Mets,
I have a HP DV7 laptop (i7-720qm & gt230m) and try to install Snow Leopard on external hard drive. I tried iBoot+MultiBeast (this works on internal HD), EmpireEFI and others but failed. Until I find Mammoth DVx Boot CD - v1.10, I have booted SL from a USB harddrive successfully. I think the bootloader is the cause of failure; you may try different bootloaders for your laptop.
