Isn't it the same chip as the later 8800s? If so surely it would work?

Despite the new 9000-series product line, the GeForce 9600 GT relies on the same core architecture as the new GeForce 8800 GT chip from earlier this year. If you ask Nvidia, you'll get a different story, but our hunch is that the chip graduated to a new number at least partly because ATI recently bumped its own chips up from the 2000 series to the 3000 series last November, despite no major update to the processing core. Keeping up with the Joneses aside, the GeForce 9600 GT might as well be a new card for the vast improvement it brings at its price point compared with the GeForce 8600 GT from last year.

All GeForce 8800 G80 Cards work. The new G92 based GTS and GT will not work! Please do not ask questions about if any 8x00 Series cards apart from the 8800 Series work in this post, simply the answer is no... if/when they do, I will be sure to update my post, and the easy-installer with the required files. When new 8x00 Series NVinject kext versions are released the easy installer will be updated, new fixes will be added too when/if available, and I have the time! This thread is only for support with regards to the working 8800 Series cards at the moment (8800 GTS, GTX). Thank you.
Wont be supported because of the chipset. As of now, OS X only supports up to the G92 chipsets, these are G94's.you can read all about it here

wasn´t this an old toppic? i remember when i got my 8600 GT and nvidia 8xxx was not supported yet.
then the project got the 8800 running but not the 8600 -> your post quoted
then (with 10.5.2 kext?) they got my 8600 supported and i became happy again...

but as i now consider getting a 9600, i wonder too if this would mean no osx for me again?
thats not worth it!

after a bit of research of my own, i got dissapointed as there seems no
updated kext in the near future:

and 10.5.3 update brings G94 support
http://netkas.org/?p=60

i found an alternative: ati/amd HD 3870 almost same price and performance (under windows)
and it is supported by osx ;)

so maybe i should get these? ;)
