You can install all the app's updates safely ( iTunes, FrontRow, etc. ). The only things You have to be careful about are the system updates. They mostly contain new kernel versions and often restores original GFX kexts so before installing them - make a backup of kernel, gfx kexts and system kext, and boot using them after the updates. There are few guides how to do this here @forum.
