(I had problems with kernel panics from mounting disk images. Its an easy add after the fact though.)
Verbose Mode (This adds -v to com.apple.boot.plist so you boot in verbose mode every time. Its a good thing to use untill your finished setting the rig up.)

I know that I may sound like I'm going against the whole reason why you would pick a distro with so many options but I prefer to install bare bones basic and then fix each issue separately. I would pull files from the disk after. This is just me. If your going to add a bunch of options at the time of install be sure to keep a log of what you selected and the results as Ive been in the same situaton and after a few installs I start forgetting what I chose previously...then again I don't have a great short term memory.

I really don't know as far as chipset drivers are concered. That is a tough one.

Immediately after you install when you restart use the boot flags -v -f
