE


"UpdateExtra" Looks at the files in "/Extra/GeneralExtensions" and
finds all the "dependencies" of the files in "/Extra/GeneralExtensions",
and then makes a "Extensions.mkext" containing both the files
from "/Extra/GeneralExtensions" and the "dependencies", the
"dependencies" are KEXTs from "/System/Library/Extensions/"
that are needed by KEXTs in "/Extra/GeneralExtensions"

Help! Flawless install on my 1000HE ... until I tried the section on updating to 10.6.4.

I ran the updated netbook installer and the 10.6.4 update (before restarting) - no problem.

On restart, the Tab key does not get me to the Command Line but boots past onto a grey screen with a mac laptop icon and and endlessly spinning circle below.

Is there any other way to get to the Command Line for the "recovery=y" trick??

It occasionally finds networks, but when I enter my password (and before you ask, yes it's the right password, I'm positive) it briefly tries to connect, then says, "Connection timeout." The network has WPA security. I'm about to throw all my hard work against the wall.

My 1000HE has the Atheros 9280, as indicated by About This Mac..., it's enabled in BIOS, I've tried going into BIOS and disabling/enabling it, and I've turned off Quick Boot. I used your DSDT table with your com.apple.Boot.plist and everything on the computer is working flawlessly, including Ethernet, sound and all. (Though I didn't install Bluetooth because I never use it).

Please, somebody help me. I've done the installation twice already and I just don't know what to do. Wireless worked in both Windows XP and Ubuntu. I got the hard part done! I upgraded to 10.6.4 with no kernel panics! Why won't my wifi work with the one card it's supposed to work with?!

I had problems also, mine would connect, and even get on the net, but
just suddenly drop connection at random times, BTW I was never able to
fix that, I ended up swapping out wireless cards - huge pain in the butt -
but I had the "RaLink RT2860" not the "Atheros 9280", I do kinda think I
remember a modified KEXT for the "Atheros 9280" but am not sure were
it is, I will have to search for it, and I only faintly remember it, or think I
remember it, I will look this afternoon for you to see if I can find it,
no guarantees

OK, so I may have uncovered a bit of the problem, it turns out that my Airport is assigned to en0 and Ethernet is en1, which is backwards as far as I can tell. On bootup I kept getting something like:

Airport: Link down on en0

I'm trying to reassign ethernet to en0 and airport to en1, but I'm having some issues. Any input anyone?

Oh, and one more thing, will1384, should I update my BIOS to help solve this problem? I think the current version is 0501. The newest on the site is BIOS 1104 (after I narrow it down to Windows XP for my OS). What's the best way to go about updating my BIOS? I'm a little unclear with regard to the USB drive process. Is there a good guide for updating the BIOS in hackintoshes?

It might be a good idea to update the BIOS,

As far as making the BIOS update thumb drive under OS X, I dont know,
OS X seams to only use FAT32, I just tried with a 2GB thumb drive and
Disk Utility, and its FAT32.

I have not yet found any modified wireless KEXT for the 1000he

I succeeded in updating the BIOS to version 1104 and still no luck, even after I reinstalled Snow Leopard for the 3rd time. Some thoughts:

-I am using a 10.6.3 DVD. Could this be the problem? I'm using the newest NBI available from Meklort's website (http://www.meklort.com/?p=262).
-The wifi did work for a very brief time - the very first time I ever booted from the SL USB drive and the 1000HE's HDD hadn't yet been partitioned. At that time, I still had the option of turning off Boot Booster, which I understand is not related to the BIOS as much as it's related to the recovery partition that comes on the 1000HE along with Windows XP. After I partitioned the entire drive and installed SL (and subsequently lost wifi), the Boot Booster option went away; all I have now is Quick Boot and Quiet Boot. These are both disabled, btw.
-I took the battery out and the wireless module sticker says: "AW-NE771" which, as far as I've read, is the supported card for this computer. Like I said before, under About This Mac... the installed wireless card is Atheros 9280. I'm really at my wit's end about this.

