I have an Aspire 5735 and I added an Atheros wifi card. I did a fresh install of OS X 10.6 using this guide

After the initial install the guide says to remove dsmos.kext and replace it with fakesmc.kext

When I did that I loose my wifi. So I decided to delete fakesmc and keep dsmos. The down side is that I cannot upgrade past 10.6.0 but wifi is more important than upgrading to 10.6.4
