You dont really need an external drive to install, you just need a dedicated partition for OS X, so you could always repartition your main drive, assuming its a single partition and you want to keep your current OS, you would split it into 2 partitions, one i.e. for Vista and the other for OS X. That can be done erasing everything in the hard drive or with some live partition tools like Parted Magic or similar.
