how do you apply these..

Firewalk

mrburns05
03-31-2008, 06:30 AM
to apply, replace system.kext in /System/Library/Extensions

repair permissions:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext

replace mach_kernel with new one in / (rename to mach_kernel if its not already)- you may need onyx to show hidden files.
mach kernal goes in /

repair permissions

sudo chown -R root:wheel /mach_kernel
sudo chmod -R 755 /mach_kernel

reboot with -v -f

hi there mrburns05, thanks for the help. do you know if this is likley to brake my system?.

Firewalk

mrburns05
03-31-2008, 06:39 AM
its possible, backup your mach_kernel and System.kext before hand, if it brakes replace em again

in windows you can use macdrive

in another tiger or leo - easy as 123 - if you have another install to use

This is an amazing update for us. I've been longing for this since the last Apple Update came out. Now there shouldn't be any problems with Time Machine. - Cheers

@WinLinMac01, I believe the Pcwiz kernel installer is only for the kernel (mach_kernel) itself.

To apply the needed System.kext as well, follow this & backup your files before you start:

mrburns05:to apply, replace system.kext in /System/Library/Extensions

repair permissions:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext
sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/System.kext

replace mach_kernel with new one in / (rename to mach_kernel if its not already)- you may need onyx to show hidden files.
mach kernal goes in /

repair permissions

sudo chown -R root:wheel /mach_kernel
sudo chmod -R 755 /mach_kernel

reboot with -v -f

i would avoid it

I wouldn't, the only reason we had to avoid the Time Machine update was because of the system.kext and 9.2.2 kernel it installed.

Now we have these it should be safe, just make sure you replace the kernel and system.kext AFTER you install the update – also make sure you run Marvins before you restart, otherwise your system won't boot!

I am having trouble with the update/replace process. When I run the updater it wont install the updates right away. What it does is downloads then tell me to restart, and then installs the updates while it restarts preventing me from replacing anything. How are you guys doing it so that you can update and replace?

CyCLoBoT
03-31-2008, 07:28 PM
I usually download the updates from Apple's site. Then when you install it normally, it will ask you to restart after installation and then you can replace whatever you want before pressing the Restart button.

try repairing permissions on it if you can (from spare installation or install DVD). sometimes, for whatever reason, the terminal manual permissions commands don't get deep inside the file enough, and leave certain contents untouched. really frustrating, actually. hope that helps :\

-v -f shouldnt change that, "-v -f" only tells it to show what normally loads in the background, -f forces extension loading and kernel caching i believe, i may be wrong.
So your still in normal mode once booted, just without the Apple Loading screen at boot.

I have all updates - including time machine update applied, i just dont use time machine though.

I am very curious that some people are reporting that the kernel 9.2.2 and system.kext patch for AMD works. I have updated my perfectly working system and it broke it(wont boot, white apple screen with spinning gear). Well I yanked it out and I'm back to normal.

Lessons learned: If it aint broke, dont fix it ! LOL

Oh, btw...it has to be blessed Zephyroth or eddie11c before I use anything again !

here how I install it!
unzip the download file, then rename mach_922 to mach_kernel and use pcwiz's kernel to install it
use kext helper b7 to install System.kext (I did run kext permission for mach_kernel if need it)
reboot
and now I'm running 9.2.2 with out problem! this update fix my issue with reboot and shutdown.

BUT I see only 1 Core with full core speed of 2.6Ghz. I have Dual-core 2.6 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ processor. I don't see any problem sofar, and I don't know if my Leo read 1 core it will make any different!

:(

I messed up my system yesterday cause of kernel update. Now in the new install I figured I'll do this the proper way.

- Update system.kext with kext helper
- Update Kernel with kernel helper (or whatever its called)
- To make sure repair permissions for system.kext
- To make very sure set permission to kernel.

And now my system boots to Firewire message and then it halts without error and the harddrive shuts down.
I tried booting with -v -f to no use. WTF is up with that. If I have to do another reinstall I will go insane. This is windows all over, even getting worse, a lot worse.

Any help is very very very appreciated. Goddamnit

It seem that a lot of people are having problems with the new mach_kernel 9.2.2 and system.kext,
on the other hand some said that they were able to get it working. I myself have tried it and it
did not work for me. What is so confusing here are the bits-and-peices of information from the
people who claim to having it working. Can someone who has it working write in clear steps what
they did and tell the rest of us what system hardware they are using because I think this is related
to system hardware configuration rather than the new kernel upgrade itself.

Cheers !!

My guess is that everyone who is having issues has the Xcode Developer Tools installed. If so follow these instructions:

http://mac.kbot.de/kernel-panic-after-installing-xcode-on-osx86/#more-91

After removing the CHUD kexts it booted fine for me. I have no idea why it worked with the 9.2.0 kernel and not 9.2.2 though...

