On my ASUS M2A-VM SB600 driver give me UDMA mode for my IDE hard drive. Without it hard drive performance was incredibly slow.
So if you need UDMA - install driver.

Sorry for late answer - was working too much.
The kext was from "http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php?showtopic=66399&hl=sb600" topic.
It enables UDMA for IDE drives and automounts SATA NTFS volumes in readonly mode on boot.

Hope this helps.
