Look up SwitchResX, it allows you to customize which options are available. I'm presently trying to reconfigure what OSX considers is "default" for my Hanns-G 19"w (JW199D), certain colors, particularly this website's background color cause flickering. I've narrowed it down to the timing it's being instructed to perform at (or the Vertical/Horizontal Sync, blah blah... all over my head) and this utility allows you to get down an dirty and force your mac to allow you to choose even the most specific details.
