while trying to figure out why the ctrl+winkey+alt+8 trick doesn't work i stumbled upon a crazy key combination Ctrl+alt+winkey+7, to use it click on the apple logo (just for example) and hold the key combo, your menus will go crazy )

btw, my favorite (unix) way to start applications is to open spotlight (mapped it to win+space) and type first letters of the application name. That's not exactly same as running apps in e.g. Linux/KDE, but you get more features like built-in calculator
