It might be a good idea to update the BIOS,

Just use Windows if you can, to make the thumb drive, and
then download and rename the bios, put it on your thumb drive
and let the BIOS install the new BIOS, just make sure your battery
is charged and your power adapter is plugged into the wall

As far as making the BIOS update thumb drive under OS X, I dont know,
OS X seams to only use FAT32, I just tried with a 2GB thumb drive and
Disk Utility, and its FAT32.
I have not yet found any modified wireless KEXT for the 1000he
