I don't know why exactly is done wrong here, but it doesn't look like you succefully replaced the file. 
Mabe if you try to delte mach_kernel before moving the vanilla kernel file to mach_kernel?
Maybe I've also been wrong about the file permissions, my mach_kernel's owner is root, but the Group is admin and not wheel as I wrote above, or maybe you can boot up using vanilla_kernel, if you enter /vanilla_kernel with the / in front of it?