Hope this helps others :)

Here's a small update:
I removed the Chud kexts and now have the 9.2.2 Kernel working, however, it won't work if I use the System.kext (9.2.2) that came with it. Initially I was getting an AppleNForceATA.kext error on boot, so I rebooted into single user mode and put back the 9.2.0 System.kext and now have a bootable system. So far so good...

I had kernel panics before but now I'm good.

Running 9.2.2 here but haven't updated the system.kext yet so this might be the cause of panic and crashes.
About this mac works here, profiler shows only 1 core but activity monitor shows 2 cores running so all good.

Eddie, I'm using your Leo4all v2 release (which is great btw) so I don't know why it's not working for you, try without the system.kext.

-f means force to load kext, so it loads the new system. kext i guess.
Shure you deleted extentions.kext to remove the cache?
Maybe it will work afterwards without -f

With my System no way to run the new kernel.

kernel + system.kext -> panic
kernel + old system.kext -> panic
old kernel + system.kext -> panic
(i have 2 systems, exchanging files and repair permissions + marvin from leo2 on leo1, so no handling mistake)
ill stay with the old one then...

Not one problem here. Works perfectly

I did install the kernel by hand -->

1) Using Terminal, rename the “mach_kernel” (9.2.0) in root (/) directory to “mach_kernel_old”.

sudo -s
cp /mach_kernel /mach_kernel_old
2) Move the “mach_kernel” (9.2.2) from your desktop to root (/) directory.

cp desktop/mach_kernel /mach_kernel
3) Repair permissions.

cd /
chown -R root:wheel mach_kernel
chmod -R 755 mach_kernel
4) Reboot.

system.kext was installed via kext helper

reboot and everything worked

______________________
my system worked with 9.2.2 kernel and system.kext better than now with all updates installed
sure i ran marvin's utility and replaced decrypts and all patches worked.

to be honest my system was perfect with and without new kernel. just the timemachine update messed it up
now i have short mouse movement bugs again sometimes, but they go away after a minute or so...
also buggy transmission, firefox and ssx
hmm i wish i did make a backup partition before installing the updates, damn it!

despite im already saving money for an intel system i appreciate every help and hint i get for these annoying things

my relevant specs are:

msi k8n neo 4 platinum - socket 939 nforce 4 ultra - amd x2 4600 @ 2,8 GHz - 2GB CellShock DDR1 RAM @ 500 MHz
Zeph's OSX 10.5.2 rev.2 9C7010 Kernel 9.2.2 on IDE HDD

Is the new system.kext nesessary to run the new kernel properly?

I ask this because I have only updated the kernel and Leo seems to run stable so far.

Thx

Hi Snow,
found this in another forum, so seems to work without System.kext as well but there are some sidekicks probably:

>The system.kext can be added later, it is just for the bom.archiever and
>the diskimagemounter to work. Run diskutility after replacing it in System/
>Library/Extensions.

So why is it working for you? Single Prozessor? Did you apply time machinge update before? SMBIOS version?
It seems no one could find out the issue why it sometimes works and sometimes it won't.

- Im using Eddies Leo4all v2 which has the updated Time Machine integrated
- I'm also using the default SMBIOS from Leo4all v2
- Using A64 X2 4200+ here
- Diskimagemounter works, so does everything else it seems

Maybe I have done something wrong before with the system.kext and it works when I try it again but I'm too scared. I'm not the scared type but when it comes to another friggin reinstall I'm VERY CAUTIOUS.

Anyway, hope this info helps some peeps. I really suggest you try the kernel first as described by Roisoft a few posts back. I forgot all about this.

Interesting, because it worked on your release too (on my system). I updated the kernels on both your version and Zephyroth's and works like a charm.

eddie11c:This kernel does not work on my AMD, when it boots it says 64bit enabled then halts soon after it gets the boot device.

Single Prozessor?
Did you apply Time Machinge Update along/before that update?
SMBIOS version?
Only kernel or System.kext also?

@peppi, never installed the Time Machine update with Zephyroth's release after following up with what other's have said. My SMBIOS is the latest from March 28. I replaced both kernel and System.kext as well. Below are my specs (and yes, it is a uniprocessor)-

Operating System: Windows Vista Ultimate (x64-bit) Retail, & Mac OSX Leopard 10.5.2 Zephyroth Rev.2 (Evaluation purposes only)
Central Processing Unit - AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ Venice
Mobo - Gigabyte Technology K8NXP-SLI---Nforce 4 SLI Chipset
RAM - 3GB DDR 400, 2xCorsair XMS (2GB), 2xCrucial Ballistix (1024MB)
HD - 1 SATA2, 320GB, Western Digital, 16MB Cache
ODD - 1 NU IDE DVD-RW, 16x
Video Card - Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128MB PCI Express (2) / SLI-mode
Audio: AC'97
LAN: Realtek Ethernet Card
Keyboard/Mouse: Logitech LX700 Cordless Desktop

I am very sure now that it was ToH who released this kernel. I was keeping my face locked on my screen, and before Leopard booted, I selected verbose mode, and noticed for a fraction-of-a-second three letters, ToH. Right there and then, I knew for a fact that it was ToH who released this kernel. Any objections? Feel free to comment. =)

But after removing extensions.mkext from System/Library

Hi WinLinMac01,
thats even stranger then, coz my config is quite similar, execpt the sata part. I am running Leo on IDE.
Same SMBIOS, no TimeMachine Update.