In the meantime, I'm going to make an Ubuntu live drive and boot from that to see if the wifi card works with Ubuntu (it did when I booted into Ubuntu with my intact Windows XP install). This could possibly indicate whether my particular wifi functionality is tied to that recovery partition from the original install. Is there anyone out there with similar problems? Any input?

Wireless fails to auto-reconnect

After I replaced the "RaLink RT2860" with the Apple Mini PCI Express
wireless network card, I found that it would connect and work, but on
reboot it failed to auto-reconnect, I Goggled the problem, and found
that's a common problem even for real Macs, here is how to fix

(1) Run “System Preferences" go to "Network" and delete all your Networks.
(2) Run “Keychain Access” delete all your networking related keys (Wi-Fi)
(3) Shutdown and reboot.
(4) Set your networks back up

The Apple wireless card I used works perfect, just like it was in a real
mac, and everything worked out perfect, other than having to re-setup
my networking, but that's easy and only has to be done once, the hard
part is disassembling and reassembling the netbook, go slow, and
remember that they sometimes double-tape the keyboard on so that
its really hard to remove.

I've got my 1000HE updated to 10.6.4, and all works fine, except after every reboot, wifi no longer works. To fix, I have to go to bios and disable then enable wlan again every time I quit Mac OS X. Has anyone figured out how to fix this? My wirless card is AW-NE771.

Thanks so much for this guide. I followed it pretty much exactly, and now I've got SL running at 10.6.4 almost perfectly. I do have a few issues remaining, though, and I was wondering if anyone here could help me out (a few hours of googling didn't really come up with any solutions.)

1.) When I try to install the Voodoo prefpane, it tells me that it "Can't get registry-entry path." As far as I know, the VoodooHDA.kext is installed properly into General/Extensions, so I'm not sure what else I should be doing. I had the issue briefly while I was still at 10.6.0, but somehow got it to work then—not having so much luck now. Any ideas?

2.) Every once in a while the netbook will freeze coming out of sleep. This seems to mostly happen when it's been sleeping for a while, so my guess would be that it happens when the computer itself goes to sleep, not just the display. I could probably get around this by setting the computer to never sleep if necessary, but I'd prefer not to do that for obvious reasons.

The temperatures for CPU were pretty high, hence the fan noise. To fix that, I also used NullCPUPowerManagement.kext as well. But that stuffed up deep sleep so I had to use the sleepenabler.kext too. One other thing: for those who are having issues with the RaLink driver (it won't recognize your device, etc.), I finally solved my problem by downloading the driver for RT2870, instead of RT2860, which is compatible with 10.6. It's certainly an ugly driver, and I'm having trouble connecting it to WEP2 encoded routers, but at least I finally got wireless working—and without having to void my warranty too!

One other suggestion about the guide: for people like me who are really new to this, your language in the kext and dsdt section was a little confusing. It might be better to say that we should "place" the kexts into the general/extension folder, and then afterwards to "install" them by running UpdateExtra—that way we won't be googling around trying to find out how to install kexts, and then reading stuff that tells us to use terminal commands to install them into System/Library/Extensions, and then being confused when they don't work, and so forth. I don't know who would make that mistake, but it seems plausible to me... ;)

Similarly with the dsdt section, if you said to "place" it into the general folder, and then to "install" it by rebooting, I think that might allay some confusion.

I have always had sleep trouble on all my Windows PCs, and tend to not
use it, I did let the netbook sleep a few times, and at least once I had
to press a few keys and I think ESC a few times and it took a long time
to wake

I had also had that happen, but my wireless mouse still worked, so it

I have given up on netbook/laptop trackpads, I always use a mouse, but
I do wish I had a fix for it, again I believe its a KEXT issue

Success! I finally got it to work by re-running Netbook-Installer and then re-installing the kexts afterward. I also used the updated VoodooHDA files from the link that you provided. I don't know what was wrong before, but it's good to know that a reset might be able to solve my problems (now and in the future). I think that solves all biggest issues—the 1000HE seems to be running with ~95% of the functionality of my MacBook Pro, and I can live with that considering how much the OSx86 solution cost (and how much I learned about the innerworkings of OS X!).

