Adding the following lines to:

/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist

<key>Graphics Mode</key>
<string>1600x1200x32</string>

Should give you a higher resolution and not just the 1024x768 res. Try with a widescreen res..

Works for me.
