Numerous Questions

Hey guys I'm new to the forums.

I have a bunch of experience navigating insanelymac and have had a few relatively successful installs. However, insanelymac (bless it's heart, Palin style ) is insane due to the heavy traffic and many hours of unfriendly search queries.

So I was happy to stumble upon this gem via the iATKOS wiki.

I have a number of questions that I was hoping you (collectively) could answer. I have

given these questions research (just so you know I am not being lazy):

1) In the new iATKOS 5i install there is a custimize feature I have never seen called Decrypters Apple Decrypt and dsmos. What are these?

2) What is the SMBIOS? Are there advantages to having different ones. I thought they are for having your RAM speed properly recognized in the system profiler. Is that wrong?

3) What is the difference between Sleep vs. SpeedStep vs. Voodoo vs. ToH vs. fassl Kernels? If I select all of these in an installer does that mean I can load them from the bootloader? Or should I only select 1?

4) what is ACPI in the customize option? Does this help sleep work? if so, is the sleep kernel for when this doesn't work?

5) If I select Intel AHCI Sata, Intel SATA and JMicron for my customization options is that valid? I have an intel controller (which handles AHCI and regular) as well as a JMicron on my motherboard.

6) are there any differences between Titan, Natit and NVinject. I have always used NVInject but if my computer would sleep or the monitor would shut off (programmaticly) it would open to a blank screen.

I hope these questions are worded accurately.

Thanks,
JOe K.

I can help out with a few of these questions... some are not my strong suite so I won't waste your time with my thoughts on them... I'm researching the ones I don't know so I can try to answer in the future.

the new voodoo RC does not have decryption capabilities yet so these kexts enable that feature. Highly encouraged.

select only one of these. The kernel is defined here. Your system specs are what will guide you to picking the correct one. The differences aren't always evident. Some provided better features for the systems as they came out. Always try to have the latest stable kernel for your type of system. For AMD I'd recommend the new voodoo kernel which incorporates the patching usually necessary to run certain apps or even use Apple Software Update to update the system.

ACPI dictates the power management for the devices of the system (other than the CPU... which now has the AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext for this, so make sure to get the IntelCPUPMDisabler.kext or just Disabler.kext to counter this as it will cause kernel panics on non-Intel systems).

This is fine. you can actually select multiple chipset controller fixes and your system will know which to use.

Each of these is a different type of kernel extension injector that manipulates how the system will respond to the devices attached. Yes each is different so different results may occur with each (although some may provide the end result). The best way to know which way is best is to try them out... just make sure you are able to determine what file(s) is/are placed in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder so when you want to change injectors you can easily delete the old one.

Thank you so much for your reply. Most of my questions were answered.

I have a few questions regarding your replies

1) How do I know if a kernel has decryption capabilites?

2) Where or is there a comprehensive guide to the different kind of kernels? Sleep vs. SpeedStep vs. Voodoo vs. ToH vs. fassl. I'm not sure what differentiates these from one another.

I know Vanilla is the original kernel but that is pretty much it. I am guessing that Sleep is vanilla modded to handle sleep (although I haven't been able to get my computer to sleep using it) and speedstep is vanilla modded to enable speedstep.

3) Should I use the ACPI fixes if I have sleep issues? Is it only applicable to laptops? Is it dangerous if this is not set due to incorrect power management?

4) For the graphics kexts can I use a kext installer to try and use these different injectors? Or do I have to do this on installation

Again thank you so much for your reply,
JOe K.

research the individual kernels... You can find a great deal by simply googling these as well as checking out the different forums for OSx86 all over the net.

The older kernels were created in order to help different systems be able to experience OSx86 and were updated/upgraded to try to match the newest vanilla. You'll have different results in performance and management with each. I've already given my plug for the Voodoo kernel (since this is also the latest stable version) and was created from the ground up... not based off another vanilla kernel (even though it gives great results).

I had them set up in my box but its not as big of a deal if you don't have a laptop.

there are many different installers for each of these Graphics injectors so no, you don't need to do it at installation. The default graphics still sets you up with 1024x768 or so even if its not natively supported so you can always edit it later.

I know I didn't answer the kernel questions in full... those are still a kind of mystery to me as well in terms of major differences. If anyone else cares to pitch in and give their two cents, that would be great.

Thanks so much for your replies that helped immensly.

I will google the kernels and report my findings.

I'm going to try and not touch the computer until after finals otherwise I'm toast

Thanks again,
JOe K.