For the booting issue i was having the same thing. I cloned the ssd to another hard drive. Then installed the other hard drive and It would boot when i have the thumb drive attach only. So i booted and reinstalled Chameleon 2 NBI bootloader only checked and the other options not checked and it worked again.

I ran the same 10.6.0 then updated to 10.6.4. I have the aw-ne771. Most of the times if I let it boot regular without me pressing no keys it boots and with no wifi. I found out if I press f2 when it boots and gets into the bios menu and exit without saving wifi appears. To avoid doing that alll the time i put it to sleep. Try this website (http://minhdanh2002.blogspot.com/2010/10/dual-booting-mac-os-x-1064-and-windows.html) and download it kexts and install kext helper and install the kexts using that. Got the battery to show up normal showing real hours left. At times 12 hours and yes I have used it 10 hours before it dies lol.

i found that i had to move the kext files in, run the UpdateExtra, reboot, verify sound was working by emptying something in trash, then install the preference pane for the sound - no error anymore...

For me, I was able to successfully upgrade from 10.6.0 to 10.6.4 and everything works (wireless, sleep, sound, booting from internal hard disk, etc.) However, I am unhappy with 10.6.4 because it seems to have introduced some very unstable network connections. When I launch Terminal and do "ping google.com," I get some horrible latencies. When I was on 10.6.0, the network was very responsive.

Therefore, I am doing the install over and am sticking with 10.6.0 (or 10.6.1 if there are no network issues).

Follow-up:
I have the AW-NE766 wireless card (listed as Atheros in OS X). I stayed with 10.6.1 because 10.6.2 and 10.6.4 caused terrible ping latency times (800 milliseconds) while 10.6.0 and 10.6.1 had no major wireless issues (latencies of 48 milliseconds).

When the laptop wakes up from sleep, it usually doesn't auto-connect to the wireless network, but it's not a big deal because I can just go up to the AirPort icon in the menubar, turn off wireless, and turn it back on; the laptop will connect to my previous base station (I'm using a WEP password).

For people having issues with the strange error after double-clicking on VoodooHDA.prefPane, make sure to reboot first to have OS X load the VoodooHDA.kext extension, then install the prefPane.

I used NetbookInstaller 0.8.3 (NOT anything newer) as that was appropriate for 10.6.0 and 10.6.1.

I had a lot of trouble getting Windows 7 to dual boot with OS X. I do finally have it working with the Chameleon 2.0-RC3 boot loader (and not EasyBCD).


I then used "Disk Utility" to turn that free space into a FAT32
partition.

I then restart the computer without the Thumb Drive and it starts
Windows 7, once Windows 7 has loaded I find and download
"EasyBCD 2.0 Beta - Build 100" or newer and install.
The part about "I then restart the computer without the Thumb Drive and it starts Windows 7" did not work for me at all. Windows 7 refused to boot, and I kept getting an "0xc00000e" error. I was able to fix this by following Post #5 from this thread (http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/dual-booting/13834-windows-7-0xc000000e-boot-error.html). If I can remember the steps correctly, here's what I did:


Boot netbook with bootable Win7 USB thumb drive.
Click on "Repair"
Open a Command Prompt. Type the following commands:

diskpart
list drives (the main hard drive was shown as drive 0)
select drive 0
list partitions (partition 4 was the Win7 partition in my setup)
select partition 4
active


Without closing Command Prompt, alt-tab to the main Repair window.
Start the repair. It will fix the boot error. But don't press "OK" because it will force a restart.
Alt-tab back to Command Prompt. Use the same commands as above for diskpart except make the OS X partition active.
Alt-tab back to the Repair window and click "OK" to have it restart.
Windows 7 now correctly boots after choosing it from Chameleon boot loader. Installation of EasyBCD wasn't necessary.

Windows XP
I tried for a long time to install XP, but it never worked. I slipstreamed SATA drivers and all of that, but it never finished installing or would just blue screen. The Windows 7 DVD and USB drive eventually worked.

USB Drives used for the install of OS X and Win7
These two thumb drives were essential in fixing problems. It's also much faster to install Windows 7 from USB sticks.


