I eventually managed to update to 10.5.4 after a couple of failed attempts which botched my system twice. Both times I had to restore from my time machine backup because my hack was left unbootable.
The problem turned out to be was that I had the Kalyway 9.3.0 kernel installer in my downloads folder which it tried to install at the same time. It seems that it somehow interfered with the update - when watching the feedback when installing it didn't even run a cpuid check.
