View Full Version : [Success] How to install Mac OS X Leopard on Spider platform (AMD Phenom)

1. Install Zeph's OS X 10.5.1 (there is no instant reboot problem with this install DVD on Phenom)

1.1. If you have "waiting for root device" message on boot, you need to add chipsets ext to install DVD, this is can been done easy with Transmac under Windows. Just download chipsets kext, copy it to Extensions folder on ISO (using Transmac) and burn new install DVD. Boot DVD with "-f -v" flags.

1.2 If you have "blinking cursor" problem on boot of installed OS X, here is the solution http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues#toc3

2. Update to 10.5.2 using "10.5.2 Update for AMD only, eddie11c".

3. Install Apple Graphics Update

4. Install drivers (video, audio) (kext helper is a good tool, if something goes wrong you can delete trouble kext from Windows using Transmac or just boot with -s flag, do as sayed on screen and with help of unix commands (rm (remove), cp (copy), ls(list current dir), cd (change directory)) fix problem from shell)

5. Update kernel to latest (using Kalyway all kernels package)

6. Fix rosetta (if games and some apps are crashing on start) (Solution taken from here http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=91260&st=0#)

6.1. Download this file: http://rapidshare.com/files/96033590/oah.zip.html

6.2. As root, move /usr/libexec/oah directory somewhere safe for backup
sudo -s
cd /usr/libexec
cp -R oah oah.bak

6.3. Copy the downloaded file into /usr/libexec/
rm -rf /usr/libexec/oah
cp -R ~/Downloads/oah

I guess you have some harddrive / harddrives setup / bios problems.
Update bios.
Disable RAID.
Disconnect all drives.
Connect only one HDD (master) and one CDROM (slave).
Install (MBR partition scheme, 2 partitions (install to first, name it for example "Leopard", format HFS+ Journ.).
Activate first partition after install. ("blinking cursor" solution for MBR)
Boot to installed OS X.

I have one of my systems running perfectly with Kalyway 10.5.2 using drivers on disk, onboard sound(output only), video(QE/CI), network all works. All I had to do is change my SATA setting in the bios to AHCI. Im not a windows user, but changing to AHCI could cause windows not to boot if you have it installed. To fix it all you have to do is enable the Msahci driver in the registry and you should be good to go.

Support for that chipset is already included with the latest releases, just choose the AppleOnboardPCATA driver when you install. I have attached the file you are looking for if the one on the disk does not work.

All other distribution have instant reboot issue on Phenom as far as i know. Some EFi compability problem. Have tested Zephs 10.5.2, Leo4All v1, v2. Just one distro doesnt not have this issue and it is Zephs 10.5.1.

So if can boot from your install DVD (others than Zephs 10.5.1) you are lucky one and you dont need steps i discribe in first post. Just pick fresh one and install.

Javier

In the K9A2 Platinum (I have that motherboard also) how do you set the Raid to AHCI in the Bios? I cant find that option. Are you able to boot into leopard from your SATA hard drive? I'm asking because I'm not sure if Zeph 10.5.1 or Zeph 10.5.2 supports the 790FX chipset (I'm assuming both distributions already support SB600).

My setup is a 500GB drive, with Leopard only (no windows dual boot)

When I get the "Installation Complete" and reboot, I'm getting the "still waiting for root device" error.

thanks

John

Ok, you need Raid disable and thats it, and the sata change raid for AHCI, in the bios, mmm when you go to the bios is the 3er option, im not at home, I cant help you, but I know to set up the AHCI is the 3er option(you start left, up to down), the next menu is the last or one before, and thats it,
Take care. I hope I can help you.

In terminal:

sudo cp /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist.backup

sudo nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

Remove '-v' flag and you will get your apple on boot. :)

P.S. There is a '-legacy flag' turned on, you can try removing it. I have removed it and didnt get any problem. Also you can edit the timer counter to lower value to speed up start up.

Don't worry, it is only beta. The picture you see may be wrong, but the scripts for your processor are most likely correct. Remember for your second question, your PC is not a Mac, so the readings may be wrong. Assume that the O/S is detecting 800 MHz.

why does 10.5.1 work and 10.5.2 doesnt?
i have a phenom and i download know 10.5.1. i hope that 10.5.1 will work.

the 10.5.2 freezes right when it should boot.

another question .if 10.5.1 boot correctly and it will let me install it....why the hack i can istall the 10.5.2 update?

i thought 10.5.2 dont work?...

that let me come to the conlusion that the 10.5.2 will work but not proparly.....becouse it will use only 1 cpu instead of 4!?

am i right?

please correct me if i am wrong!!!

its either the kernel thats on them or the the kexts that are included I know when i tried to install the modbin 9.2.2. kernel i got the reset problem. It uses all 4 cores and your lucky if it goes over 3% usage. There is no problem with 10.5.2 its just the iso builds that have the problem with phenom. A 10.5.1 install thats updated works fine.

did you ever answer whether or not you have a ide/sata-to-usb adapter? This was always the problem for me (even though I have a different chipset and processor) until I got an adapter so I could install to the (now external) HDD and then fix the kexts in OSX to make it so I didn't need the adapter.