Small USB drive with Chameleon Bootloader (512 MB)
Follow mechdrew's initial instructions (http://osx.mechdrew.com/guides/nbi2.shtml) to write the NBI_083F image to a USB drive. This drive always worked when everything else failed (OS X wouldn't boot, Win7 wouldn't boot, WinXP wouldn't boot).
Large USB drive for bootable Win7 install (16 GB)
I wasted a lot of time re-installing Win7 from DVD. I eventually found these bulletproof instructions for making a bootable USB drive (http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-install-windows-7vista-from-usb-drive-detailed-100-working-guide/) from the Win7 DVD. (Remember, you must use diskpart from Vista or Win7 as the XP version won't recognize USB drives.)


Extra KEXTS
I tried to use some extra KEXTS from Minh Danh (http://minhdanh2002.blogspot.com/2010/10/dual-booting-mac-os-x-1064-and-windows.html).


VoodooBattery.kext: fixes the estimated battery time display.
VoodooSDHC.kext: allows the SD slot to work (I didn't test it though).
VoodooPower.kext and VoodooPowerMini.kext: these kept getting umounted during the verbose boot, so I eventually did not include them in GeneralExtensions.


Function Keys

When I had a chance to buy an new Asus EeePC 1000HE, I quickly
snapped it up, at the time however, I did not know about the
wireless issue or that the FN keys may not work, if I had I
might have chosen differently.

The function keys do work on my 1000HE Hackintosh. For example, I can use F9, F10, and F11 for the Expose keys. Only some of the blue "Fn" keys work. I can press Fn-F5 and Fn-F6 to lower and increase screen brightness. I can press Fn to access the PgUp, PgDn, Home, and End functions. The Fn keys for volume control do not work. You can use Keyboard Maestro (free trial) (http://www.keyboardmaestro.com/main/) to map Ctrl-F10,F11,F12 to Mute, Volume Down, and Volume Up, and it works very nicely.

Final Thoughts
So I have OS X 10.6.1 and Windows 7 working really well on my Asus 1000HE (firmware 1104). It took a huge amount of time, and I was only able to do it because of the extra time from Christmas break. I was lucky in that the built-in wireless card is interfacing well with OS X: it reconnects during startup but after waking up from sleep, I have to "Turn Aiport Off" and then "Turn Airport On" for it to connect to WiFi (using a WEP password because I have an old clamshell iBook on my network that can only connect by WEP). Thanks again to will1384, the makers of NetbookInstaller, and the Dell Mini community for sharing all of their knowledge in getting this to work! :-*

I installed OSX first, partitioned the drive with patched Bootcamp, performed post installations and then installed Win7 using an 8Gb USB stick. I also prepared an SD card which contains a Chameleon bootloader. I just have to reinstall Chameleon after completing the Win7 installation by booting back to OSX with the SD card. After reinstalling Chameleon I then restarted with the Win7 USB stick and used the command prompt to set OSX partition as active. Btw, you can also do this when inside the Windows 7 desktop by typing "diskpart" in the search bar. Here is the screen shot:

I recently updated my Asus 1000he to 10.6.3, I done some research before doing this and noticed that I needed to delete the sleepenabler.kext before rebooting. I did this and restarted the machine and now I get a kernal panic on the same sleepenabler.kext.

I cannot boot in as single user or any other option. I have tried to insert the mounted image of SL 10.6 and tried install netbootinstaller again by getting the new sleepenabler.kext and adding it into the extensions folder for some reason the kernal still panics for the same kext.

I would like to know if there is anyway of installing the kext or deleting the kext. I have done a google search and it is telling me to do it via terminal but as I try this in the installer screen it comes up as Bash 80x297 and cannot read any commands.

PLEASE HELP as i know after installing the kext again everything will be fine.

I have 2GB ram (so I used the 2 GB dsts file) and I have the Asus 1000HEB not the 1000HE... Could that be the problem?

The computer starts great when I boot from the USB drive and then select the hard drive. How can I get this working without having to use the USB drive?