Are those who can not use the kernel running on IDE too?
Maybe that is an issue, as even -v doesn't show up with some errormessages, the System just stops loading,
so maybe its something about the HD Driver....

How did you get SATA to work? I placed AppleNForceATA.kext v1.0.3 inside the plugins folder of IOATAFamily.kext,
maybe you use a different driver on that?

I used the SATA driver that was included in the NVIDIA chipset (2/3/4/5) that was in the DVD before I begun the installation. Can it be that I have only one hard drive in my system, SATA? I still doubt that part.

Well if the system is on while you are using it or if it is inactive at nights, could be something wrong with your time configuration settings, or it can be something else that I am probably not aware off.

Mine has always suffered from random restarts, particularly when leaving the machine running over night. Looking through my crash logs reveals kernel trap errors specific to Safari, these result in a panic therefore forcing the system to restart itself. However, I am probably my own worse enemy as I use a lot of input managers that require SIMBL, these can cause stability issues as they are essentially hacks. If I use Firefox as my main browser stability returns.

I've been having these problems since day one on my system right back to 10.5.1, so the kernel is not the issue. I suspect its a hardware vs. kext issue thats causing my problem. Fortunately its doesn't happen much when I'm on the machine or in the middle of something. Still a tad annoying though and I will investigate it further when I have a little more time.

Those kernels may or may not work for everyone, the reason being these were all binpatched. Apple has not released the source code yet for the new kernel or Netkas would compile a true universal version. I suggest waiting for this, as stability can be an issue with binpatched kernels. Just my 2 cents...

I'm having the same "self reboot" issue here too. But It's been happening on all the kernel's I've tried (9.0.0,9.1.0,9.2.0,9.2.2). Initially it was whenever I was away from the system, but recently and more recurring it's happening in the middle of whatever I'm doing. From Safari to msn, Logic to Activity monitor (and of course on it's own) Just seems to be really unstable. Bit frustrating as EVERYthing else for me is peachy!

Eddie, or anyone else, do you know which kernel is the most stable? I'm having very frustrating issues getting my system to remain stable with some software, in particular EyeTV which keeps crashing. I'm wondering if I'm using the wrong kernel and maybe there is a better one? I'm using the AMD SSE2 kernel which comes with Eddie's Leo4All V2 disc.

I installed kernel and had major probs. Didn't back up since it was a newer install and didn't really mind.

I deleted mach_kernel, deleted System.kext, and reinstalled from Leo4All v2. My system STILL won't boot. Is there anything else I can try? or should I just format and reinstall?

It hangs right after bootloader. I can run -f to reload extensions, but then it just reboots w/o an error. is it normal to say "Loading HFS File [mach_kernel]" twice in a row? same with Extensions.mkext

Thank you

Well With the kext helper and the pcwiz the update couldn't be done, even if everything seams to work correct. I have tried once again updating manual but I have kernel panic on the restart.

Any ideas?

the kernel doesnt work for everyone- maybe your one of the unlucky ones, best thing to do at this point= forget about it and enjoy your leopard install

Do this (my method):

Download the new kernel and system.kext

Use kext-installer first to install the new system kext.
Then, copy the mach_922 to your desktop and rename that to mach_kernel
Install kernel-installer by PCWiz and rename your existing kernel as mach_kernel.backup when you receive the prompt
Then when the installer asks for the directory where your new kernel is located, point the directory to your desktop where mach_kernel is
Finally, the installer will ask you where you would like to place the new kernel, point the file to the root when asked and
the installation should be successful.

Worked splendily for me. =)

i suggest using the modbin kernel form kayways installer, that did the job for me, with the normal 9.2.2 kernel i get kernel panic

@Doix, but aren't both of those kernels the same thing?

I can't seem to get past Firewire Full Secure Mode when I use modbinkernel, so far sleepkernel works the best, though I can't seem to reboot, it gets where the screen turns off and then it just hangs, so I have to hit the reset button every time.

I did this but didn't worked, still having kernel panics on the restart. I should maybe forget the new kernel and stay as it is.

Try sleep kernel or modkernel included in Kalways or Leo4all's release.

How I will find it, since I have problem with the sleep function I wanted to change the sleep kernel. I have Leo4allv3 is it in there?

I managed to fix the sleep function by putting ACPI to "S0" mode in BIOS.
