First always boot with -v when doing tests, to see the boot log, a grey apple will tell you nothing about whats going wrong...
It looks like your board has AMD SB700 storage controller, which is badly supported by OS X, if you have AHCI mode available in the BIOS the SATA ports should work, if you dont have it or you are using an IDE disk you may need to find a distro that has support for your controllers device id in some hacked kext or try to do a retail install and include the kext yourself.