I have successfully updated to 10.6.7 following this thread's instructions. After the initial Snow Leopard installation, I download and installed the 10.6.4 Combo Update (Followed the guide procedures) and then dowloaded and installed the 10.6.7 Combo Update (Same as 10.6.4). I used the updated NetbookInstaller that was provided for 10.6.4 to install 10.6.7. In order to boot in "recovery=y" I had to hold the SHIFT button after restart, TAB didn't work for me. Thanks for the creating this thread!

I have successfully updated to 10.6.7 following this thread's instructions. After the initial Snow Leopard installation, I download and installed the 10.6.4 Combo Update (Followed the guide procedures) and then dowloaded and installed the 10.6.7 Combo Update (Same as 10.6.4). I used the updated NetbookInstaller that was provided for 10.6.4 to install 10.6.7. In order to boot in "recovery=y" I had to hold the SHIFT button after restart, TAB didn't work for me. Thanks for the creating this thread!


I can confirm that it works following these directions as well.

I was hitting both shift and tab to be safe.

Also, I have determined that the hissing noise that many are complaining about is due to the input gain in the voodoo preferences. Turn it down, and your set. This gets reset everytime you reboot your computer though.

Last I have had issues since 10.6.1 (or 6.0 not sure at this point) with sleep.... goes into panic, and says something about the ralink driver, so I am just going to look into replacing the wifi card with one that supports airport, seems like it would be a lot easier.
Just glad that I can use xcode 3+ so I can begin learning how to develop for the iPhone (have some java/c experience). Can't afford a mac pro right now as a college student.

I can't thank the community here enough, and especially the OP for all the effort, detail, and help provide to make this as easy as possible for everyone with a 1000HE.

Well I hope I ain't bumping a thread that is completely dead since I jumped on this bandwagon rather late... for everyone that is having an issue with the hissing noise, I figured out a permanent fix. I am a n00b w/ hackintosh so it may not fix every single persons problems


Copy the voodoohda.kext from the general extensions folder, paste on desktop.
Right click, show package contents, open info.plist with a text editor (if you use xcode just add a string to mixer values called iGain with 0 as a value) and where you see the following

<key>iMix</key>
<string>30</string>
</dict>

Well just add a string to it, in the end it looks like this... essentially add any of the mixer names and the default value following this format.

<string>0</string>
<key>iMix</key>
<string>30</string>
</dict>
hit save
and magic.... paste it back in the general extensions folder over the old version, run the updateextensions, and reboot... hissing noise gone, everything works perfect so far audio wise.

If you have a ralink wireless n adapter... do whatever you can to get rid of it, just my advice. It causes random kernel panics on sleep, and does not support wpa enterprise, which is what my college uses and renders the netbook almost useless on campus. thank you for the idea of creating a shared partition though, I was about to just use ntfs-3g or whatever.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled the system twice and still can't get sound. I'm fully up and running then try installing the preference pane and get an error. This is at 10.6.7.

You must be missing a step somewhere along the line, if you follow to the T you won't have any issues!!

the only thing different is that i did not go to 10.6.4. i went from 10.6.1 to 10.6.7. i've done it 3 times now, following the guide. i'm sure i'm doing something wrong but i have no idea what.

Be patient, and it should ask for your password once at the begining, and once near its completion. This can take a while... like 5 minutes or so of it just turning the circle thing. Just wait till it tells you its done. Then hit ok, and finally install the preferences file by double clicking on it(you may have to restart, though I think after the update runs fine you don't- can't hurt).

I was impatient a few times, and had the same issue about installing the preferences, I just had to make sure that the updater completed, and then it would let me instal it without error.

The only issue I have is when I close the lid and re-open it I get a kernal panic, everytime! Any ideas on how to fix this?

great idea, but no go. i tried removing the vodoo preference pane with appzapper
and then followed your instructions. still didn't work. do you think i should try reinstalling everything?

followed the guide and had sound in 10.6.0. upgraded from 10.6.2 dmg, going through all steps again and had sound. upgraded to 10.6.7, followed all steps again and get the error message and no sound. any suggestions? i've just updated to the latest bios and will go through the whole process again, but would love some feedback.

