You have several options to retrieve your documents.

If your problem is hardware related, remove your hard drive and plug into a second machine with OSX. You can do this directly or via a USB to EIDE/SATA adapter.

If you problem is software related, you should be able to boot your original installation disk. From the installation menu, you can access terminal and transfer your documents to a USB drive or external hard drive. You should be able to search this forum and/or your preferred search engine for command line instructions. If needed, I can go into detail on the process for retrieving your documents.
