Hi. I'm running the new 10.5.2 rev.2 install and I have some problems with graphics.
I selected the x1600 kext in the installer but I didn't get CI/CE or resolution switching.
This card worked flawlessly in Tiger and I tried using kexts from the rev.1 dvd, an old Natit from my 10.4.8 dvd but I can't get it to work.
When using the old Natit kext, the usual messages (-v at boot) showed up but still the same problems in Finder...
Anyone got a solution?
This is the first leo dvd that worked for me and it would be awesome with some graphics acceleration too :)
Thanks

I actually made it (partially) work using the manual install guide.
My only concern now is that I need the original ATIRadeonX1000.kext from the DVD and that damn install DVD wont mount in OSX... anyone else got that "problem"?
I need it to properly enable QE/CI...

I figured the update was included on the rev.2 dvd.. Is it not?
It won't show up in System Update.
When I tried to edit my (original) ATIRadeonX1000.kext to achieve CI/QE I got stuck at a blue screen when loginwindow is loaded.

yeah I tried with the graphics update but still the same...light blue screen with no cursor or anything...
Shift+Ctrl+Eject didn't do anything either..
I tried this with a fresh reinstall of Leopard as well, but still no go.
Thanks anyway
Any more suggestions?
I'd really appreciate it
edit: I did of course follow the guide and modified the files this time too..

The 10.5.2 DVD doesn't install ATINDRV.kext. I uploaded the modified kexts from the Leopard Graphics Update, had to use rapidshare 'cuase of the 1 KB limit for attachments. Here's the link:
http://rapidshare.com/files/99307216/ATI_X1600_Leopard_GraphicsUpdate.dmg.html
Copy the files from the .dmg in /System/Library/Extensions, open Terminal and enter the following commands (you can also use copy/paste):
sudo -s (password)
chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions && chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions
diskutil repairpermissions /
After this delete /System/Library/Extensions.mkext and reboot.

Sweet!
I tried with an old ATINDRV.kext from Tiger but didn't get it working. I'll try your files as soon as I get home from work.
Are they patched for 0x71c2?
edit: I'm thinking about doing this on a fresh install. I'll install the original graphics update then copy your files, right?
Thanks alot!

Yep, they are patched for 71c2 but I preserved the old IDs, so they could run with other compatible cards.

well well, this didn't work either.. The loginwindow doesn't show.
I've really tried every singe combination of kexts for every system version along with all known modifications..
It's probably because of my RS482 mainboard with SB450 southbridge..
I'm gonna give the Leo4All a shot then go back to Tiger until I can try JaS's verison out, if he decides to add AMD support..

@naquaada: Did these kexts work for you in 10.5.2 rev2 or are you using rev1 or 10.5.1??
I switched to Leo4All but the problem did'nt go away. At least that release has working network shares... I really need the graphics to work. It's the only thing missing in my setup..
It seems alot of other 71c2 users on 10.5.2 are having similar problems.

Seems like it could be the graphics update that breaks the acceleration. http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=89961
I'll try to copy the files from a 10.5.2 disk or maybe even the 10.5.1 one.
I suppose the 10.4 kexts won't work 100% with this newer kernel, any thoughts?

hi there if this is anything like my x1650 256mb pcie card then, i use atinject.
silentmac

I use ATIinject too, it gives me the right resolutions but not CI/QE.
When I tried the kexts from 10.5.1 I get CI/QE but with those stange black menus..
If you have a working x1650 in 10.5.x, please tell me what install DVD you used, if you applied the graphics update 1.0, and what files you altered.
I tried to use the IONDRVSupport from 10.5.1 too, but then all I get is a blue screen with cursor..

hi there silentmac, i use 10.5.2 rev 1(cant get rev 2 to run, waiting for root). i did the install as normal, selected customize and selected x1600 kext although on rev 1 i dont think these get applied correctly. upon first boot i get error about kexts not installed correctly, at this point i do all software updates including graphics update 1.0 (if software update doesnt offer this get it from mac update site and install) restart. at this point i copy any kexts that were complained about (ie sound card usually) to the desktop and reinstall them using kext helper. then i copy 3 kexts that i hex edited for my card atinject, atindrv (make sure ATY_Wormy.kext is in plugins folder), ATIRadeonX1000.kext install using kext helper, reboot viola QE/CI res change (i use 1900 x 1200). others have tried using my kexts but resulted in kernal panics. this works for me i have done many reinstalls using the method above and works every time..sorry for the long diatrob.
hope this helps

Awesome!
It finally got it working!
I can swear I tried the same steps before..but...
I installed all the graphic kext's from 10.5.1 and got CI/QE with terrible tearing, then I installed the Graphics update and before I restarted I installed the my modified kexts.
BAM! Full CI/QE, DVI and everything.
Thanks alot for all the help and support Firewalk and naquaada. I was really starting to give up but you guy encuraged me to keep trying!
Now my Leo install is as complete as my Tiger setup 8-)
And I made a serious backup of my current working kexts.
Thanks again.

so is that with or without ATIinject, silentmac?
silentmac

It's with ATIinject.

ATIinject seems to be the key file for getting x1600 cards to work..

with the files naaquada provided, I get full QE/CI but no resolution switching. that's with *and* without ATIinject. also, there's incredible mouse tearing when scrolling, clicking etc.
EDIT: turns out that I do need ATIinject. for some reason I had atiinject and natitx1600 installed both (they seem to be the same thing). without atiinject, natitx1600 will take over, but it seems to fail more often.
EDIT2: with graphics mode specified in com.apple.Boot.plist, I get 1280*1024 and QE/CI. still mouse tearing, but I can live with that.

I had the same problem on my x1600 Pro. Messed around with it for days and days. Fixed it by buying a 8600GTS. It just worked.
Needed a new Video Card anyhow, but it's good to see when I throw it in a different PC, there is a way to get it to work!

Could someone who got this card working (with the 71c2 dev id) PLEASE post all their graphics-related kext files for me teo try? I have tried DOZENS of people's methods for getting this card to work but it never ever has. Also please note which install dvd you used, and whether or not you checked the option to install the card upon the OS install.
Thanks!
