Oh, I'm not a Marvin's expert, but I've always been under the impression that whenever you installed new software, you needed to use Marvin's to check for CPU_ID's (and on the rare occassion, encrypted binaries). That seemed to make sense to me - expecially when the software is likely built to run on an Intel processor.
You don't need 2 installs to run it. You just need to copy it to your Applications folder. It's fairly simple, even if it's a bit "terse"... Most people probably use the 2nd option, which really just LOOKS for CPU_ID's that may need to be changed. When it's complete, it builds a log and patch file you can then use to make the CPU_ID changes of you wish. I use the second option once in a while. After I've installed 10.5.1 and any software I want, and done all the updates I want, I usually run Marvin's using Option 4 - which just "does it" - searches and patches automatically. (don't know that I should have that much trust - but, since I know very little, IT probably knows a lot better than me what needs to be done...)
Turns out I have 8.0.3 and it runs fine on mine. My specs: 6100/430 socket 939 MB, Athlon64 X2 4200+, 8600GTS (QE/CI), 2GB DDR, lots of different drives, blah, blah... (see my sig. @ insanelymac)
Running both 10.5.8 and 10.6.4 on my stinking AMD/ATi machine...
