Okay first off if you do not use KextHelper you need to manual set the permissions on the kext, simply running Disk Utility will not work....Why exactly are you not using KextHelper? Itis certainly the easiest way of doing things.
Second which boot loader are you using? Have you put the GraphicsEnabler statement in your Boot.plist?