heres a quick comparison with the native drivers (already on 10.5.1 DVD) on my motherboard (SB600 Chipset) it took well over an hour to install, thats to an ide hardrive. On the same drive on usb it took about 30 mins. This then allowed me to use kext helper to install the sata/pata drivers and try it in my machine. It was spot on I could then patch the iso from with in osx using disk utility to include the sata/pata drivers. Then boot dvd with -f -v and do an install in no time at all about 20 mins if that but with the sata drive in the machine. The one golden rule i found about OSX is that if you ever have a problem booting 9 times out of 10 if you canb connect that drive with a usb adapter you will be able to boot it and make changes whilst inside OSX. Heres a link to what i use http://www.sharkoon.de/html/produkte/externe_gehaeuse/drive_link/index_en.html will handle sata drives and 3.5" ide and 2.5" ide drives worth every penny (I use it for alot of computer work). It has saved me alot of head ache this time and I wish the first install I did on an NForce4 board I thought to use it then would have saved a lot of messing. I think the golden rule is USB on make if pretty buullet proof but dont quote me.

I have just looked at the manual for you motherboard the big difference is your is SB700 chipset mine is SB600 I dont believe there is a working driver for it but you should still be able to go the USB route and trust me you will be suprised how quick it will run of USB. Looks like you will have to keep your eyes peeled for a driver but you can still build a working install ready for when you can mount the drive internally.

venomq: i dont know how to alter the install dvd to get sata to work

You need to add chipsets ext to Zephs 10.5.1 install DVD, this is can been done easy with Transmac under Windows. Just download chipsets kext, copy it to Extensions folder on ISO (using Transmac) and burn new install DVD. Boot DVD with "-f -v" flags.

For ms-7501 (chipset AMD 780 / SB700) you need to search for SB700 kext... or try to install to IDE drive

Good luck!

Turn needed options in BIOS to use USB-HDD. (I guess legacy usb must be on, you dont need to turn off anything in bios to boot up osx, just use defaults)
Use Zephs 10.5.1 install DVD and you will get to osx instalation desktop.

Hello,
I'm doing everything as I should, but when I get to

"5. Update kernel to latest (using Kalyway all kernels package)"

I'm not sure which one to install. The sleep one boots, but my USBs started acting weird. I tried to fix them somehow and I screwed everything - even if I replace the kernel and system.kext with the backup I made them, I'm still unable to boot. Even in safe mode. So now I'm going to format the disk again and install everything again. So my question is which kernel are you guys using and do you have any problems with the USBs?

I have the same mobo and cpu as Shadow3k and this thread helped me enormously. Just wanna make everything work perfectly.

@Seawane
if you use the chameleon bootloader you can then use the latest 9.3.0 modbin efi kernel which youll find on leo4all forums

Lawless, I have the very same MB model as you do! I can't boot OS X Install with the regular Zephyroth 10.5.2 disk ("Still waiting for root device"-error), but when I manually edited the install disk with the SB600 kexts, the dvd managed to boot all the way into the installer! Only problem now is, that I can't see my Samsung SATA-II disk at all, even with the SB600 kexts.. All I see in Disk Utility is my two cd/dvd-drives. Also, when I try to mount my HDD manually in the Installer Command Prompt it says that I can't do that because it doesn't recognise the filesystem. :S Is there any specific command I need to execute for the install to see my HDD? Do you have any solution to the problem?

See my config below:

CPU: AMD Athlon 64 x2 4800+ @ 2.5GHz
MB: MSI K9A2 CF-F
RAM: 4Gb Corsair (DDR2 667) @ 800MHz
North Bridge: ATi/AMD 780
South Bridge: ATi SB600
DVD Drive: LiteOn DVDRW SHM-165P6S (IDE)
HDD: Samsung Spinpoint T166 320GB (SATA-II)

I used the 10.5.1 disk on my install but have now managed to run 10.5.2 and that has no issues with my drives when it boots admitted I have changed the dvd but nothing to do with the SATA chipset. As a small note try booting with the options -v -f this is always worth a try if you are having trouble suprising how many pickels this has got me out of also try just running with 2GB of memory at least for the install. Also if you can pick up a usb to SATA/IDE adapter this can be a god send. This will let you make the install to the disk you want then let you install the sb600 kext with kext helper then boot drive on a SATA lead but use -v -f switches. These adapters arent expensive and help you get out of all tricky situations. When I added the sb600.kext to 10.5.1 dvd it wasnt the best way but heres how I did it. I just copied SB600.kext to system/library/extensions then when I booted dvd I just used the -v -f switches this will only give you sata support for that session which means it wont be installed when you have finished. So untill an iso appears that will let you boot and have sata support from the word go your only option is a usb to sata adapter. It will let you do a normal install then install the needed SB600 kext then move drive to a SATA connector.

Hope this helps

Well, but if the SB600 kext doesn't have SATA-II support? Will it work inside OSX anyway?

Anyhow, thanks for your reply m8!

sb600.kext gives sata support. but if you only add it to the dvd by just putting it in extensions folder and forcing it to load by the -f switch at darwin screen. This does not mean it will be installed on your hardrive. You will need an installer to do this which is either included in the dvd as zephyroth 10.5.2 rev2 does or you install via usb then install the sb600 kext and then move the drive.