Yeah....10.6.8 working....so far everything I need tests good. I'll need to play with it more....I followed this guide (thanks Will) to to install 10.6.3 and got everything working. Before upgrading, made a backup with both time machine & disk utility just in case anything FU'p. And I screwed up a few times before making backups - haha.

I went from 10.6.3 to 10.6.8 using the 10.6.8 ComboUpdate. And following this guide:

I'm not sure what the patched kernel does but it booted after following his instructions. I forgot to run NetbootInstaller (0.84.RC1) so it hung after reboot. Installed it after getting into recovery. I put back all of Will's kexts into /Extra/GeneralExtensions and launched the shoe program (UpdateExtra app)

The hardest thing to get working was sound - the VoodooHDA.kext was in /Extra/GE and I must have clicked UpdateExtra a million times but that didn't do anything. When clicking on VoodooHDA Pref Pane - it would give me an error too. So I knew sound wasn't right. What finally got sound working was just copying the whole VoodooHDA.kext into /System/Library/Extensions -- I know you are not supposed to do it that way but it worked.

Anyways it worked for me.....Good luck to you all

Hi Guys, maybe one of you can help me:

I got 10.6.7 in me 1000HE, and everything works, except sleep.
I've generated a custom DSDT, downloaded the kernel already patched with atom support, tried with nullintelcpm and sleepenabler, but no luck, I can get it to sleep.
The fan is also running all the time to full speed, but I guess that is related to not having the speedstep from the appleintelcpm

Does anyone know what can I do to fix this?

Hi, i am a noob fyi. How do i install 10.6.3 without a mac and without a dvd/cd rom? I tried the suggested Legacy EmpireEFI (converted into bootable USB) but it just stalled/hanged when i selected the 10.6.3 installer disc (also converted into bootable USB) at the EmpireEFI selection boot. I even tried using NBI ISO, it doesn't allows me to install with alot of kernel panics (of course the NBI is not written for 1000HE). Any suggestions>?

I don't have a Mac either, so I made a hackintosh in a VirtualBox (there's a great guide at lifehacker: http://lifehacker.com/5583650/run-mac-os-x-in-virtualbox-on-windows). Then I used myhack and netbookinstaller, and got the installation pendrive without problems. I even patched the osinstall so I could install without formatting the HD as GUID.
Try that, and if you have issues, post here and I'll try to help.

does your mic work using voodoohda with this netbook eeepc 1000he? Here mic doesn't work... speakers and headphones work, but not internal/external microphone. Anyone that patched applehda for this laptop already for its codec?
another thing it doesn't work is hibernation... does it work for you?

Mic works for me.

Hibernation is also causing me some issues, but I rarely do that, and with the crazy boot times, I don't think I'll be needing it too much. Maybe try the "SleepEnabler.kext" from prasys' blog post, mentioned above.

I discovered ethernet was also not working. I read into this a bit, and apparently it could have something to do with graphics (not sure how/why). I'm going to be looking into this some more.

My problems after upgrading to 10.6.8 combo update:

- mic is still not working and voodooprefpane is giving me an error (can't map memory i guess) ... omg when will we have a patched applehda?? should i do it by myself :) LOL

- sleep is not working (perhaps i need such sleepenabler, but before i didn't need it with 10.6.4)

- my airport card does not work any more (with 10.6.4 worked)... i need to give a look in IO802networkfamily kext inside plugins folder if there is my dev id of my airport card inside, perhaps something changed in newest 10.6.8 update. For the rest it went smooth! i even used original applegma950 (patched by netbookinstaller of course)

- i see an ethernet card named "build PCI ethernet" , but dunno if it works or not... will investigate more.

I'm using the VoodooHDA.kext from the OP.

I didn't need SleepEnabler.kext before 10.6.8, but I do now.

I'll get my extras up here so people can take a look. I'm really happy with the results of this.

i fixed the audio problem, now my mic works with voodoohda , sleep works with sleepenabler, but wifi doesn't work any more here :( it seems hardware is not recognized ... do you think it may a IOPCIFamily or ACPI problem? How to fix it in 10.6.8?
i have a 1390 wifi card inside, before updating it was working nicely! Any suggestion?
