Got a strange issue with my DVD/RW....the system sees it, but when I insert a disk to either burn or an audio cd to play in iTunes, iTunes hangs or if I am using Toast Titanium the disk will not burn..here is what is shown in system profiler without a disk inserted, because if one is system profiler hangs as well, below is what is shown in "about this Mac":

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH70N:

Firmware Revision: UGA0
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Generic Drive Support)
Profile Path: None
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RAM, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
Media: To show the available burn speeds, insert a disc and choose View > Refresh

Here is part of the code in the error message when iTunes hangs after trying to play an audio cd:

Date/Time: 2012-05-19 18:33:00 -0700
OS Version: 10.6.8 (Build 10K549)
Architecture: x86_64
Report Version: 7

Command: iTunes
Path: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes
Version: 10.6.1 (10.6.1)
Build Version: 1
Project Name: iTunes
Source Version: 10610701
Parent: launchd [100]

PID: 921
Event: hang
Duration: 5.92s (sampling started after 2 seconds)
Steps: 19 (100ms sampling interval)

Pageins: 0
Pageouts: 0

Process: iTunes [921]
Path: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes
UID: 501

I would put the entire thing in here, but it is quite long and I can't attach it because it is in the wrong format.

I did some research and it seems to have something to do with my chipset (Geforce7025/nForce 630a) I tried several different solutions, but the dvd drive still does not work properly. The system "sees" it, but every time I load a burned audio cd iTunes sees it, opens it and then hangs. Totally weird....I ordered an external USB dvd drive to see if this will work instead. If anyone has a similar chipset and has a working fix for it I would appreciate a heads up.

Thanks

It's not SATA, right? If that's the case then you are out of luck as (to my knowledge) OS X only supports burning with SATA drives.

It is a SATA drive..the problem is the SATA controller with Snow Leopard. I can use the drive to boot to, but can't use it when the OS is booted up. I decided to go with an external USB LG Super Multi Drive and all is well. Sometimes things just don't work, so you work around the issue, which I did successfully.
Thanks for your reply.