Hope this clears things up

Ok, but after trying -f method I still can't see my HDD in Disk Utility.. Will probably have to install via USB HD/USB->SATA adapter.

Thanks for your help m8! It's been really helpfull!

Lawless:

Well, that's the DVD I'm currently using; the 10.5.2 Rev.2. Yeah, I've also figured out that something is a little weird... But I managed to solve my problem: I reconnected my old IDE Seagate 120GB HDD and installed OS X on it, speeds when installing are incredible! :-) Almost the speed you would get when installing on a real mac ^^ Everything now installs right and so, but now I have a new problem: After install, on initial boot, after the apple logo has gone away and the "OS config manager" is supposed to come up (where you put in username etc.) my screen gets all messed up! I see broad stripes, in colors shifting from black, red, white and blue. When I move my mouse I sometimes see a little white stripe moving on the screen.. Is this a well known problem? I've tried both of the two drivers for my card in the install with no success, I've also tried using none of them, and both together, but no luck. Perhaps I should try using only 2GB of RAM instead of 4GB?

My GFX card is a Powercolor HD3870 btw.

For your information Lawless, without your help I most surely would still have been stuck with my SATA-2 drive! Most appreciated! :-)

Yes, I also use it. It's something different to the mostly abstract Apple-style wallpapers.

@Simba did you manage to do an install without the Graphics drivers and boot up to a desktop. If not then try this then try the latest drivers for HD3870. But if you put 10.5.3 update on theres a way you need to install them or you will get blank menus. Look up white menu fix 10.5.3 that will give the details

or try boot with the -x switch at the darwin boot screen this should run in safe mode and not lauch graphics card driver. Should let you re-install it.

I am running Zephy 10.5.1 on a Asus m3a32-mvp deluxe. My Phenom is the 9750 (2.4 GHz), 4 GB DDR2 +1066 (Corsair Dominator), and 2 SATA-HDD both Samsung 750GB. My GK is a HIS HD3870 (512 GDDR4).

Using Kext Helper is very easy to install the SB600 kext, it does work, then after a reboot it works instead of genericPCATA and SATA.

I have issues trying to update zephy. How? From where can I get the update packages? The other important point is, how can I install the HD3870?? Are there any kexts out there for the network card? In the user's manual for the mobo it just says "Marvell PCIe Gigabit LAN". And what about the AMD 790FX?? Do you know of any working kext for it??

Thanks a lot!!!

for your graphics card there is an irc channel with them in you will find that on insanely mac just search for it. The ASU from sephy which you will find in this forum is the safest way to do the updates. But if you go to the leo4all forum which you will find on the homepage for infinitemac. There is lots of info in there on the best way to use the ASU by Zephy.

Hi. I've managed to finally get into the installer using Zeph's 10.5.1 install disc, but when I go to format the partition for OSx86, it just lists my Vista partition as 128GB and doesn't show anything after the initial 128GB. I was planning on installing Leopard on a 50GB partition at the end of the drive. If I must install OSx86 on the main drive, then I'll do some partition re-organizing on the drive, but I'd prefer to leave it as it is. If this is a problem with BIOS or a problem with Leopard I'd love to know. I'm pretty sure that it shouldn't be a problem the LBA, seeing as this is a MUCH newer mobo and should work with drives larger than 128, but you never know, MSI might just like to mess around with people since Windows has a software solution available.

System Specs:
cpu: AMD Phenom 9850 BE
mobo: MSI K9A2 Platinum 790FX
ram: Corsair Dominator 2x2gb ddr2 pc2-8500
gfx: 2x ATI Radeon HD 4850 (Crossfired)
HDDs:
3x Seagate 250GB SATAI / 1x Western Digital 250GB SATAII RAID 0
1x Seagate 250GB PATA
Optical:
Sony DVD RW DRU-530A

@ikari7789

try the latest phenom image see if that detects it differently

What is the latest phenom image?

How would that solve a HD problem?

Oops, forgot to mention that the 128 GB is part of the 250 GB PATA and that I have a 50GB partition at the end of the PATA drive (the rest is for Vista). My RAID is for my Vista storage so that I can go around and mess with things like this and not have to worry about losing much data. :)

@ikari different drivers to 10.5.1

07-24-2008, 11:30 PM
Where can I get them? I haven't ever installed OSx86 on an AMD machine, only used my cruddy Intel box that I no longer use anymore. It had perfect compatibility though and I never had any trouble installing on it so I never learned about sources and places to find drivers. Sorry to be such a bother. Thank you already for your help.

Hello shadow3k
My computer is very similar to yours,

AM2+ MSI K9A2 CF (790X+sb600)
AMD Phenom 9950 2.6 BE
ATI Gigabyte HD4870 512MB
SEGATE 500GB SATA II

I've started the install and it's recognize my SATA Drives!
I wish you know which settings you changed in the BIOS if any?

and how did you make your card to work? how can make my 4870 to work in LawlessPPC? I've got the 10.5.4 version...

Thanks for your help!
