Is Upgrade possible?

Hi,
I would like to know if I can upgrade my Tiger 10.4.11 install with the Leopard upgrade dvd? I am not sure if this is possible, but I figured it may save me allot of headaches in the long run if I can. The disk is readily available ( Mac OS X Leopard CPU Drop-in DVD, version 10.5, 2Z691-6040-A ) and I sure would like to get any feedback I can before I take the plunge.

I recommend the User folder trick.

Basically, what you want to keep is in your home folder right? Well there's an easy way to move over your home folder and retain everything perfectly.

Just install Leopard on a separate disk, or partition, or first back up your home folder. (/Users/yourname)

When you install Leopard create a user name that is different from your normal name. Now copy your Tiger home folder into /Users.

Then in System Preferences, create a new User with the same name as the Tiger home folder. OS X will ask you if it should use the existing folder - say yes and it will repair the permissions for you and you're good to go!

So what you are saying is to just load a fresh copy of Leopard on to a separate hard drive and just copy over my home folder? So, there is no way to simply upgrade the installation I already have? I know this sounds a bit odd, but I thought I could upgrade an existing installation without damaging it, similar to Windows upgrades. Hmmm...I am going to have to research this a bit further.

From what I can glean on Insanelymac, if you install Leopard over your Tiger install - ie. without formatting, it will upgrade it for you!

Well I would back up my stuff if it were crucial before trying this.

BTW I recommend XxX 10.5.6 - my fave distro.

Well I downloaded XxX_x86_10.5.6._final and I can't seem to upgrade from Tiger. The system wants me to reboot before it installs. When I reboot I get a Kernel error about Chameleon, not sure what is going on, but I am going to reburn the image a try again.

:UPDATE: I re-burned the ISO at the lowest speed possible and still getting the Kernel panic at startup. I am clueless as to what the error is. I do believe it has something to do with the kernel (9.5) that my system does not support or cannot handle. I am going to research this further and if I can not resolve the issue I will post a picture of the error message and maybe someone on the forum can help me sort out the problem.
