I know your problem.
I had the same trouble on my old configuration (Sempron 3000+ 1600Mhz / ASRock AM2NF6G-VSTA - nForce 405) - I never found out the reason for this, though I found people having the same difficulties on completely different setups... but as you got the same maybe it's CPU related?
Anyway I had found a solution.  Get "iAtkos v4a 10.5.4 AMD Only", but exactly this release, for the reason that it uses the ToH Kernel and the unmodified Darwin Bootloader (without EFI Emulation) to boot the DVD and it has the option to use those on your installation.
For me this worked and I hope it will do for you, too. But keep in mind that a setup with modified SMBIOS, etc Kernel Extensions & the requierement of manual opcode patching can be a little painfull...
